VMPS Flying WING

The latest offering in the VMPS line is a complete departure from anything Brian Cheney has done in the past.

Introducing the RM V60 or VMPS "Flying Wing".

This striking speaker masquerading as art, forms a giant "V " sweeping from a 7" wide front to a 22" width in the rear, and rises to a full 68" in height, and 19" depth (including base)

The RM V60 is composed of two sections.  The V, which includes the 6 Neopanel Midrange Drivers and single Tweeter, and the Base which houses 3 - 6.5" megawoofers in an acoustic suspension system.

Driver Compliment:

HF driver = New 6" Aurum Cantus G3 tweeter
MR Drivers = 6 VMPS Neopanels
Bass Drivers = 3 - 6.5" Megawoofers (single firing forward and one each side-firing left and right)

THE Flying WING

The WING is the heart of the RM V60

By folding back the front baffle into a flying wing, it becomes 7" wide in the front (which greatly reduces edge diffraction path lengths) but is acoustically 42" wide, enough to prevent dipole effect cancellation at crossover and above.

The Neopanel midrange drivers are arranged vertically, separated three and three, above and below the New 6" Aurum Cantus Tweeter.  This array will be fronted by the new CDWG (Constant Directivity Wave Guide)

Following in the footsteps of adjustability of most all previous VMPS designs, the RM V60 will have additional capabilities seldom seen.  In addition to the ability to adjust the tweeter and midrange levels via the L-pads, we have something entirely new.

Full Dipole, Partial Dipole, or Sealed Rear

There is a user adjustable bass damper wedge of foam behind the panels allowing for full dipole, partial dipole or sealed rear.

The adjustable rear damper allows sealed back, dipole or partial dipole operation depending on the listening environment (damped, partially damped, or undamped).

Normally an open baffle speaker design has to be wider than the cutoff frequency.  For 300Hz that means about 4 feet in width.  The New VMPS Folded Wing Design with adjustable damper obviates this and gives a much nicer look, as well as function.  The Open Back means no reflection back into the drivers.

 Mid Bass Base Pedestal

The WING will rest on top of the Mid Bass Base Pedestal.

The RM  V60 is a new ribbon/dynamic hybrid with an open baffle configuration from 280Hz on up.  But from 280Hz down to 70Hz we have an acoustic suspension midbass pedestal.  This Pedestal has one front firing 6.5" megawoofer, and two same side firing out of the left and right side panels.

Weight of each wing is 150lb, and the Pedestal Base with 3x 6.5" woofers 100 lbs, with total weight 250 lbs each side.

LOW BASS

Introduction of such an incredible speaker warranted a re-design of the famous VMPS LARGER subwoofer, (VSS) as well as a NEW Bass Array SUBWOOFER System (VLA).  The VLA includes a brand new design in the 15" active Driver, and restructuring the Sub's cabinet to have 2" baffles and sidewalls.  Using outboard PR based SUBWOOFER lowbass takes the most destructive modulations from surface-born LF waves out of the mid/treble enclosure.

VSS

This new design is so Solid that we call it the VSS (Very Solid SUB).  This is available in both passive and powered (1000w) versions, and has a new 15" Megawoofer, and 15" Passive Radiator.  This sub is also available in matching veneers to the mains.  Priced between $1650 for veneers and $1850 for Piano Black

VLA

Bass option II comes in a new 6ft tall powered woofer column we call the VLA (or Very Large Array) with four active 12" megawoofers, and one 12" Passive Radiator.  The on the side we have one side-firing 15" Passive Radiator.  It is very heavy, over 300 lbs, is standard with 1000w amp/crossover, and is priced at $4960ea.  Use one or two.

The usual cap and wiring upgrades will be offered.

More info and pictures later today.

HF driver = New 6" Arum Cantus G3 tweeter

What is the motivation for a more powerful tweeter? Is the X over frequency between midrange and tweeter lowered?

Looks like a very interesting design. Coincendently, I have transformed two weeks ago one of my 626R into an  "Open Back" box (U shape open box) for both midrange and woofer.

Looking forward for the pictures.

The Aurem Cantus G 3 at 100 dB sensitivity is a better match for the six mid panels and spreads much more treble energy into the room, making CD equalization easier.

Besides, it's a very expensive tweeter (over $300 retail), and audiophiles like expensive drivers.

Thanks Brian.

I hope the tweeter will be at ear level bc its vertical dispersion is more limited than the previous HET/FST.

Note that this tweeter has about  a 2 times higher moving mass when compared to the HET/FST. But this should not decrease performance. Its speed and frequency extension should be the same as the FST: the aluminium foil thickness  is the same (10 microns) and there is two times more magnets to drive the two times larger surface. Horizontal dispersion should be  similar as well (8.5 mm foil width).

Tweeter is at ear level.  The CDWG increases vertical treble dispersion to the full length of the slot, however.

Flattening the ceiling mode...
One of the best features (I implemented & posted about it a few years ago) is the ability to tune out the most common environmental bass modes caused by the ceiling (usually around 70 Hz).  The three 6.5" midbass are in a sealed enclosure for quicker transients, greater power handling, & a more natural, musical performance.

Now the free lunch: The midbass cutoff is an estimated 75 Hz.  Tuning out the ceiling mode is as simple as setting the sub's active low-pass pole at a frequency below the mode.  Wahla!  Ceiling mode & midbass hump replaced by smooth bass performance!

BTW, all three 6.5" drivers are 8-Ohm.  The two angled side-firing 6.5s are wired series 16-Ohm, then paralleled w/ the front-firing 6.5 for 7-Ohms total.  Power distribution among the three 6.5s is: Front-firing gets X, angled 6.5s get 1/2 X each.  The two angled 6.5s act as fill-in for the primary front-firing 6.5".  This would appear to minimize interference effects at higher frequencies (xo pole 280 Hz).

What's the highest resolution pictures I can post here?  We will take pictures tonight.  I'm bringing my camera software to Brian's.  The plan is to get the pics onto his computer (don't know about software compatibility) & posted before I leave his house.

I couldn't keep Paul in suspense any longer (I know he was up all night   waiting to see something)

Some may not know it, but Paul is our first RM v60 customer and will get the first assembled pair when they arrive (Yes we are taking preorders)

So I sent him a couple photos (not ready for prime time) of the raw speaker frames/cabinets/oxo before they left China.

Maybe he'll comment.

I'd be half way tempted to sit behind them since they look so good from the backside too.  (Reminds me of my ex-girlfriend aa)
