it's not about Metallica remastering the CD anymore... its about the next CD that is in the mixing stage right now. Can we make the producer think about it at least, instead of making one that's just as brickwalled as the rest of the 2008 releases?

Elbow's album was "certified" by http://www.TurnmeUp.org/ for having good dynamics* - and it's the mercury Prize winner for album of the year.

* it's still loud by pre-loudness war era CDs but its an improvement.

Whats the LP sound like, anyone know?

Steve

I hate to say it, because I really like Metallica, but this is the worst sounding LP
I've heard in a long time.  Very compressed and the treble is tilted up so far
I can't stand it!  Very dissapointing for a collaboration of Metallica and Rick Rubin.

Maybe next record will be better.  Going to see them in Portland next month,
so we'll see.  I'm sure they are still great live!

The vinyl sounds better in my system than the CD.

Gonna have to try the GH3 version.
Keep it simple!

The 45 RPM releases of Ride the Lightning and Master O' Puppets sound REALLY good to me.
Probably makes at least 10 copies of each that I've bought.  Tape, vinyl, CD, CD after I lost it, CD remaster, gold CD, vinyl box set, vinyl 45rpm.....

Wow, I never had any real ill feelings towards Metallica until I read that.  FUCK YOU Lars!  "That's how we do records in 2008."  Yeah we KNOW, that's the problem.  There isn't anything exciting or jump-out-of-the-speakers about these mixes, they're flat and boring.  What is music going to be like in 50 years anyway?  How much distortion can people take?  There's nowhere to go with this approach.  Just more and more hard clipping.

It's so depressing.  Maybe professional musicians' hearing is so destroyed from live concerts that they just don't have the same perspective that normal listeners do.  Maybe they are so deafened that only shouting sounds normal.

The GH3 version is way better. You want it loud, theres something called a volume knob. I t will jump out of the speakers then. At least people can make a choice, Ive already gotten rid of the cd tracks.

Disappointing because Lars could do something about it if he wanted to.

Where is Fleming Rasmussen when we need him? :duh:

If thats his vision then he is as blind as Ray Charles!!! That really turned me off to Metallica. If it was me I would be like Donald Trump, YOUR FIRED!

Got the GH3 version - quite nice.  Sounds more 'relaxed' - flows better

Does the 45rpm sound better than the Rhino box?  Are you referring to the DCC gold discs?  If so ho doea the 45rpm compare to those?  I bought the Ride the Lightning 33 rpm and it was horrible.  The Rhino box set and DCC gold blew it away.

I can't stand the new Metallica, but I've thought they sucked since they released the "Black" album so I'm not surprised how bad it is.

I honestly haven't opened the collector's box set.
I have at least 3 copies of each album on vinyl (except Load 1, Reload 0, and St. Anger 1), so I didn't feel the need to open it.
Garage Days Revisited on 2 LPs sounds pretty good too.

The 45 rpm vinyl is the best I've heard them sound (except for maybe live in '84)

I didn't read this whole post but I must say, Great album, it's about time, but production value what were the engineers thinking this is a crapy sounding album no matter how you spin it.

I wanted to go bad but funds are short. I have seen then 4 or 5 times and every time it is most awesome. I have seen Metallica play almost 4 hour shows. Than there was that time on acid 2nd row, but we won't talk about that. :P

Being a long time fan, the recording quality of St Anger was disappointing. Very thin sounding which is not what one would expectwhen listening to a band such as Metallica. I bought it despite all the bad press it received.
I truly hope they start listening to their fans and remaster these albums.
Even "One" on Wii Guitar Hero is a much better experience. Are we going to have to buy video games just to get better sound from Metallica albums?

"One" is off of Justice.  Good recording but they killed Jason's bass in the mix.

Way before they let Bob Rock near the recording/mixing controls.
St. Anger = ouch, recording wise.

Seen them live 20+ times

And that's why everyone needs a Manley Massive Passive studio EQ!
:)

It's not cheap, but boy does it fix those records....
