These were taken from the balcony of a beach house at Carolina Beach  - D40 with 18-200mm VR lens, mostly 200mm

Brown Pelicans have webbed feet, the only pelican that plunges from the air into the water to catch its food

They are actually looking over the wave into the water!

"Kookaburra sits in the 'ol gum tree
Eating all the gumdrops he can see
Laugh kookaburra, laugh kookaburra
Gay your life must be"

-Kookaburra song from my grade school music class

I cannot vouch for the scientific accuracy of this tune, though!  I think Johnr must've posted a shot of one of those before as well.

Nathanm, is your response to the previous photo?  That's not a Kookaburra.  There's one in my local bird store and it looks like the photo on Wikipedia:

Doh! I thought it might be a variety of one.  Hmmm...how about "Grey Butcher Bird"

Not as catchy of a song with that name,  though! :P

Great-tailed Grackle

This bird has an amazingly loud whistle and is not shy about stealing food from any unguarded plate.

That bird's got it all wrong: it's the middle of the day, no broken wings, eyes not sunken and by the looks of him, has only been waiting a few days for this moment to arrive.

Here's a pelican I snuck up on while kayaking in the backwaters of Oak Island, NC.

That's a great Pelican shot - that's a  Brown Pelican.

I will be at Holden Beach at the end of September, just 10 miles away - will be looking for some good shots!

Cute birdie, raja.  You even left enough negative space for the magazine headers!

Thanks nathan,

Yes, it would look good on the cover of Audubon Magazine. :D

I could have cropped some of the sky but I liked the feeling that the bird is hanging out in space.

That's a little guy, the thorns are as big as his feet! What kind is that?

From a recent vacation to Edisto Beach, South Carolina
All taken form a Nikon D40 with a Nikkor 55-200 1:4-5.6G ED lens.

I've got a couple dozen more photos of birds from the beach. Mostly Sea gulls, and those little hyper things that run from the encroaching wave. If anybody has an overwhelming desire to see them, I can put them in the gallery, just ask. I'll be glad to. I've been looking for an excuse to add more vacation photos to the gallery, just need a little 'kick in the pants' I suppose.
