Sony lenses

If Sony ever releases this thing. They also apparently have the big telephoto guns ready to go with it. They better move real fast though, Canon ain't gonna wait for them to catch up. Nikon may also soon release a D3X, or variant at 22-26 mp. Sony has there work cut out for them, to carve out some kind of market, to say the least.

Hey!

It is scheduled to be release near the end of this year. This 24MP FF camera had been rumored for a while now in Sony users circle. Even for a Sony user like myself this is a surprise for me. But it is good to see how old Minolta team and Sony could come up with.

If Minolta's tradition continue than it is likely that this camera will be name the A900. We still have to wait of how good this camera will be. But it seem like now Sony and their user will have a big gun to brag about, just like Canon and Nikon.

But this is good news for Nikon and Canon users also. I'm pretty sure that Nikon and Canon also now have something in their lab or already on their shelf to compete with this camera. And with this Sony 24MP out it will likely keep the price of Nikon and Canon soon to be big gun camera price more competitive on the market.

It is unlikely that I will be able to afford this camera

But it will pave the way to more affordable higher MP camera in a few years.

BTW... that chunk of glass on the camera that you see in the photo is the new Sony's Zeiss 24-70mm f2.8 T*... yes is it a real Zeiss with T* coating.

It is available now $1800 I think and it is a full frame zoom and this will also work with older Minolta AF film camera bodies.

I read the press releases pretty carefully when Konica/Minolta announced that they were getting out of the camera business. I was thinking of buying one of their DSLRs when it was announced. As I understood it, they sold their camera business to Sony, but not the lenses. They still make the lenses. They make a lot things besides cameras.

I took the chance on buying the DSLR and it has worked out great. Sony is pushing ahead much faster than I ever expected. So fast that every time I get close to upgrading they bring out yet another body. It's like HDTVs. I'll probably never buy one because I keep reading about the next one coming out.

BTW, the thing that tipped it in favor of the Konica/Minolta was the built in anti-shake. Besides saving a ton of money over having to buy individual lenses with it built-in, the selection of lenses for Canon and Nikon that had it built-in was really small. This way I can buy any lense I want and get the anti-shake.

A fellow Minolta/Sony user like me here? Well, what do you know now I have a friend here to share and talk about my camera system with.

Yes, the Anti-shake... Sony renamed Super Steady Shot works beautifully.

To be able to stabilize those primes lenses is pretty amazing actually

Imagine be able to stabilize a 35mm f1.4 or 50mm f1.7.

The credit goes to those Minolta people that were the first to come up with this great idea.

Just wondering which model do you have? Lenses?

Pretty soon you'll have Phil to sound off on! May be even me, if I decide on getting an A350, tho I don't, and won't, have any Minolta lenses to rave about..... or talk on the same plain with you since you're a pro....... My first SLR was actually a Minolta. But, I found its optics on the cool side, unlike the Zeiss, so I never developed a fetish for Minolta.

Guess their anti-shake technology is very good.

If you do get Sony APS-C DSLR do get the Sony's Zeiss 16-80mm (24-120mm in 35mm) f3.5-4.5 @$690 it is a superb zoom lens

But of course you get more respect with Canon or Nikon around you neck

I ordered it yesterday, and yes, got that lens too. It's supposed to arrive tomorrow, just in time for Memorial Day Weekend...

Thanks Buddy. No offense to all the Canon and Nikon camera owners in the world. They're the most popular, absolutely. It's just my own preference for Zeiss. Zeiss optics, even the Japanese lust after the Zeiss lens technology. Otherwise, why would Sony want to even make them? Just to keep those die-hard Zeiss devotees I guess.

Phil, I know it is early but congratulation on you new DSLR.

That is beautiful zoom with great range. I use this zoom all the time with my A700.

BTW... did you get an UV filter to protect the lens? You know some people don't like to leave an UV filter on their lens... like my boss he always take it off before shooting but leave it on when not using the lens or while handling the lens.

For me it is worth it to keep it on the lens all the time. Currently I have Hoya Pro 1 UV on my zoom. It is very transparent that I don't feel it effect anything. I might try Heliopan with it Schott Glass someday. Well, it will be painful if you scratch the front element of that zoom!

I hope you get the camera on time for this holiday weekend. Although I rarely use any special setting but on the A350 there are many settings you could use. And it will take a while to get use to your new camera. So, let me know how do you like the camera

It arrived this morning! The battery charged in a few hours, so I walked around the neighborhood trying it out. It is a HUGE step up over my Canon S2 IS superzoom point&shoot, and I'm very happy with it so far. I didn't get any filters, but am starting to look into it.

I have a long way to go to re-acquaint myself with using an SLR, but here are some shots I took just using the auto mode (obviously downsized resolution to put here on AC):

Anyway, a good filter is worth it.

I rather scratch my $70 UV filter than my $700 Zeiss zoom

So, meanwhile be careful with the lens.

Buddy...I took these pictures around my neighborhood this afternoon. The red doors and the forest-looking one were taken about 2 blocks from my house on a 2 acre property that is privately owned, but operates a farm that is accessible to the public (yes, those trees are actually very tall...I'd guess they are at least 100ft tall). The others were all taken within 50 yards of my house (the red leaves were from the Japanese Maple tree next to my front door)...
