I think this sort of question consistently arises because many people are unaware of how closely the perceived value a product is tied to the asking price of the product. Many people are afraid or at least reluctant to pay less for something especially if they can afford to spend more. The other factor influencing what you will be willing pay for a product is how it looks. Frequently the external cosmetics of a piece of equipment or a loudspeaker can dominate the cost equation and contribute to more than half the manufacturing cost of the piece. People will always pay more for something if they think can see a compelling reason to do so. It's hard to blame the industry for attempting to give these people a reason to part with more money regardless of how spurious that reason may be. People still still respond to the argument, if it cost more it has to be better and if you spend enough money you can buy the very best thing possible to own.
I personally think that spending more money in this hobby does not guarantee a better sounding outcome nor does it insure better sounding engineering and design. To put it another way spending more money does not always buy you the services of a more talented designer.

I think this is an interesting thread (thanks 2bigears!) for any number of reasons...and it leads to a range of questions that I think deserve discussion:
-what would lead a person to spend $30k on an amplifier? Well, because he can (he has the money), because he thinks he deserves it (after all, he deserves the best of everything), and/or because doing so makes him happier (ostentatious displays make him feel better about himself and his station in life).
-what would lead a manufacturer to market a $30k amplifier? Well, because he knows someone will buy it (see above).

Okay...discuss.

when you talk speakers that's a whole different ball game.when you talk amps,10 to 15 large should get you to the top.i am going the other way in price these days on amps.i will battle a 10k [7 years ago] amp to a new 4k dollar amp.i am of course hoping for good results.technology marches on.

You know I have alittle less that $2800 in my Odyssey Mono SE's, and I've heard those big Krells and a few other gold plated amps over the last 18 months. The Odysseys sound better, or at least as good in most cases. Now you take the price difference, and divide the cost of a case of beer into it, man that's a lot of beer! I love to know just what their profit margins are.

No Pat, I'm not saying it doesn't make any sense, just that it's circular in nature, there is no right answer and I for one don't see how it serves any purpose as well as it almost always devolves into subtle and overt insults being tossed around with a healthy dose of sarcasm.....BUT, some clearly do see value in it and that's what this place is for...in fact I withdraw my commentary altogether....enjoy the discussion and apologies....I'm having a grumpy day....

I have Kraft 400 mono's that I bought from Klaus...they retailed for $36K. They are a discontinued item, but they will still sell them on special order.

Ask Klaus how they sound compared to the Mono's.

My best guess is that IF Klaus was allowed to build them, they would come in at around $12,000, just using the Stratos percent cost savings when going from German building, to USA building....

This is an excellent thought. The talented designer and engineer could not always afford to produce what he designed there are only rich people could jump into his business and said I rescue you and your design. But in the real life they take advantage of the designer to expand their pockets. This is already happened to a big foreign audio brand name. I am not talking about "stolen idea and design" of some already being audio designers.

The dealer makes $12,000 on a $30,000 sale. That's a lot of beer too. In fact, the dealer makes more than the manufacturer on most deals.
And in many cases, the dealer doesn't have anything invested. He just places the order and waits for the gear to arrive.

I think it is just relative, as in how wealthy an individual is as well as how high of a value he places on said item. A friend of mine thinks I am flat out crazy for how much I am willing to spend on an amp or a set of speakers, he just doesn't understand it. On the other hand he rides bicycles...ALOT. He rides with Lance here in Austin. Recently he bought a bike and it cost $5000 and that is without any frickin wheels or a seat!!

It is no doubt, one cool looking bike, super light, all carbon fiber etc. but it doesn't come with a seat or any frickin wheels!! I just couldn't help but point this out to him, now he understands. Anyway, I just feel it's how much value a person places on that item. Someone who owns those amps most likely feels they are a great value and offer performance above and beyond what say a Mcintosh MC402 or Classe CA-300 will, they probably feel they got their monies worth. $30K to them is like $3000 to me and so on. Well that's just IMHO anyway......

I know some people bought a so-called "high-end dragon fish" for $6K (about 6 inches) and in a couple months they double the price for 10-12 inches growing fish for someone who is interested.

I can only conclude that you have never been in business from a comment like that. Set up a storefront, hire a few salesman, and then come back in a year or two, and tell us your thoughts then....
