LP to Digital Converter
« on: 5 Apr 2009, 11:38 pm »
Hi Frank,

Is there any chance of an AVA LP to Digital Converter?  I'm thinking of something like http://news.ecoustics.com/bbs/messages/10381/559710.html, with AVA quality.

Maybe connecting to a preamp output, with an analog to digital converter and a USB interface?

Anyone else have an interest in something like this?

I suppose that if I wanted to listen to some music in my car that I only had on LPs, this type of converter might be useful.  Otherwise, I don't think that I would convert an analog source to digital to then convert back to analog (through one of my AVA DACs) to play on my home system.  But you never know.  If I had a second system, such as in my non-existent vacation home or my office (which could also become non-existent), this would potentially be very useful when the alternative would be to transport LPs to another location (like we did when we were younger, bringing LPs to parties, etc.).  However, I don't know, even then, if I would use this enough to be cost and time effective.

With newer music, I buy the music on both CDs and LPs, when LPs are available.   If not, I just buy the CDs.  When I have both the LP and CD, I prefer to listen to the LP rather than the CD.

Mine never left the house! I was too afraid of fingerprints, smoke and dull phonograph needles!

Tascam makes a nice USB box to convert your analog output to digital and get it into your computer for about $120. You can get it at  http://www.americanmusical.com/Item--i-TAS-US144-LIST
I think M-Audio also makes the same thing for about the same price.

I pretty sure Frank won't put a digital output in his phono preamp.

Hi Wayner,

Thanks, your suggestion looks similar to what I have in mind.  I'll have to check if it would be quiet enough and have high enough sound quality.

I'm looking for a box to convert an audio analog signal from a preamp into a high quality digital signal that can be saved on a computer hard drive (not looking for adding a digital output from the preamp).  I was thinking that this is something Frank might be able to do, maybe in a special functions chassis.

This would be to archive my LPs, and then serve them as digital files to a DAC for playback on my two channel system (hope this isn't considered by anyone as a heretical line of thought).   :)

Two Tascam units I've found so far with more extensive capabilities, but would require some additional savings before being able to purchase:

Sorry if my previous post was confusing.

How about "The Ripper", based on the quality of Jim's other electronics I think this would be an excellent product.

Wow, Wayne,

Thanks, it looks like you might have hit a home run.  That could have a good enough phono preamp.  I'll have to check it out more.

tubesforever is building the ultimate power supply that would take "The Ripper" to the next level.

Behringer has the UCA202 for much less and it seems to work pretty well.

Tascam also makes a free standing CD-burner, CD-RW900SL,
that I have connected to my AVA Super PAS3. Vinyl/LP copies
to CD are a joy to listen to. This CD-burner sounds so good I
don`t feel a need to upgrade the op-amps in the analog section
with better chips, like I`ve done in the past with CD-players etc.

I have copied LPs for a couple people with surprisingly good results. All I have is a cable from tape out of my T8 into my computer's Audigy sound card. The music steams through and I use Easy Cd Creator 5's Spin Doctor to capture and save it to disc. :thumb:
