US had so many damn chances!  :duh: :duh: :duh: :duh:
I dunno what went wrong in that final second in front of the net! They should've won this game!!  It should not have gone till extra time!
I hated that they started so damn slow and were disorganised in the first half, and then played great in the second. Why can't they play in a sustained manner through out?? They got lucky against algeria, but to expect the same every game is  :duh: :duh:

Look at what happened to italy. Through out the tournament, they played only about 20 mins of great soccer, and that too in their last match. That stupid goal they gave away to slovakia made sure that they were knocked out!

This is the world cup knock out stage ... play every minute like your life depended on it! Do not wait and play catch up.

They didn't play well in the 1st or 2nd half. That goal was from a penalty kick by Donovan which he narrowly missed. Ghana was a better team, they handled the ball much better and hardly lost the ball to the U.S. whether they were on the offensive or defensive.

The U.S. needs a lot more time to mature. I am glad in some ways that the last qualifying African country from their continent made it. Ghana needed that. In fact, the U.S. lost to Ghana in the last World Cup as well.

Anand.

Robin - Teams that perpetually need to play catch up are not ready for prime time. They may get there by accident but they haven't got what it takes to carry the day. If the U.S. had scored on their chances the way Ghana did, there wouldn't have been any over time period. They would have won it about 6-1.

Several times during these World Cup games I've heard the announcers refer to composure. Ghana showed that better than we did. The U.S. might just lead all other teams in missed opportunities.

Like I said for a 2nd time,, I wholeheartedly disagree with you. It's all the countries that didn't qualify for the World Cup that aren't ready for primetime cuz I look at just being in the World Cup as being primetime soccer ready. Making it out of the 1st round only cements my feelings that Team USA belonged there.

So lets just say we look at things a bit differently when you use the terminology "primetime", OK?

Cheers,
Robin

Anand, I believe the US was the better team, at least I thought they created many more opportunities/chances than did Ghana, but then again, so did Korea.  Unfortunately, the US couldn't finish as well, like the Koreans!  It was a good match...  I always say, every team in the tournament is going to feel like the US team today when they lose, EXCEPT FOR ONE!

Shotgun approach at winning is a no no.  If it is so hard to get to the opposite goal post, rather use a sharpshooter technique rather than act as if you have a blunderbuss.  That is the damning thing about soccer, scoring is not necessarily easy as walking, grabbing the ball and dunking.

Moreover, the idea of keeping the pace throughout the game, it is an important proposition.  When your team goes all out for 90 minutes, it is a matter of time to have the opposition, which is fresher due to their lack of effort, to outplay you.

Keeping this in mind, a team that spends technique and herculean effort to get to a scoring position and uses sharp executions wins...and the team that does all that effort to get to the opposite goal post and uses the blunderbuss, it is wasting VITAL energy.

Koreans dominated for final 10 minutes of the 1st half and 20 of the second half...then the Uruguayans came back.

I am betting the house for the next match on the Ghanians.  They are faster and more consistently accurate than the Uruguayans.

Sorry about the USA team.   Brazil team surely is not good too, as proved the last game(with Portugal).

Hm...don't know about that...that was #1 vs #3 in world ranking, so, that's why they didn't look that dominant!

Outplaying their opponent and coming up short is pretty tough, but not as bad as getting beat by the ref's. I think they seriously need to look towards an instant reply of the call from a group of officials that can then radio the true verdict down to the field ref.

They also really need to do more about the dishonesty of taking dives and pretending to be hurt or fouled.

Too much of that stuff really sours too many people. I have been playing soccer for most of my life and I am really put out with it.

True .. watching that game made me so mad that i'm switching my loyalty to argentina! I was expecting that the two countries would atleast play for pride (they are almost assured to go through). But both were very defensive, lacked intent, no creativity, nothing!

We'll have to differ there. They were outplayed in the 1st half, but enjoyed majority of possession in the second. Also they had a lot of shots on goal, and i can recall atleast 3 times when the US striker had to beat only the goalie, but just couldn't. Ghanaian goalie was good, but still ...

Anyways, i think Ghana will be beaten by Uruguay. Uruguay were wonderful against South Korea. Suvarez seems to be in sublime touch. That second goal was quite something.

US team did just fine. Top 16 is nothing to be ashamed of. Many would love to get this far.
A bit more discipline, stamina and endurance could have probably carry them over to the next round.

Here are my predictions -winers in bold ( you can post yours)

Germany vs. England
Argentina vs. Mexico
Netherlands vs. Slovakia
Brazil vs. Chile
Paraguay vs. Japan
Spain vs. Portugal

I'm going with Mexico to win it! I think they are a stronger team then last World Cup, aggressive and play dirty. Still haven't seen Germany play though.

Last World Cup France & Italy had good ball control, execution and quick passes. I didn't see any team dominant in those qualities this time around. :|

Not many brave selections there.  Portugal might just upset the Spanish, though.  The only really interesting selection is Japan over Paraguay.  The Japanese did play awfully well in their last group game.  But I think they'd still be a surprise quarter-finalist.

If Argentina progresses against Mexico, the Germany v Argentina matchup promises to be a fun one.

After watching England robbed of an obvious goal and seeing an obvious offside overlooked to give Argentina a goal, I have concluded that the World Cup is not about how the players play as much as how the refs decide to call the game. I have seen very uneven foul calling and cards given. I've seen bad flops awarded and others carded. There's no telling what they'll come up with next.

Yeah, I am really disheartened by all of that. They are going to have to incorporate an instant reply referee decision for the next world cup.

Those are pretty solid picks, but the last one is pretty iffy to me. Portugal could pull that one out. I can't pull for them at all though after seeing Renaldo's dishonest flopping and embellishing. How embarrassing...

Went with Spain based solely on my feelings towards Ronaldo. I hope he will do his best to win it all by himself. Then Spain is in for sure.

TOP 16 (my pics)

Argentina vs. Mexico 3-1  (Argentina moves on, Mexico .... good team but needed to push harder - especially in the 1st half)

Brazil vs. Chile
Paraguay vs. Japan
Spain vs. Portugal
