Fiuczynski (fuze) plays on every cut of Hiromi's Time Control album.  The album, in general, is "hairier" than Hiromi's others.  I don't agree at all that it is "no comparison."  It is certainly different.  Every album of hers has been completely different, thus far.  I appreciate her composition skills most of all, particularly on her last two albums, Spiral and Time Control.  A good combination of technique and those other intangibles that make music accessible.  To me, her compositions are becoming more organic, album by album, in a way that the greats of the past did not really attempt.  They had very different goals and a much more straightforward approach.  Time Control really does wonderful things with time that any fan of counting music should enjoy.  Unlike many prog bands or some of the old fusion greats, I never feel that she plays technical "junk" for its own sake.  Spiral is my favorite piano trio album, it certainly doesn't sound like any other piano trio album I know of.  I think it will be a classic.  I enjoy how she can compose something very technical, but never lose sight of accessibility.  However, so far, she has taken each album in a completely different direction, and so I look forward to whatever she will put out, next, having no idea what it will be.  But I expect a lot.

I couldn't agree more,, Spiral is very "user friendly",,,, accessable I guess is the correct analogy. One day, I'll give Time Control a listen. I'm a sucker for a good piano anyways.  I've got 7 George Duke albums. I don't believe anyone's brought up the big man yet. For piano jazz instrumentals, they don't come any better than George Duke.  :thumb:

George Duke is great, as is Bill Bruford.  Although, I can't really dig most of Weather Report, either.  Some of it really smokes, for me, though.

The brilliance of Spiral is that although it is "user friendly," she's got TONS of motifs running throughout all of the pieces, in particular her piano trio suite.  I've wanted to analyze the forms she used in her suite and also in the Time Control album for a long while, but I just don't have the dedication or time.  Her plays on rhythms are so ingenious, yet you don't have to catch them to dig the music.

Headroo, Satfrat, and last but not least, the guy who opened this inquiry, Bigfish . . I got a challenge for you.  I wanna tell you about a monumental album not so much "fusion" as much as highly original jazz.  It's four white guys playing with the drive of the most passionate jazz players with a synergy that has to be heard to be believed.  And you can't listen to little pieces on Amazon and begin to get it.  It's almost a four part suite the compositions flow together so well.  It was written for this group by the group leader and nobody goes to the bathroom.  This is collective high energy with purpose and direction and it's absolutely beautiful work.  Five stars, indeed.

Three Quartets by Chick Corea (piano) with Michael Brecker (tenor) in his finest hour*, Eddie Gomez (bass), and Steve Gadd (drums) who you may remember from Aja.  It's been re-released (CD only) with some other things on it featuring the same band members, I believe.  As it was originally released it was just the three quartet compositions which filled out the album and is what I want you to hear.

It's a perfectly acceptable recording.  I would have placed Brecker more in the front particularly in the tribute to Coltrane section- I think you can see why when you hear this.  This is brilliant for it's individual, collective, and compositional power and grace.

*Brecker's contribution on the set exceeds his playing for which he won a Grammy.  You heard it here.

Sounds like a highly recommended listen to me. Hopefully I'll run across this album. I've got a number of Chick Corea & Michael Brecker albums but not Three Quartets. It's on my "must have" list now,,, thanks for the heads up! 8)

Even the samples sound crazy good, so I'll be getting this album asap.  Thanks for the recommendation.  Chick Corea duets with Hiromi in concert once in a while, btw.  Actually, she's playing with Chick again at the Blue Note 9/24-9/26.

and some more live cuts (long concert): http://stage6.divx.com/user/Algoban/video/1560200/Hiromi-Uehara---Live-at-Shinagawa-Aqua-Stadium

more available on stage6.  Keep in mind that, for instance, the first piece they play in the Shinagawa concert Hiromi composed and released on CD with Telarc before she graduated from college.

Flim & The BB's. Jazz/pop with a sense of humor. Very well recorded, dynamic and melodic.

Metro. No sax, kind of like Jeff Lorber's Fusion. Hard to find and pricey but very good.

Dave Weckl's solo stuff. Awesome drumming, good reed work, early stuff is quite melodic.

Alain Caron / Uzeb.

Pierre Morelan's Gong.

Tribal Tech. Power trio fusion (guitar/bass/drums).

Chick Corea Electric Band (Chick, Weckl, Marienthal, Gambale, Pattitucci).

Just got this blownout inventive (as usual) album from Ellis Marsalis from 1993, Whistle Stop. Even tho the horns take over on some tracks, Ellis's piano has it's moments of tricked out chords. A very enjoyable album of inventive jazz indeed from the ole' man.

Staying along the lines of fusion, try giving Jona Hellborg w/Shawn Lane a listen. There's many to choose from, Time is The Enemy & Persona are a couple of my favorites. Just some good heady music.  8)

Satfrat, anybody . . I have been listening to Rice radio (the college FM station at Rice University in Houston) this evening and heard some world music that sounds like music of the world in that is sounded like jazz and ethnic folk and new wave all at once.  There was this incredible percussive playing using hit and plucked instruments that wove a tapestry of energy and sound that grabbed my mojo and wouldn't let up.  Good God Almighty it was good!  Also, there was a female vocal thread weaving thru it like a snake thru the reeds (I got a license).  This was some mesmerizing stuff and if it was that infectious to me .  .  .  well, I'm buying this rat now.  It is a compilation disc called Gatherings featuring a bunch of artists from Bali to East Africa from what I could read on Amazon.  I only heard one track by Seckou and Ramata, the one I futilely tried to describe, and that was enough for me to pluck down the dough.

If anybody knows of a world music site where a fellow might get a sample of this genre, please reply.  I think I'll ease over to LYCOS and see what I can find.  Really exciting, driving music.

Speaking of European jazz.............saw these guys about a month ago in a fantastic little theater.

Really enjoyed it, energetic, innovative and they were having fun which always makes the music more enjoyable I think. Highly recommended if you like the European jazz sound.  I agree, there seems to be more innovation coming out of Eurpoe on the jazz front these days.
