Not sure on that --- I assume it would need a playlist?

In the minimalist setup I mentioned, it would be equivalent to an iPod Shuffle (you have no display, just play/stop/ffw/rwd controls). The Shuffle works with or without a playlist. If there's no playlist, it can play sequentially (alphabetical order of files).
Maybe you could check with engineering. It would be nice both for demos and real use if you could just copy one or more wav file(s) on a thumb drive, insert it into the media player and voila it plays music, without the need to create a playlist first.
If this is not possible and we really need playlist files, then the manual should have some info on the accepted playlist file formats, so we would know which playlists would be compatible and which not.
