Whetstone/ knife sharpener.

Hey!

I'm planning to buy my first whetstone. But not sure which would be good for me to start with

So far I've been only use honing steel stick of which I will still use but would like to have a whetstone for occasional use. :D

Basically I'm looking for something that would be good all around. I've seen some two sided one with rough side and fine side. But not sure what grit should I get.

So, can anyone here recommend me a good whetstone? A two sided one would be nice. And what grit or girts for two sided one should I get? Oh! Please something not expensive please :icon_lol:  Thanks. :D

Take care,
Buddy :thumb:

What kind of knives are you sharpening?  What is the budget most knifenuts don't really like the double sided whetstones.  You also need to way to flatten the stones, glass with sandpaper or a DMT plate.  You will gouge it and if it is uneven the edge will not be uniform.  This is what most poeple get though, a low and high grit, not a bad deal but of course separate stones are better.

Hey!

Thanks guys for your input. :D

A little over a week ago I went to the Korin store here in downtown NYC and got this...

A two-sided #1000/#4000. It was my first time at the Korin store. Since I have been using their knife I decided to give them a visit. Man! What a store! All those beautiful knives was a eyes candy to look at :o

They do have couple of stone there. This is the cheapest one and the staff there said that it is a good general stone for maintaining knives. So, I bought it. :D

As for my Korin knife here. I was given this knife from the chef that I used work with. It is an 8" made from molybdenum VG steel. I actually took it to the Korin store when I was there but the 2 staffs there that day couldn't tell me anything about it. They said this were made before they start working there. Currently I don't think Korin have this style of knife. I think it likely from the late 80's to early '90s and probably made in Japan. Likely around $80-120. Maybe? :dunno:

Anyway, it is nice to have a stone to keep my knife sharp now. :D

Take care,
Buddy :thumb:
