Need the complete discography - what artist?
« on: 27 Mar 2008, 11:28 am »
Some artists just have a production that is superb.
And once you get that first cd - you just NEED to check out all
that this dude/dudette have made, and you need to get it all!

I usually find what album of an artist is the best, then I just buy that one.
But some times, you also need the lot that they have made.

So, Elvis? The Beatles? The stones? What?

No...

For me it is Knut Reiersrud, one of the best blues masters in Norway if you ask me!!!
What CD should one start with? I'd start with SUB. The 1999 release.
Oh, the quality of this record is immense!!!

I've collected all of Bill Friselll's (my favorite guitarist) solo releases, and quite a few of his sideman stints. But a complete collection of everything he's ever appeared on would be quite a collecting odyssey. I also have pretty much everything Stravinsky ever wrote, my favorite classical artist. I also have about everything that Tim & Neil Finn did though their Split Enz, Crowded House and solo careers. I think those two brothers are the best popular songwriting team since Lennon/McCartney. Hard to say why a particular artist lights our fire isn't it?

I became fond of Camel a long time ago. Many have suggested that they are better than Pink Floyd. While I see some similarities, I enjoy the closeness of the music and Andy Latimers guitar work. They are also not afraid to do instrumentals that are also out of this world. How do I describe the sound? Psychedelic/blues/folk...or something like that. At least they came out of the "art rock era".

Miles Davis.

While chasing down Herbie Hancock recordings in the early 70's, I picked up a Miles album simply because Herbie was listed...didn't know who Miles was...Miles Davis? who the puck is he...shit, after hearing the album, it was Miles all the way, find everything he recorded.  8)

Ras Algethi, it's pretty easy as they only ever made one record.  But it they ever put out another I'd buy it.  Actually I like that they only made one, it makes it more timeless.  If only every band knew when to quit.

The Bad Plus — I really have no idea why, but for some reason I've got all their stuff, er maybe close to.  I don't even like them all that much.  Must be the HiFi nerd sound factor, or perhaps the idea that if one can claim to understand such meandering noodling and dischordant chaos then it must be a mark of one's distinctive tastes, even though nobody else is around to pass such judgements.  The hard-panned instruments are kind of weird too.

Dead Can Dance — I've got all the studio albums at least.  Compilations are redundant, I don't count those.  I like some albums more than others, but as a whole they can essentially do no wrong.

Most recently, Sweden's Witchcraft has been my buy-it-sight-unseen choice.  It's refreshing to hear low-gain guitar for a change.  And non-triggered real world drums with…room ambience.  *gasp* is that allowed?  It ought to be encouraged.

The Lord Weird Slough Feg — that reminds me, I'm a bit behind on their discography.  First album is proof that rough recordings with crunchy tape dropouts can overcome as long as the tunes are great.

Wow! That was awesome LoneWolfNy42

He's playing a "Grieg -ified" "slott", that is Norwegian Folk music originally played with a type
of violin called Hardingfele/"Hardanger fiddle".
To be able to play that on a guitar, speaks volumes!!!!  :thumb: :guitar:

You could like call him the RY Cooder of Norway I guess, in that some of Knut's records are also
the result of going out in the world and finding those local musicians where they live, and mixing blues
with folk music and world music and even hint's of Norwegian classical music heroes of the really old times.

His recordings are always massively dynamic, and atmospherically dense and breathes as you can see on that
youtube vid with just a wild form of , well I'd call it pure genius!!! But I'm biased of course!

Awesome awesome artist this man!

And then he is throwing the guitar at the end of the vid there...
"I drew life from it's string, it died with a last dive through the air..." Or something!

Oh dude! I had not seen that performance before!! That really was something!!  :thumb:

Well I might as well link to a youtube vid myself then.
This is Ivor Kleive and Knut Reiersrud playing :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eB9OazhIVKA&feature=related

This style is like more on the Album Blå Koral, or blue choral if you like. Then there is the Album Himmelskip also with
a style that also includes then church organ.

OK. let's go off topic here and link to a almost smiliar song but with a very
different setting. How about a two blondes and a Hardanger fiddle:
This is like the folk music would sound like if sung, say more on par with tradition: Fiddle and voice
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QSEUcIBCbLA&feature=related

And here is one with just fiddles: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d50I4Q3OK1Q&feature=related

Nathanm, yes to Dead can Dance, one of the greatest groups of the last twenty years IMO. I've got all their studio stuff and have just become aware of their deep live discography produced over the years. I recently bought their "Selections from the North American tour" cd they sell from their website. Fabulous sound quality and it's nice to hear alternative versions of their songs in a live setting. I wish I'd jumped on the live Chicago boxed lp set while it was still available.

Start with "Into the Labyrinth." It's a longtime audiophile favorite.
As to the question, XTC is a group I've collected.

After "Into the Labyrinth", go get "Spiritchaser." Those two provide a nice sampling of their sounds.

Bela Fleck with, or without, the Flecktones. Bela can and does play just about anything from Classical to Bluegrass and way into Rock. Acoustic to Amplified he's got it covered.
He's a "great" musician, in the literal sense of the word.

Best Regards,
TerryO

A great band.  They do have one early album I don't much care for but most of their stuff is stellar.  Skylarking, oddly enough, is an album that I didn't care for right away.  But I ripped it to my PC and it grew on me over time.  Now I love it and can't imagine why I wasn't blown away immediately by it. :thumb:

That a tough one.  I'm at work now so I cant browse my library, but a few that come to mind.

Eva Cassidy-Sadly, she passed away at the young age of 33 due to cancer back in 1996.  Her rendition of Fields of Gold, Over the Rainbow, Imagine, What a Wonderul World, Autumn Leaves, and so many more are simply beautiful.  http://www.evacassidy.org/eva/eva.shtml

Sara K.-I enjoy most of her music and love her voice.  http://www.sarak.com/home.html

Patricia Barber-This one is interesting to me because I don't really care for her voice on many of her songs, but her music and the musicians are simply brilliant.  I saw her live once in Ann Arbor MI, and it was one of the greatest listening pleasures I've had, absolutly fantastic.  http://www.patriciabarber.com/

Gotta agree with you here, Yooper. I'm not a big "female jazz vocal" fan, don't give a hoot about Norah or Diana (though they've both done some interesting things). But Patricia's "Mythologies" is a masterpiece (imo, of course).
