Cleaning MLS cabinets
« on: 14 Feb 2006, 02:27 am »
Now that all of the surgeries on the 626r's is complete, what is the reccomended way to clean the high gloss MLS cabinets without scratching them, etc.  I have read that just soap and water is the best way, but I wanted to be certain before starting.

Thanks!

I've used a furniture wax in the past to try clean up the finish on a non-MLS cabinet.  Don't know the brand though because a custom cabinet shop gave it to me au gratis.  I believe Brian has recommended a good car wax in the past.  Not sure I'd take soap and water to any speaker cabinet, but I'm not as familiar with the finish of the MLS cabinets.  Maybe a clean, damp cotton cloth instead?

I've always used guitar polish and cloth diapers to polish my guitars. The finish is a little different but not terribly so. The polish can be picked-up at any guitar or music store (i like the martin brand, personally), and you can get cloth diapers at walmart in the auto cleaning/polishing section.

Any good furniture polish should work fine. (even Pledge)

I wouldn't use furniture "oils" or such since the finish is not that pourous to the wood itself.

A good grade wax with maybe a little lemon oil (like I said Pledge) should clean and shine just fine.

Do not spray this in a way that gets it on the neo-panels or ribbon tweeter :nono:

I'm not at all surprised by the advise to use soap and water.  My family has worked in the auto repair business for over 4 generations.  They most commonly recommend a mild solution of dish soap and soft water when cleaning automotive finishes.  Typically these finishes are topped with a clear urethane (clear coat)  that tends to show fine line scratches easily, so proper cleaning is of upmost importance if you want to maintain a showroom shine.

OTOH, auto finishes are highly durable, and I can't say the MLS top coat is equally durable.  Your best bet is to ensure you use a very soft, lint free cloth.  Cotton diaper cloth is a good suggestion.

I'm adverse to most of the cleaning recommendations listed so far, on the notion that they involve adding a foreign substance to your finish.  These are far more likely to react with the finish in an adverse way, as compared to plain old soap and water.

Good luck.

By the way, plain old soap and water has kept these speakers looking like they did the day I brought them home 3 years ago.....

Good luck!

This stuff is expensive but worth it.

Stuff like Pledge according to people in the industry doesn't do anything any good.
