Mike:

This album received an outstanding review in the U.S. Today earlier this week.  I guess you are saying it won't disappoint Metallica Fans like me!

Got this album yesterday.  Wow, it just screams of the Ride the Lighting and Master of Puppets era.  And perhaps some of And Justice for All as well.  Pretty good album, kind of what I was hoping St. Anger would have been like.  I'm still more of a fan of the Load era albums (you can begin the floggings now), but Death Magnetic is a worthwhile addition for any metal fan.

Anyone heard the vinyl version? Trying to figure out if they pressed it from an analog master.

Had heard that the digital version might have been victimized by the loudness war, any comments?

I picked up the CD yesterday evening.

Musically IMO I thinking it is the best since And Justice For All and is similar in style to their work in the 80's.  However, the compression on the CD is terrible.  The best comparison I can make is listening to U2 Actung Baby (excellent dynamics) vs. U2 How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb (zero dynamics).  Of course I listen to Metallica loud.  However, on Death Magnetic the compression is so bad that the drums have no resolution.

Very sad to see that Metallica made a very good CD and screwed it up with compression.  The compression is so bad that after about 30 minutes it gives you a headache.

I agree about the compression.  A remastered version would be much better.  But what else do we expect from Metallica?

I would not blame the band.  I blame an industry that over compresses most recent pop/rock records!

I am ripping mine right now and will give it a listen shortly.

Worst case scenario is that I just listen to it at work and on the iPod.

Disappointed! Comparing it to early Metallica is like comparing apples to oranges! Early stuff TONS better than this album! I cant believe I wasted my 15 bucks on it. Got a headache and didnt even listen to a quarter of it. Skimmed through the cd hoping for one good song and didnt find one. Just my 2 cents

I'm going to hope for a remaster based on what I've read here and there. They lost me when they started doing the same old formula lyrically and structure wise. AJFO was the last album I could even muscle through without wanting to break something. Load was a pants load of crap.

Vintage Metallica is a tough animal for them to top IMO.

Check out the Guitar Hero 3 version. You don't need the game to get a copy of the Death Magnetic version. It is a night and day difference in production quality. You have to hear it to believe me, but it sounds like the GH3 versions are actually them playing the sound live in the studio without any (or a lot of) effects.  With my setup, the CD version is loud at -50 on the Denon volume scale, put in the GH3 version, you have to crank it down to -30 to get the same volume level. Plus, with the GH3 version, you can actually hear the bass.

YEah too bad on the mastering... Its still a great album though, musically. YEs its not equal to old Metallica, well its different, so Id call it a progression of sound in the choices they made to get here.

You guys call yourself audiophiles? the album is compressed to DEATH its totally unlistenable!
Can we uncompress it and recirculate it? I guess youd have to go back to the original tape... Why did Metallica make such a bad choice with mastering. They are musicians and obviously should care about the sound.
I listen mostly in my car or on my second system which is not quite audiophile so..
