Way to get moving on things 2bigears. Some say MMG's are the some of best $500 (new) you can spend in audio. They are like that cracked window, letting in a breath of fresh air but of course you want to open the window more and well you know what happens next.

I still miss my MMG's and 1.6's, many times I say from a simple music enjoyment standpoint I could have been happy there, especially now that there are deep bass solutions. Of course they have their limitations but... Let me tell you the glory I hear from my friend's treaked 20's is mesmerizing. Like swimming in an ocean of sonic waves and then coming home to your pool.

At any rate, if you can swing the 1.6's I'd say go for it. All I can say is given room to breathe, they are so enchanting, they don't do it all but they know their strengths and play to them. For me, one of those speakers that make you forget the checklist and just enjoy what this baby is all about. You may not marry her, but years will go by and you say I should have, I should have kept that magic in my life because that's what makes me feel more alive. Yeah, my honey now works, cooks, cleans and take good care of the kiddies but she doesn't have that...Mmmm. And many men leave and find Maggie again and say I should have never left you baby, you were what I wanted all along but I just needed to wander to find my way home. "Mama may have, Papa may have, but...

Here's a pic of my xover mods, 1st in the experimental phase and then the final product. I was set to sorta Gunn them up when another temptation game knocking. "I'm on my way, home sweet home." If I ever find a place where Maggie and I can live together happily. Maggie don't know about my stacked Quad affair, shhh...Electric Ladyland.

nice stuff launche,good read and pics.i did make the mistake on bidding 60 secs too soon,i had to pay 540.00 for the mmg's. the mod is 1500 or so...... not a big outlay of cash.i have 'no' idea what these will sound like.i do know they are way different and electric in character....should be fun.

Seems a bit high for used MMG's unless some tweaks were done, even still... But you can always sell MMG's although maybe at a slight loss. But it's good you will spend some time with the MMG's before the Gunn mods to see if you like the basic sound these smaller Maggie's offer (Some people dig 'em, some don't) I've never heard Peter's mods but he has good word of mouth about them and they sure look nice.
The MMGs kinda present music in an open soundscape and cut from one cloth so to speak (smallish sweet spot with close listening distances.) They don't highlight things and are also are not doing any serious business at the freq. extremes (as you move up the chain, you get these extras). Maggies soak up watts like a sponge so get a capable amp. Reading up on maggies will keep you busy for sure, but with them it's about what you hear and if it moves you.

Hope they work for you, maybe this is where you'll be in a few months.

hey,that system looks good.the mmg's are going straight to PG for his mods.i will only hear his modded units.my hear a stock set of 1.6's if the guy still has them for sale....

did you build those subs yourself ?? those are subs ????

Yes, those are Duke's Swarms. The pic is from a client of Peter's from his website. I think Peter may be using the Swarms also. This is what Peter said on another forum:

"If you have the room I honestly believe no sub system is better than Dukes "Swarm". You can see them on his website.

I see now however he's also calling it "The Planetarium bass system".... oh well, a rose by any other name....

In short it's the only sub system designed especially for planars, and what it does and adds extends well up into the mids. So, 2bigsears you might want to give Duke a call. Now I surely want to hear Maggies with a bass augmenting system like Duke's.

The maggies not only like wattage, but also respond well to high current. In my bedroom system I have 1.6's hooked up to a Musical Fidelity A5 Integrated (with over 130 amps of current) and they match up very well.

thks for the good info as usual guys.i pm'ed Duke to ask if he had any subs for sale.sounds like a good thing to do.my amp is a MF 750KW which has 1.1kw's at 8 ohm.should be enough power.

they say the mmg's are musical,hope they do rock ok ??

Oh that amps with due more than enough and with Duke's subs I imagine they will do rock OK. Gunn's mods may bring the MMG's to a level most of us haven't heard, so you let us know. Maggie's aren't my first choice for rock but as long as you're being realistic there sound good. I'm looking forward to see how this all turns out for you, awaiting your impressions.

Just a matter of common math/engineering, but your typical '15 amp' outlet provides just that: 15 amps (and not for long). Bump it to a 20 amp circuit and the situation is similar. 130 amps? At 110 volts, your house wiring will fry in less than a fraction of a second.

I'm not saying you're wrong. But amplifiers with a high capacity for current storage (large capacitance) may sustain a super high current draw for a millionth of a second, but the Maggie fuses (typically 5A and less) will not support that kind of current. Even the slo-blow variety.

I've heard the 3.6 sound fantastic in a 14 X 18 room with a REL subwoofer. They just take some to set up properly. I grew up with Maggies (GREAT speakers) that have truly stood the test of time. I also like that they don't keep updating to version 2, 3, etc. every couple of years. The 3.6's have been around almost 10 years.

thks guys, the MMG's are on a truck from Orange County to PG's place in PA.he tells me the MMG's get the music right in a good way.does anyone know if Duke has any sub & amps still for sale ?? this is a low cost panel speaker experement.kinda interested in panels and should be fun.should have the modded little Maggies by March.i gotta get the sub thing figured out now.Danny at GR could also help me out there i quess,do i need three or four subs ???? still have the 3.6's in the back of my mind....

I'm very close to pulling the trigger on a pair of 3.6s, too. I miss that Maggie Magic from when I had my MMGs...I would expect the 3.6s to be a spiritual experience

those mmg's are damn good for 5 bills,give em time to breakin,because they will really open up,i used mine with a 80 watt harmon kardon amp,you could hook up 2oo watts and they would probably be fine the bass was really quite good and went deeper then i thought it would,but the set up for was in home theatre deal with a hk preamp that wasnt nearly the equal of the hk amp,they were set up in a rectangular room on the long wall,i sold them years later for 150 so as to downsize and get away from home theatre, this might sound weird,but they were a distraction while watching movies because they sounded so good it took away from paying attention to what was going on in the movie.Most of the time i was ,damn that sounds good,what just happened on the screen.Very clean bass.Man they do like wattage,they just suck it up.

Oh my god are you serious ?800 watts,they are most definitely a speaker that will show off the rest of your set up,like i said i had the hk 5 channel home theatre pre that just really didnt do a thing for the maggies,but the hk amp was ok.I was kind of in a downsize mode at the time,we had a really nice entertainment stand made by my wifes gramps,with a 27 in jve set in it and various shelves and levels to it,to say he was a master woodworker would have been a understatement,i'll get pics up sooner or later of my stereo i have at this time and throw in some of that entertainment stand he made.

Well Magnaplaner company is a straight shooter,and after awhile in this hobby it gets a bit frustrating with outrageous claims from alot of companies,but this company has very good products and i say at fair prices.
