Any thoughts or commments on Amy Winehouse?
« on: 11 Mar 2007, 05:05 pm »
I am thinking of picking up her cd's this week, but I wanted to see if people thought she was as good as her reviews state first.

Thanks,

George

Hip....jazzy....not a big vocal range, but some good tunes.
A good read here......

IMO.....Similar vocal style to Fiona Apple...but jazzy...well recorded.

Very bad press for Amy Winehouse in this article: http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20071115/wl_uk_afp/entertainmentbritainmusicpeoplewinehouse

Sounds like she was absolutely hammered while on stage!

I guess she really does need to go to rehab.  Go, go, go!

More enjoyable to me than Joss Stone but she ain't no Fiona Apple (who is much underappreciated IMO) her writing is some of the best I've heard from any pop artist.  Listen to her stories, structures etc... and one might be amazed at the content this young women can put to music.  amy would be somewhere in between I guess but her music has evident anti-social commercial appeal, really catchy tunes.  Glad I bought it.

My only issue with Amy is she always seems out of it, thus I have no interest in catching any live performances etc...

Have you seen Fiona live?  I really like Fiona Apple, but after seeing her live I'm quite certain she's a bit off the deep end.

I really like her album, George.  Too bad she seems like such an accident waiting to happen now.

Never had the chance...
Butl if you mean acting quirky or something...maybe a little angry (we know she's a bit angry), that's fine...to many boring people in the world.  But hopefully not showing up drunk or stone and forgetting lyrics and stumbling around and just acting like you don't give a damn is another matter altogether.

Back To Black is terrific . The stylings are on the retro side but the lyrics are modern ... and , unfortunately , she seems to live them .

I expected the angst and quirkiness (although "Get Him Back" was scary angry).  I didn't expect the occasional aimless wandering around the stage mid-song, sitting down on the floor behind the piano for a couple of minutes while the band stretched the song, or the mid-song rambling while away from the mic (I could never hear what she was saying despite being 20' from the stage, but it was between lyrics so I don't think it was singing).

Don't get me wrong, it was a very good concert overall, but there were some moments when people in the audience look at each other and shrugged.

I really like her music....but given her predisposition to copious drugs and alcohol....I can't help but think of the word ...inevitable....when it comes to serious issues with her well-being....

I really like her album but I HATE her persona.  I just ignore all the hoopla and focus on the music.

Ditto, if just the music is evaluated it's a good disc.  Listened to it again last night...really catchy songs, good hooks, good mood and vibe for each song.  As mentioned a wonderful blend of retro-sound with modern and personal perspective.  Her authenticity comes through in the music 100% and is what instantly connected me to her, especially over an artist like Joss Stone who while nice sounding, to me comes off as extremely commercial and contrived by comparision.

In my opinion The Detroit Cobras do the same thing, but better.  They've also been around for over 10 years.

Check them out here:

Winehouse's backing band, Sharon Jones and the Daptones, are pretty hot though.

I couldn't have said it better than Sts and launche!

Hicks,
I've never heard of the Detroit Cobras but like what I hear. I would like to buy one of their cd's, any pointers?

Thanks,
John

I haven't heard them all, but this one is an excellent collection of fresh takes on soul standards:
