That's right. I'll also go check this myself. I've got enough modded Squeezeboxes around the house that it will be possible to compare floating shield versions to locally grounded versions.

Brad/Guys,....I got your emails/pm's, I am not ignoring you. I was just coming up with estimates for what shipping would be in a padded envelope via USPS (I am guessing $.45-50 for envelope bought in bulk, $1-$1.50 postage 1st class).

I whipped up a quick'n'dirty spreadsheet that lists everyone's total with or without paypal and was going to mass email it out to people. I am just trying to firm up a couple of estimates so I am not overestimating costs to individuals, nor am I nickel and diming myself.

Does anyone know paypal's exact pricing structure better than 3 or 3.5% flat. I think they do something strange that makes small payments different than larger payments, which is why I ask.

I'll send out the mass email today. Then you guys will have everything you need to know.

Hi josh,

I am builder brad - the forum has locked my account since I changed my e-mail address - and now I cannot get back in as it is not sending me the confirmation e-mail that I need to re-activate my account. Does anyone know how I can re-set my account as this is a real pain I even had to set up a new e-mail account for the activation e-mail for this account as the system said that my e-mail was already registered !!.

OK - I've done the comparison. I had one SB3 with the shield connected to SB3 ground and another SB3 with the shield floated.

And the winner is - float the shield. I find that the soundstage seems a bit more natural this way.

I didn't try the options that Mauimods suggested - tying the SB3 groundplane to "real" ground or isolating the transformer shield with a ferrite bead.

I'd be curious to hear from Tan or F100 if they try the floating shield option.

Right now, I'm using Mauimod's suggestion by tying pin #5,6 & 7 to the ground and the result sounds more dynamic with much less noise. I'll try your floating shield option on another SB3 when I receive a new batch of transformers from Josh.

Can't wait to get the trannies.

I guess I'll start modding the SB2 first and then my DAC.

I have just replaced my DAC with an older EAD DSP-7000 MKIII. I got hooked on the EAD sound, so to speak!

The EAD has what they call a "digital flywheel" to reduce jitter. So, the benefits of the transformer on this circuit may not be as dramatic...

If this is a ticket of different version of SC947-02 mod I will try in my other SB3. Have you tried it in your DAC too? I am using pins 5,6 and 7 to real ground in both SB3 and DAC and my music is not only natural but also dynamic. What do you think?

I don't have the 947-02 transformers - I'm using the older 916 transformers. The two units that I compared had 1)floating shield vs. 2)shield hooked to the local ground. I didn't try hooking the shield to a remote ground like you did.

But I definitely found that the floating shield was musical. I didn't hear much difference in dynamics - as I mentioned in the earlier message the biggest difference was a bigger soundstage. The floating shield version seemed to be better at making the speakers disappear.

Your results confirm the negative effects of SB's noisy ground plane.

All those who just got their sc947-02s, should follow Anthony(mauimods.com)'s advise and connect the shields to a clean external ground.

Having sc947-02s on the TX end(SB3) and RX end(your DAC) like Tan has done will give you the best digital signal path.

When you get the noise out of the way, the music flows.

I did three experiments:
1. Both SB3 and DAC have the same installation pins 5,6 and 7 to ground. This sound more musical, details and extended smooth soundstage and dynamic. Listening all yesterday evening. Speakers disappear.Volume at 9 o'clock.
2. Both SB3 and DAC have the same pin 5 to ground/ pins 6 and 7 shielded are floating: this sound weak in my system and loose dynamic (bass almost disappeared). When I turned up volume to 10 o'clock I noticed noise.
3. SB3 has pins 5,6 and 7 to ground again and DAC has pin 5 to ground: Music has more dynamic but still little noise. Musical and details are there but not as number 1. Sound is little firmer than number 1. Bass is very defined. Speakers are not disappeared but sound extanded to the back.

I personally choose 3 more than 1 and use all same audio components.
