Wait a minute.  We may be talking about two different things.  Do the files you rip end up as flacs in your music directory?

Look in the actual music folders and see what the real file extension is.    If you scroll far enough in the SB do you see the FLAC files also?

A couple of things could be happening. First are you copying the files from the this path?

Action->Copy Selected Tracks->Compressed.. Shift+5

When you look at the files on you hard drive do they have .flac extension?

Second, did you rescan your file with slimserver?

Nope.  Actually, there is no file extention listed at all in my harddrive.  In Slimserver, they are listed as WAV, even after I rescanned.

Thanks,
Randy

OK.  Then the FLAC encoder isn't getting launched properly or it's putting the FLACs in a different directory structure somewhere. Are you getting the DOS popup window showing the FLAC encoding?  I suspect not.

For starters, can you manually launch FLAC against the WAV files and get it to work?  If so, then can you see them in SlimServer?

Look again, but this time right click on the file and choose "properties".  The window that pops up will tell you what the file extension is.  Let us know what it says.

I'm not sure what you mean by "manually launching FLAC against the WAV files.

I had done this before and the "Type of file" just says Windows Audio.  No file extension is listed anywhere.

Go to a DOS command line session and manually launch FLAC.exe with the appropriate parameters - one of which is to point to where the .wav files are.  If this works successfully, then at least we know that part is functional and it's how it's getting called that's the issue.  Just trying to work through this one step at a time and find out what is and isn't working.

Try just using:

FLAC input_file_path and file name

That should use the same filename for the output and add the flac extension and put it in the same place the wave file is.  I could be wrong on that and it MAY put it where the flac.exe file is.

It doesn't work.  I am thinking of just deleting the flac folder and starting over and download it again.

Yup.  Uninstall it and start over.

I think maybe you had something different than what we thought you did.

Use this link to download

http://www.legroom.net/modules.php?op=modload&name=Open_Source&file=index&page=software&app=autoflac

There is a different tool called FLAC Frontend and I think you probably had that.

rklein,

Sorry we haven't been able to help you yet.  This doesn't seem like it should be a big problem.  Just to re-cap...it seems like we've determined that you can rip the disk with EAC, but it is not being converted to flac.  If you got the set up right, which I think you have, then take a look at the bottom right hand side of the EAC screen.  There should be a drop-down window that reads something like "FLAC Compression."  Is that there?

I hope I'm not confusing matters further.

Please tell me if I'm wrong, but even if he had the flac frontend, wouldn't he still be able to utilize flac.exe?

Flacfrontend appears to be a different tool than the autoflac that most people use.  I don't know how it works so I was just steering him to something that is more standard to what most of us use so we can help him better.  I don't even know if flacfrontend HAS a flac.exe - but if it didn't, I'd expect an unkownn program error at the DOS prompt.  I suspect it's just a matter of different parms.

FlacFrontEnd appears to be just a GUI interface for manually doing FLAC conversion - don't know if it will plug to EAC or not.

Bryan:

Thanks for all of your help.  I will use this link to download flac again.

bprice2:

Thanks as well for all of your help.  In answer to your question... Flac (Compression) does appear in the drop down box.  Although, I ended up with FLAC Frontend, there is a flac.exe file in the folder as well as a Flac Frontend.exe file.

I probably need to leave this discussion as my wife has just about had it with me after spending hours upon hours the last five days getting the wireless network up, changing my wireless router from a D-Link 624S (utterly crappy router) to a Zyxel 550 Mimo, trying to get the frikking SB3 to talk to the Slimserver, etc,etc,etc...  I am almost there.  Thanks again.  I will report back after downloading flac again.

Thanks,
Randy

The only reason I ask is b/c I think Frontend is what I had downloaded, but I only utilize the flac.exe found within the frontend folder.  I'd copied and pasted flac.exe to the EAC folder...did the same with lame.exe.  If he did all that and has chosen the correct drop down from the compression menu in the bottom right of EAC, then chooses "Action", "Copy Selected Tracks", "Compressed" I don't know what else to do.  This one may be beyond me.

Yeah - I dunno either.  That's why I had him try just running the basic conversion from the command line to isolate it from any EAC setup issues, path issues, etc.  But, that didn't even work for him.

Hey:

Well, I re-downloaded Flac and made sure everything was configured correctly in EAC.  I re-ripped a CD.  It showed that it was using an external compressor (flac).  However, these audio tracks are showing up in my Music Folder as WAV and are being displayed as such on my SB3.  I am completely stumped by this and rather discouraged.  I don't give up easily, but I have spent WAY TOO MUCH TIME :evil:on this instead of enjoying listening to music.  Any other suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks,
rklein - Randy

Randy, please confirm the content of fields in the compression area of your EAC setup as per following....

In EAC, select EAC, then Compression Options, then the External Compression tab.
Fields should read like this ...

Use external program for compression: tick this.

Parameter Passing Scheme: select User Defined Encoder.

Use File Extension: type in .flac (ensure you insert the dot before flac).

Program, including path, used for compression: type in c:\program files\flac\flac.exe (use the Browse button here to ensure the correct path and select the flac.exe file).

Additional Command Line Options: -8 -V -T "artist=%a" -T "title=%t" -T "album=%g" -T "date=%y" -T "tracknumber=%n" -T "genre=%m" %s

Bit Rate: select 320 kbit/sec

Then tick the boxes for Check For External Program Return Code and High Quality.

Click on OK.

OK, now select EAC Options from the EAC main screen, then the Tools tab. Tick the box next to 'On extraction, start external compressors queued in the background'. Enter the value of 1. Ensure the box for 'Do Not open External compressor window' is NOT ticked. Tick the box for 'Submit drive features after detection'. Ensure the box for 'Activate Begginer mode, disable all advanced features' is NOT ticked.

Click on OK, then click on the Save button on the main EAC screen.

Close EAC, then restart EAC.

Now rip a CD using the MP3 button on the EAC main screen. Use one you haven't ripped before.

At the end of each ripped track, EAC should open a DOS box that will start compressing the ripped track with Flac. At the bottom of the EAC screen, it should say 'x compressions remaining'. You should not get any errors popping up if it compresses OK.

Once the CD is fully ripped and the compressions have completed (ie. it no longer says 'x compressions remaining' at the bottom of the EAC screen), use File Explorer to go to your Music Library folder and ensure that the tracks from the new CD are there. Select one, look at its properties to ensure that it is a Flac file.

If so, then rescan your library in SlimServer. Once that has fininshed, check to see if the SB3 reports the tracks as Flac files.

Let us know how you go and we'll work from there. Don't worry mate, we'll get you there.  :D
