Happy to say it's an SP3 number 176. It sounds fantastic. It's performance through USB with a macmini server is superb. I previously traded down from a wyred 4 sound dac2 to a peach tree dacit to an arcam rdac all through USB and am the rare person that would choose both lower priced dacs over the w4s. However the performance of the sp3 beats all of those (as it should/expected) by a very clear margin. HT Audio through hdmi is also terrific. Above all, user centered design is better than anything I have experienced including most recently nad m15 hd.  A bryston brand loyalist!

Hi al,
During the lengthy time that i have been waiting for the BHA i have been doing more research into quality pro audio electronics and SPL have always been on the cutting edge of that technology and continue to raise the bar on good sound.
I came across this unit on Headrooms website and thought it was a unique piece of equipment and checked out reviews from audiophiles and studios that use this monitor headphone amp and it gets rave reviews plus i can return it in 30 days if not satisfied. I will reorder the BHA if i am not satisfied with the SPL Phonitor.

I am also considering selling my Martin Logan Spires for Genelecs large monitor the 8260A as it is tri-amped with active crossovers. I like that the pro stuff offers more flexability and seems to already answer some of the issues us audiophiles have with our gear.

A reasonable plan.

My presumption was/is that it won't make any difference and purchased it for protection from surges and fluctuating power.  I'm expecting a very electrically active summer weather season this year.  I must say, however, a few hours after plugging everything in, I turned the system on while doing other things and it sounded different.  If I get the time, I will connect things so that I can easily "move" the electronics from filtered to unfiltered and "hear" what happens.  If I do detect a change, I will use my wife as an unsuspecting test subject.

I should add that first priority is to see how much electronics can be connected without tripping the circuit breaker.  The big current draws are 2 7Bs, 6B, 3B, 15" and 18" Velodynes.  The front end stuff is a minor factor, I think.

A pair of Bryston 7B-SST2, one 4B-SST2 Pro, an older 10B crossover customized by Bryston, and a White Instruments 4700-2 equalizer—all to drive a pair of speakers designed for me by George Augspurger which I hope to have built and installed early this summer.

A pre-worldwar I librarians desk. I have been searching for a very long time for my perfect desk. The individual whom I purchased the desk from estimates a creation date in the very late 19th century. He found it during a 1970s visit to Europe and had it shipped over. One of my friends who helped me bring it into the house suggested that I refinish it - not going to happen because I believe that an item that is 100 years old will lose its personality if you try and make it new. I can not wait to start writing on my new desk and I can only imagine the history behind it. A good cleaning will be now in the works.

"he house suggested that I refinish it ..."

Reminds me of the TV shows where people bring things to the appraised.  Someone will bring in a piece of furniture and the appraiser will say that this is a rare 18th century blah...blah that would be worth $800,000 but since you refinished it, the worth is $1000.

I remember watching some of these shows many years ago and I thought that they were very self serving because it seemed as they wanted to inflate prices across the board.

Laundrew, that is one awesome piece of furniture - it must weigh a ton...Any idea what type of wood it's built out of ? I bought some PC's yesterday but I'd rather talk about that desk... :thumb:

Thank you for your kind words. I was told that my desk is made from mahogany and it is indeed, very heavy. The legs do come off and we certainly had a very difficult time bringing it in the house on Saturday. I told my friend who helped me move it in the house that lunch was going to be on me one day this week. Lady Laundrew, after watching us move the desk warned me that lunch better not be at McDonalds  :nono:

I would like to start cleaning it today with some Murphy's Oil soap.

Be well...

Lemon oil is your friend.
I love those old pieces - shopping for furniture nowadays just depresses me...Even if you're willing to take the elastic band off your wallet and go all out, the quality is so weak. Ick.
Enjoy ! :D

Thanks for all the compliments and suggestions  :D

My Mom and Dad were up visiting this weekend and ironically, surprised me with a little gift that perfectly coincided with the arrival of my desk. I have always admired a particular piece in their collection for many years and referred to it as "Newton with his apple." They have owned it for as long as I can remember and purchased it at an estate auction while visiting family in Scotland.

It is another timeless slice of history that I am very privileged to call my own for the rest of my life; if only it could comment on the history and day-to-day life of the individuals who have owned it. My dad was mentioning that Newton rivals the vintage of my desk. Looking around my room I realize that it really requires a make over - time to get bold and go for red paint! Next on the agenda is a carved chair and, please be still my beating heart, a Victorian bookcase hopefully in mahogany.

Another interesting observation with the cluttered computer desk gone and the industrial robot removed from the centre of the room has really improved its sonic characteristics.
