Nick, I know where you can get a NOS Tung Sol 5U4GB if you need one. I picked one up for $22

I almost fell on the floor laughing  when I saw who it was that outbid me by 50 cents in the last few seconds.

You're correct in that there are plenty of interesting tubes to be found at decent prices.  Dave just turned me onto a couple of great sources for NOS tubes.

Now, just stay away from my bids on eBay... :icon_twisted:

Great review Danny.  What tubes have you rolled with it so far?  Have you tried the DR's yet?   To me the tube rolling capability of the Truth TP is another win (now it's 5:0)

A very informative review. Thanks Danny.

I haven't heard the Transporter yet but given what I've experienced with the Truth Sony 9100 and the LS 36.5 - and given what Ted, Dave, Frank and others have reported -  rolling a NOS rectifier in the TP will bring it to a whole other level.  :thumb:

Hey Ted, congratulations on your 1500th post!

Hi Ted,

tube rolling... man, haven't even begun to play around with that... :)

no doubt, there's lots and lots left to discover with Truth Transporter!

Danny,
Nice Review!
Did you try running the TP direct to your Threshold amp using the TP bulit in volume control?
A report on that would be interesting too!

Phil,

This TS 5U4G / VT244 is reported to be perhaps one the best 5U4's ever produced. It has the top getter where most TS have a bottom getter.

I have not been following this 5U4 variant so I don't know if $150 is a fair price but it is supposed to be pretty special rectifier. I have no affiliation with the seller.

Haven't done yet -

I do at times run the LessLoss DAC this way - mine has the shunt regulated volume pot on it which allows me to properly run the unit... improvements are there, though not quite as dramatic... my pre-amp is very transparent...

I suspect that Truth TP should work w/o problems directly into the Threshold, although you would be losing resolution at low listening levels... due to the implementation of the volume control.

Something to look into... maybe warranting  a follow-up of some sort...

cheers,

Danny

I know that myself and DoubleUgly run our Modwright Transporter's directly into our amps, in my case, CIA D200's and in DU's case, a Spectron Musician III SE.  I got some Ultimate Attenuators from Ric at EVS audio to set the overall loudness level and use the TP volume control to tweak it little bit up or down.  It works great for me.

Yeah, I downloaded Rebecca Pidgeon's Spanish Harlem.  It's always been one of my demos in redbook.  Now in 24/96 it's even more real than before.  Wow.

I found this user review on another site.
The writer has had about every CDP available in his position at sometime or other, so he knows his way around digital reproduction equipment.  A question was asked on a comparison between Ayre and the Transporter, as this type of question often crops up I thought it would be of interest to post his reply:

I have both the transporter stock, Modwright transporter, Ayre C5XE and the Marantz SA7s1. I can send a picture of all of them together if you email me.

Stock transporter is good for the money and pretty close to the Ayre. The key to the transporter is how you store the file. You have to be very careful with the ripper and itunes. I store them uncompressed and it does make a difference.

To say the DAC's in the Ayre are much better than the transporter is not true. It's all in the output section. Why do you think you never see modded Ayre? It's because they did such a great job on the output section there is nothing more you can do to it. Can't say the same thing about the Esoteric players. If you ever heard the difference between the Modwright and the stock unit you would shake your head. Just by changing the output section transformed that to reference status, the two sound nothing alike.

The Marantz is very good and a different flavor over the Ayre. I would say it is between the Esoteric and the Ayre. I had the Esoteric X-01 Limted and didn't like it at all. I would chose all of the players above over the Esoteric. To relaxed and soft for me.

The Ayre C5 is better in every way of the C7.

The Modwright Transporter is KING. I sold my Emm Labs SE DAC and transport for the Modwright. It is that good...

I have been fighting some group loop issue for the last few weeks. It has been driving pretty crazy actually  :duh: Tonight I was swapping some power cables around on my TP and I noticed that when I had no power going to the TP that, while it didnt eliminate the hum from my system, it certainly reduced it. I am curious if anyone else has experienced any hum in their system? and what the cause could be?

David:

I had a hum problem a few months ago.  While I am not positive it seemed to be caused by some of my cables touching or being to close to the Direct TV Signal Cable.

I hope you are able to find the issue because it is a real pain in the ear!

David, I had a hum problem a few years ago with a HT setup that had a Rotel 1098 processor, Rotel 5 channel amp and SVS sub - I finished up using cheater plugs as a temporary measure and buying gadgets that claimed to help but never did.  I spent forever moving equipment to different outlets, which made some improvements but never really solved the issue.  When I got rid of the Rotel amp and introduced an Anthem P5 (great 5 channel amp) it fixed the problem.  At the time a number of users on the Rotel forum experienced similar problems, based on this my theory is that some equipment and equipment combination's could be more susceptible to ground loop issues?  I've never had the problem again.

The only suggestion I can make is to dismantle everything and introduce components one by one in order to eliminate the culprit.

Thanks guys  :thumb: Hums are certainly a major pain. I have ripped everything apart and re-built it one by one multiple times over the last few weeks. There are a few things going on and I dont need to go into all of it, but I have identified my Transporter as one of the sources of the hum. As soon as power is put to it there is a noticeable increase in hum. I wonder what would cause it?
