James,

Do you have an opinion on the end to end performance of a system with a Torus installed based on the earlier model squared amps versus one with the upgraded squared amps?

Would the Torus's affect by marginialized?

I struggled with that one myself and I think if you have the newer amps the Torus becomes redudant if your just looking at the power delievery on transients aspect.  If you consider all the other benefits of the Torus in a system then that off-sets that conclusion of course.

:icon_lol: I have to laugh. I got my new 14B in the wall and it sounds nice. unlike my 4b that use to suffer from the plug. It was a nite and day comparison with the 4b. You could hear the wall the squeeze power from the 4B. The 14b actually imo sounds better in the wall now than in the torus. it seems to be over energized. too much of a good thing plugged into the Torus.

i have tried my tunes with the 4b and the bp26 in the Torus and my front end plugged into the wall.
thought i might get better quieter sound  keeping the front end out the Torus. But it kinda lost a bit of lustre in the wall and didnt keep up to the pre and power some how. It sounded better all plugged into the Torus.

Kind of confused right now......

Hi James,
Thanks for the detailed feedback and for thinking of me!  The info helps to clarify even more what's involved or being played out in the power transformer developments.  Nothing is ever as simple as it first appears. It is however very exciting news, more so for people like Werd and Dyna who don't need to send their new amps back . . ........yet? (kidding on the "yet" part). In all seriousness, Bryston should continue, when it can, to improve on a already great sounding product.   Great question  Gtaphile on the redundancy issue. In my earlier post (other thread) I had totally forgotten about the "Torus factor".

It's great I don't have to send 5 amps back. That would be quite a chunk of change.

Hi gtaphile,

I have a pair of 7B SST2's that have the upgraded power supply, SN 1850 and 1851.  They were installed in late June '09.  Over the holidays I installed the Torus CS 15 and experienced an immediate and significant improvement.  Below is a cut and paste from another thread of my post describing my immediate reaction:

I just installed my CS 15 today.  Forget about the reduced price.  This thing is worth at least what its price used to be if not more.  It's taking my breath away.  It's almost 2 AM where I live and I can't shut down and go to bed.  Right out of the box it has made a huge difference.  I can only conclude it is giving my 7B's what they need when they need it which they can't get straight out of the wall.  I think it is two things, first is the isolation from the wall making 300 amps available for half a cycle and the fraction of an ohm impedence it presents the 7's.  I'm here to tell you this Torus CS 15 is an absolute steal at $2K US.  Not only that but it is a knockout looking piece of gear.  Mine is silver and looks just great with my silver Bryston gear.  I guess it's a guy thing, only we could see beauty in a power isolation transformer.  Kind of like I love the smell of new tires and fresh motor oil.  OK, I'm rambling so just go get yourself the Torus of your choice without delay.

Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night

BTW, the prices Bryston is asking to do the upgrades is very fair when you consider the price increases last June ocurred not long after SN 1826 came off the the line.  Therefore most owners who have the upgraded PS paid a higher price for the amps than those who have the previous PS.

I bought mine the day before the price increase,Thankfully. It would have set me back about 3 grand with shipping  had I waited any longer.

So did I which explains why our SN's are so close.  I wonder who has 1848 and 1849?

Hi 95Dyna,

Thanks for responding. I had read your thread before and that is one of the reasons I have a CS15 on order. Then the squared upgrade opportunity surfaced and I am on that path now.

I have had many Bryston products over the years and the changes from model to model, although evolutionary by design are always much more to my ears.

I hope this combination is also the case.

The 4B and the torus works beautifully. With bigger model amps now the Torus works really nice on the front end  even if you use the wall for the amps.

Having said that, i probably would not have bought the Torus if knew about the transformer upgrades.

I don't agree with Jame's downplay that these are small upgrades. This is a big adjustment imo.

I'll tell ya what, you and werd have me thinking now.  You posed the question and werd described an experience with his new 14B whereby he thinks he might have too much of a good thing with it plugged into the Torus.  I've actually had that sense as well but only with SOME recordings.  On others the Torus effect is as I described in my Christmas Eve rant.  Recording quality is so variable it drives you nuts when trying to diagnose replay quality.  I'm going to plug my 7's into the wall after having them in the Torus for 6 or 8 weeks and see what happens.

I agree.  The price of the upgrade is fair.  The reason I said that is because my preamp has optional remote control.  That's $500 option when it is all said and done.

Upgrades are great move for Bryston because this just gives more value and customer loyalty.

James,

At one time Bryston was offering upgrades on the 9B-ST.  Are you still offering upgrades on the 9B?
