I'll echo Jim's and Rollo's sentiments, if you ever find yourself in St Louis or the surrounding area, plan a visit.    If I can't convince you on the two formats and their differences, I'll definitely get you drunk enough that you'd swear you were at a live event with both.

Of course, if you find yourself in the unfortunate position of being in Mississippi, I expect you to let me know.  I'll listen to music while you and Kandy (my wife) argue about who gets control of the kitchen.

I would agree with rajacat on this one TCG, you continue to bang away at the keys with comments like "CD's just don't make music". After 14 pages of posts with people getting hot under the collar, it would be nice to know that after all these years hear on AC, that you are at least perceptive enough to know that that is going to irk people.

It's becoming a bit of a drone. I'm sure you can get your opinion and personal tastes across without the supremely negative suggestiveness.

I agree . How many derogatory remarks are you going to make about cd playback ? We get the point already and realize it's just your opinion  but there are many fans of digital here too .

Okay guys - time out, please, for a second to review.

The problem with these long posts are that they are too long to read everything beforehand, and that comments are made only on the most recent remarks.

I'm not saying that all CD's are and sound exactly the same, of course, they don't.  What I am stating is that to spend a ton of dough on a CD system might not bring to better music...as CD is inherently non-musical (to me, I might add, you surely can have a different opinion than I do).  If you disagree, that's okay/great, please enjoy your system as I will my $150.00 system.  I've added enough tubes not to it so that I can barely make out that it's CD  (try to have a sense of humor here, hard core CD lovers  ).

After I posted about TT's 'sameness', I realized I'm probably far less accurate with that sentiment.  Most of them are musical, but because they are comprised of so many more mechanical bits and pieces I think they'd have a wider variety of quality. That there is a big part of the experience many have had with vinyl...it is so 'tweeky' it outlasts even the most patient.

fyi, I've played my CDP all day today (no vinyl) and it was pleasant.  But, not notably less pleasant than when I had uber-rig here.  If I had a bigger room, bigger/more capable speakers, more power and or lots of acoustic treatments - maybe that would not be the case.  For $1300.00 the new buyer is thrilled with it now - and I'm equally thrilled that he is as he is getting a lot more out of it than I could coax from it with my more limited set-up. He's also using the Sony's very good video capabilities so he is surely enjoying it more thoroughly than I.

So there, does that clear anything up at all?  Does it get me outta' ANY hot water with this outta' control topic?

I love the food and good times offered.....my sister-in-law lives in Atlanta area, and I've been to Birmingham a few times calling on Hibbett Sports (I've been to 41 states thus far, but never to Mississippi).  Scott, it's been awhile since I've been to St. Louis...my last appt with Bass Pro (4 hour drive south) was a three years ago.  Rollo, I'm a NY'er by birth with family and friends all over LI and Northern NJ. 

So, maybe Pipedreams and killer Italian someday ?

I don't have time to go back and read all the posts in this thread, so if my comments here are retreading old ground, forgive me...
Back in 1998 or so I was in the market for a new CD player. I had two on hand for a weekend experiment...an Audio Alchemy DDS III (which was designed as a transport, but had some basic sony DAC that would let you use it as a stand-alone player) and a Denon whatever-the-flavor-of the month model was at that time. I also had a passive pream that had more than one input, so I hooked both CD players to the pre, using identical 1m lengths of Audioquest ICs. I also had two copies of the same CD (Emmylou Harris "Wrecking Ball"), so I could listen to the same track, at roughly the same point in the song, and switch back and forth between both CD players.
Did I hear a difference?  Uh, sorta...it was hard to put my finger on anything overt at first, and the differences that I thought I heard were, shall we say, subtle.
After a while I grew bored so was in another room of the house while the music continued to play. Suddenly I heard something that was decidely non-musical, or, for lack of a better way to describe it, very digital sounding...it was someone playing a triangle or a harpsichord or something, but from the other room it sounded downright nasty. I went to see what CD player was playing...it was the Denon. I then switched to the Alchemy, went in the other room, and the nastiness was gone. Switched back to the Denon, nastiness was there. Back the AA...nastiness gone.
So, what did I learn? Couple things...first, CD players do sound different. Second, the Alchemy with the cheap Sony DAC sounded more musical than the $550 Denon.
Fascinating...kinda.

What about long (winded) replies sheesh... How about this recap: Some people like digital, some people like vinyl, SOME like both. We all like music and in the end can spend our dough any way we want to. Some people like chicken. Others fish. Some people like BOTH chicken and fish. Some people like certain kinds of fish or chicken better, but both like food and enjoy eating.
