Even though I was a big fan of Carpenter's version of 'The Thing', when I look back and think about it, the original version was a better movie. I remember, as a kid, hiding under a blanket while watching it. The acting was great and the dialogue was some of the best I've heard. There was that certain way of delivery that's not done anymore. Plus, there were moments when it was truly frightening instead of gross and gory that added to the atmosphere. (I'm saying all of this from the perspective of a ten year old).
If you get a chance, check it out.

Great list Chappy!! ...Hitchhikers Guide too..."Thanks For All The FISH".

Guess what, +1. For those who may not have seen it, the original BBC version is excellent, and thoroughly enjoyed the updated version as well. Fun to see the cameos by actors from the original in the remake. Have both in the library.

Adding my 2nd '5' (to make 10)

6) Hitchhiker's Guide
7) Tron
8 ) The 5th Element
9) Buckaroo Banzai
10) tie  Dark City, The Man Who Fell to Earth, Starman, & all the Japanese Monster series: Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan, .......

Series/serials -
1) Dr Who
2) Red Dwarf
3) Outer Limits
4) Firefly
5) Star Wars

... and the first scene with the giant spaceship blew me away.  The ship seemed to go on for miles.

Which brings to mind  Spaceballs
The first time was kind of funny but no need to see it again.

The BBC production is available on DVD...I saw this back in the early 80s when PBS put it on the air in the US and was absolutely hooked.:
