I'm sorry, my post above wasn't very clear.  I meant comparing the sound of a commercial CD played on the BCD-1 to a copy of that same CD burned to a computer drive, using software like the Exact Audio Copy referenced a few pages earlier.  I suspect that this is the most likely scenario for people who want to archive their investment in compact discs.  Good luck with the comparison, James, we eagerly await your findings!

hi Werd,

I am going to try that tonight - I know it works great on Media Monkey and Foobar.

Hi James
Wandering if you got around to trying this?

Use vinyl as the reference  :icon_twisted:

Nap.  :peek:

This is accurate, why are you hiding?

You want the dac to go pure analogue, or as close to it as possible. this isn't the case with red book.

Hi werd,

Yes tried it - does not work.  We are going to build IR into the BDP-1 digital Player to allow the BR2 to control the play list like it does with Media Monkey, Foobar and Itunes.

Thats good news.... did you try hooking up the bda to the computer via usb, while hooking up  the bdp1  via xlr also? that might work.

Yup tried that - doesn't work with the BDP-1 but does with the BDA-1 with Itunes, MM and Foobar etc.

Because that's not accurate either.... you don't know what they recorded on that vinyl... I was just poking some fun at James....

If you're asking me.... I guess James should arm himself with some sort of acoustic instruments (spanish guitar, drums, cymbals and whatever he could use to produce decent sounds with, without the need of actually knowing how to play them for real; violin is a no go,  eh?). And some really good LPCM recorder (shock and horror, it's Sony that makes a good one) and microphone. And do some recordings himself. Burn CD's. Play CD's. Play 24/96 file. Play the instrument through mic/amp/speakers. Play just the instrument. Listen. Compare.

Very difficult. But he might actually enjoy it, it could be fun too.

Oh sorry, my response wasnt clear. What i tried to say is, this is accurate about using vinyl output to reference, you were right.

Vinyl would be better than redbook  cd playback for comparison here.

cant quote atm ... buggy

Hi

Always usb from laptop to bda..... can't understand why people bag out on it, the usb? mind you my RM-20 picked up the performance of my whole system so i guess usb is benefiting from this. Thats my take on it.

Nothing related to audio performance.... but knowing how crappy the power supply and other electronics are in computers these day, I wouldn't let them have any electrical connection to my precious Bryston.... optical cable all the way.....

I run on battery only, never plug in. the usb is much nicer than optical here, It really is. When my laptop goes dead so does my listening time. which is ok since i get about 2 hours, which is enough.

Hi werd,

I have the Mac Pro laptop hooked up optically and use the USB as well and that gives me the use of the BR2 remote on Itunes.

Hi

There is something organic about the usb that i like. Mind you i havent tried the optical other than on my creative usb/coax-optical adapter which is starts out as usb.

i put so much attention into making this system  very responsive at casual listening levels. Aside from cabling and my 14B, my Torus put so much more jam into the soundstage that it seemed to offset my original usb complaint, it sounding a little wimped out.

Hi James,

I've already congratulated you for the choice.... now the question - are you intending to implement simple commands like "folder forward" "file forward" "play" "stop", so it could work in a minimal setup? Like just the media player + USB hard disk + BR2 (no computer or iPod Touch)?

Thanks,
Nap

Yes just the simple commands like Next, Previous, Stop, Play, Pause.

I load the playlist - turn off the lights - and use my BR2 remote like that now with Media Monkey and Itunes rather than the itouch.

Cool. What happens if the hard drive does not contain any playlist? Just a bunch of .wav files? Will it be able to initiate playback of them (let's say in alphabetical order of filenames)?

Thanks,
Nap

Not sure on that  --- I assume it would need a playlist?

In the minimalist setup I mentioned, it would be equivalent to an iPod Shuffle (you have no display, just play/stop/ffw/rwd controls). The Shuffle works with or without a playlist. If there's no playlist, it can play sequentially (alphabetical order of files).

Maybe you could check with engineering. It would be nice both for demos and real use if you could just copy one or more wav file(s) on a thumb drive, insert it into the media player and voila it plays music, without the need to create a playlist first.

If this is not possible and we really need playlist files, then the manual should have some info on the accepted playlist file formats, so we would know which playlists would be compatible and which not.
