OPPO DVD player mods coming soon!
« on: 10 Jul 2005, 07:50 pm »
A few weeks ago I received an OPPO DV971H DVD player for evaluation.

Here is OPPO Digital's home page.

If you have not heard of this unit, here is a thread on AVSForum with most of the information on it.

It is a $200.00 retail, upscaling DVD player that delivers great video over DVI connections

Quite simply, I was blown away by it's picture quality right out of the box.

I was using a Pioneer DV-S755Ai that I had modded extensively. Rebuilt power supply.  Black Gates in place of the video coupling caps. Lot of dampening material on all surfaces. The OPPO had better picture quality using DVI than the Pioneer did using my expensive component cable with Slipstream Bybees and WBT NextGen connectors.

If it looked this good stock, I wondered what it would look like with some mods?

I contacted OPPO Digital and received great support from them. A lot of manufacturers would not think about working with a modder.

I have rebuilt the power supply and worked on the DVI output section. I am very pleased with the results.

OPPO has just released a new firmware upgrade that removes some of the problems earlier versions had with some displays and program material.

Right now I do have to say the picture quality of the modded, updated OPPO through DVI is the best I have ever seen from a DVD player. It is very close to the best HD material broadcast over Discovery HD or INHD. It is a LOT better than most of the HD material from the major networks.

I will be finishing up the mods this coming week. I will be adding an IEC connector for aftermarket power cables. I will also be rebuilding the audio section.

The OPPO will output audio through coax and optical digital connectors. It also has analog outputs. It will decode Dolby Digital and DTS internally. It will also play DVD-A. If you are going to use DVD only for a HT source, you could use the OPPO through it's analog output and an analog multi channel preamp for a very clean sound.

I hope to offer the power supply rebuild, DVI section, and digital audio section mods for about $500.00. There will be different levels of mods to choose from.

The analog audio section rebuild will cost a bit more. The stock unit uses 3) 4558 dual op-amps. I plan to replace them with 6) AD-825s.  There will be other extensive reworking of the analog section.

I plan to isolate the coaxial digital output with a pulse transformer. A Bybee Purifier can be added to the digital circuit that will work on both coaxial and optical outputs.

As you can probably tell, I am very excited about this unit and it's performance. After the mods are completed, I plan to send it up to Seatlle so Audio Circle's own resident HT expert, Bubba, can evaluate it. I believe Al Garay, who also lives up there has a stock unit to compare it to.

If there are any other AC members who have an OPPO and would like to compare the two, please get in contact with me. I would like to send it out to maybe two others to see how it does in different systems.

FWIW I am using a Hitachi 57S500 that has been ISF calibrated for each input. All of the HT components are plugged into an Equi=Tech Son of Q power conditioner. Audio is run into a modded Panasonic SA-XR70 with all VMPS speakers.

Great news Wayne.

Man, if my pj or plasma had DVI inputs...

I know what a nice job you did on my Panny dvd player - I am sure the modified OPPO will be stunning!!

Thanks, George :D

The OPPO comes with a 1.5 meter cable. You can have your choice of DVI to DVI or DVI to HDMI.

I have a stock Oppo paired with a NEC HT1000 projector with an anamorphic lens.  The picture is quite amazing in stock form.

Brian, let me  know when you receive the modded Oppo. I would be glad to check it out against the standard one.

I wish they had a SACD player. Other than that, it's impressive.

Sure Al, I'll let you know when it's up here. I figured you might want to see what it's like...

It'll be interesting to see how it performs compared to what I'm used to. I'm actually most interested in the PAL capabilities. And I'd bet I'm the only AC'er that's interested in that.

Greetings all
I have had the OPPO for about 2 weeks and am very pleased with it. I ordered a PAL DVD from Germany recently and it played fine except for some twitter on horizontal lines. I tried a SVCD yesterday and it played fine. I am using an NEC LT150 RGB analog input projector. So am I using the component outputs of the OPPO? NO! A Dtronics DVI to VGA converter works great and it's HDCP compatible, if required in the future. Of course this converter cost more than the OPPO, but a LOT less than a new DVI projector.

Comparing the OPPO to my Lumagen Vision scaler (using component input), I doubt I could see a difference if I was double blind tested! It's that good.

Wayne,
I've had the Oppo since it first came out and have been very pleased with the  pq and even the DVD-A sound (especially from this price point).  I have it married to a Runco 930 CRT pj via the Dtrovision DVI-to-VGA converter.  I'd love to demo your modded unit.  All speakers are VMPS (RM/X's, RM-30 center; four 626 surrounds soon will replace Alon Centris surrounds currently) Thx,
Ted

I am, as of  Jul 7, 2005, an HT buff, using my VMPS RM40s and Bolder modded Panny XR45 for sound and this same OPPO DVD player with the much touted Panny AE700 projector. In fact, it was this forum's assessment (including Wayne) of the OPPO that led me to purchase it.

So, I can authoritatively state that the gap in video quality between Discovery Channel and INHD high def broadcast  and the best DVD has to offer (via the OPPO) is enormous. DVDs looked pretty good (having nothing to compare them with) until I got my high def cable box in house.  The native 480 lines of DVD material vs. the native 1080 lines of HD material should fall far short, after all. (Please correct me if my numbers/understanding is wrong). I don't see how any mods can make up that kind of ground.

Wayne's promise that he can boost the quality of the DVD output of the OPPO to near true HD broadcast is one that I would certainly like to experience myself. Put me on the list for my own in-home comparo, Wayne, please. I just sold my Norh CD-1 cd player and have the funds available. Good timing, eh?

How about an all AC HT equipment system consisting of:

A modded Oppo DVD and cabling from Boulder
A 5 channel tubed pre-amp from Mapletree (Line 5SE)
Teac modded digital amps from Red Wine
Omega speakers or Horns
Room treatments from Eighth Nerve

Ted,

Does it defeat the purpose of using DVI and upcoverting if you have to convert it back to analog (VGA)?

My Marantz VP12-S1 and Panny plasma don't have DVI inputs.

Count me in as interested. I have an Oppo and a new Mits DLP. Unfortunately I can't go in for an audition very quickly because my TV has some issues at the moment. If the audition is still araound in a month or so, I would be happy to give it a try.

Ted,

No, the upconvert is done in digital domain, then the analog convert is done.  The result is quite stunning and crystal clear....only very slight video fr dropoff via Avia test patterns.  My pj has no scaler or upconvert capabilities so it's only done once.  I have an older Faroudja doubler for some other video sources, but not DVD or my HD stb.

The Dtrovision box is a life saver for us CRT owners....and is likely becoming unavailable as many interpret its non-HDCP capability as a loophole (i.e it doesn't care whether a DVI connection is copy protected or not).  Many are figuring that the  future-format DVD players will assume DVI at the least, so my Dtrovision box is a necessity (until I move to digital projection....no need while my CRT looks so good...until it blows tubes, of course   :(   ).

George,

There are some convertors that take DVI into analog VGA/RGBHV. They are a bit on the expensive side. I believe this is what Jon Marsh, among others, is using with his OPPO and his projector.

Dtronics

teb_b and Seminarian, get in touch with me with shipping information.

After Bubba and Al are done with their demo, I will do my best to get it out to you.

For the others, thanks VERY much for your interest. I will see about extending the tour so others can get a chance to see if the mod is worthwhile.

Thanks guys.

Not sure I will go down this path right now as my cable is already in wall and is component.  This means I would need a component to VGA connector as well.

Once I start adding up all these devices, I am not sure how much of a benefit I would see in picture quality.

Agreed.  Don't go the DVI-Component-VGA route.  Too many connections, if nothing else.  Maybe there's a DVI-D to component box.

Sorry. OPPO outputs DVI-D only. No analog is available on the DVI connector. See here --  http://www.oppodigital.com/opdv971h_FAQ.htm

No.

That would only work with DVI-A or analog outputs. The OPPO outputs a DVI-D or digital only signal.

What do these DVI to VGA converters cost? I don't have DVI on my new Loewe, but it does have a VGA input.
