" 5 the list shall be, and the list shall be 5, not 6 or 4 but 5 " ...LOL!

No problem. Which 5?  :D

I guess we could start another "5" list: Favorite SF movie monster/alien/robot/thingy.

20 Million Miles To Earth (sulfer-eating monster)
Matinee (Mant!)
Silent Running (Huey, Dewey, & Louie)
Star Trek The Motion Picture (V'ger)
Solaris (I guess it's the whole planet?)

Man this is fun!! Huey,Dewey and Louie!!! Bruce Dern in DUEL, right, the one with the madman in the tanker truck..was that DUEL? Anyway
Dern's stuff was always a trip.

I really thought more folks would have said Serenity, I really enjoy/enjoyed that film. Someone mentioned how the circumstances of our viewing impacted they're picks and they were so right...I'll never forget seeing Star Wars and the 3d holographic chess set and thinking we'll have that by the time I'm 40...I'm 52-anybody got one of those yet?? :eyebrows:

Barbarella
Gattaca
Donnie Darko
Ghost in the Shell: Innocence
Interstella 5555

I think I've seen Gattaca, but the other ones I've never heard of.  I'll have to add these to my NetFlix queue.

I saw Star Wars (the original) when it was playing in theaters.  I saw it in a large theater in Pittsburgh, PA, and the first scene with the giant spaceship blew me away.  The ship seemed to go on for miles.  I've seen this move many times and have to say I still love it.  I can't wait for my kids to get old enough to watch it.

Other than this, it gets too hard to choose.

Duel - not exactly scifi, but that was Dennis Weaver as the terrorized motorist.

If you "think" you've seen a movie, then it must be all too forgettable.  The really good movies I've seen that I liked, I "know" I've seen (and can remember quite a bit about them).

I thought the director's cut of Blade Runner was terrible. The theatrical cut was much better for me.

I think Blade Runner actually has 2 "directors cut" versions, one Ridley Scott did not like...

According to Wikipedia:

"Seven versions of the film have been shown for various markets as a result of controversial changes made by film executives. A rushed director's cut was released in 1992 after a strong response to workprint screenings. This, in conjunction with its popularity as a video rental, made it one of the first films released on DVD, resulting in a basic disc with mediocre video and audio quality.[8] In 2007, Warner Bros. released in select theaters, and subsequently on DVD, HD DVD, and Blu-ray, the 25th anniversary digitally remastered definitive Final Cut by Scott"

I actually had purchased the 5 disc Blu-Ray set, just found it the other day at a friends house!

My current favorites:

Blade Runner
Gattaca
2001
Alien or Aliens
The Matrix

I have that same 5 disc set...theatrical release has a narration (Harrison Ford's characters thoughts) that was not part of "Directors Cut" or "The Final Cut"... as far as image quality goes for blu-ray in my opinion "Directors Cut" is best.

I may have mentioned it before but "Hellboy II-The Golden Army" is my favorite blu-ray for picture quality and sound. Fantastic Four-Silver Surfer is up there also...just saw "Planet 51", not bad...animation sure has come a very, very long way.

Liked the movie too, as well as the series, but you limited us to '5'. Which most of us stretched anyway.   :D

Want to make that 10 ?  :eyebrows:

2.  Blade Runner
3.  Terminator
4.  Aliens
5.  Hmmm, wow...I'll go with Heavy Metal.  Yeah, definately, love that movie.

Ooo, 10?  OK... in no particular order:

My personal list:
Starwars
Blade Runner
Terminator
Alien / Aliens
Heavy metal
Matrix
Road Warrior
Dark Knight
Iron Man
Avatar

Ones I think that critics or movie historians would include (I liked them too):
2001
Dune
Tron
THX1138
Logans Run
1984
Planet of the Apes
District 9
Watchmen
Body Snatchers

I have a tough time choosing favorites, so I'm going to cheat a bit:

Metropolis, Serenity, Solaris and Stalker (both by Tarkovsky), 2001 and Clockwork Orange, Dark City, City of the Lost Children

Nice. Still haven't seen Serenity (or firefly).

These may not be the best but on an island you'd have to pry them from
my cold, dead hands.

1. Stalker
2. Back to the Future
3. Aliens
4. Ghostbusters
5. Stargate

All Time

1. Stalker
2. Metropolis
3. 2k1
4. Aliens
5. Empire Strikes BAck

Duel - not exactly scifi, but that was Dennis Weaver as the terrorized motorist.

A good follow-up if you can find it (i think vhs only) is The Car...

Gonna give you my top five of serials not movies-
Firefly
Alien
Red Dwarf
Doctor Who
BattleStar Galactica (the latest which includes Caprica)  The old was riveting for me in my youth, but I would hate to revisit it now.
Ascending....Descending list- depends on the day

District 9?
Ok, ya wanna hear a good one?  My better half (in Doha right now) let me choose a once yearly date we could go on at that time.  3 kids under 12.   She did not have the time or want to expend the time to research.  I was busy myself, but I love Sci-fi.  D9 had the best reviews in that week, I did not read them.  :duh:
For the first 1/2 I would look over and ask if she wanted to leave.  She is a trooper, but I did catch a bit of flack on the first 3/7 of the movie that I should not be asking anymore.  Once we crossed over the 4/7 threshold, I did not have the guts nor the attention span to avert my gaze from the screen to ask the same (do you want to leave?) question again.
She by the way, was pleased with the movie.  Which is VERY highly regarded.  If you want to know, I thoroughly enjoyed it, sans worrying what the wifey was thinking.

There have been a lot of great films listed so far.  Rather than repeats those I'm going to throw some that are off the beaten path (and might be thought of real fun but quirky) or not mentioned so far.

6.    Children of the Damned
7.    Crack in the World
8.    Colossus: The Forbin Project
9.    Dark Star
10.  Demon Seed

Honorable Mentions (Sorry for the long list but like potato chips I couldn't just stop at one.) -

King Kong (Original)
Godzilla - King of the Monsters (Original)
Rodan
Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster
The Damned
Dr. Who and the Daleks
Daleks - Invasion Earth: 2150 A.D.
