This is great news! ProjectorCentral just ran rave review... and now you're doing mods. It's too bad this guy doesn't have HDMI instead of DVI. That would simplify mods and decrease cable costs when linking to the Panny SA-XR70S :(. Oh well, it still sounds like a winner.

That a good price, or is that spendy?

I know that the Component to VGA adapter I've got is a $200 adapter (got it thrown in with the Loewe! ). But I'd not looked at DVI to VGA adapters before.

I believe it either comes with a DVI cable, or a DVI to HDMI cable with no cost difference. And I'm sure Wayne can correct me if I'm wrong. Which'd make it no problem if you've got HDMI.

Yes... it does or can come with a DVI/HDMI cable. I was referring to not needing all the analog cables for DVD-A and the digital coax for redbook and DVD-V. Like I said, it still seems like a winner even without the HDMI.

Well, to handle DVD-A through HDMI would require an HDMI 1.1 codec at a minimum, not 1.0 (which is usually the default).  Oh well, cables are our life, I guess.

It will probably be some time before HDMI gets sorted out, so this may be a blessing in disguise.

!  ?  Talking two different things, here.  Wayne was responding to the inquiry about the price of the DVI-to-VGA converter ($350).  Oppo has always been $199.

What does Redbook sound like on Oppo stock?

Does anyone have some comments that address fabaudio's question?  I was curious myself...

Thanks!

Redbook sounds fairly thin, as should be expected.  It's not built for redbook; only average analog stage at best.  The Crystal chip dac is ok for DVD-Audio but the analog stage is it's achilles heel (and why Wayne is looking to mod that stage, as well).

These redbook comments are only after a couple of listens.  I didn't buy it for redbook (tubed output Modwright is several leagues past it) so take with a few grains of salt.

I imagine the OPPO will be used as a transport most of the time. Taking the digital output signal into a pre/pro or a receiver. Thw "standard" mod will be to enhance the digital output.

I will offer a serious upgrade for folks who want to use it as a stand alone player. I will completely rebuild the analog audio output section. It will not be cheap. The stock parts in the OPPO's analog section are VERY inexpensive and all will have to be replaced.

I am waiting on some coupling caps to finish off this OPPO and send it on it's way to Bubba.

Thanks for the comments, guys!

Have you looked at Redbook performance through the S/PDIF output, rather than the analog output?

Wayne, I'm assuming that it would be much cheaper to mod the S/PDIF output (optical or coax) instead of the analog output?

Thanks!

It is less expensive to mod the digital audio output. That will be pretty much a "standard" part of the mod. I will offer an option to add either a 75 ohm BNC connector or a WBT NextGen 75 ohm RCA connector for coaxial s/pdif output.

I can add a pulse transformer for additional isolation of the digital signal. A Bybee purifier can be installed before going into the digital output and will work on both optical and coaxial outputs.

The sound quality of the digital audio output improved on both redbook and DD/DTS signals after the first round of power supply mods.

The BlackGate caps will not arrive in time for me to install them before I go on vacation.

I will put them in when I return and get the Oppo shipped out to Bubba ASAP in early August.

Pardon me for sounding stupid but for the life of me I can't see any reason to mod. The oppo audio section. I have an oppo and I use a digital audio cable that goes into my Kenwood H.T. receiver. Everything sounds real good this way. So I'm confused as to what benifits it would be to mod. the audio section on the oppo. Wouldn't it be better to mod. the Kenwood?

Charlie,

In most cases modding the analog audio section of a DVD player would not be the best idea. If you are using the digital output ONLY of the OPPO it will not give you any benefit.

It will be of benefit to folks who want to use the DVD-A portion of the OPPO.

Because of copying concerns, you cannot output a digital signal of DVD-A material. The only way to listen to DVD-A is through the analog outputs.

I do realize this mod will be of limited interest, but there are some folks out there who do listen to DVD-A. This mod will be an option.

Honestly, when I saw the 4558 op-amps inside the OPPO the first thing I thought was that they had to go

I am sure that everything does sound very good. However I am always trying to make things sound even better

Wayne1:
Thanks for the info. In my case all I use the oppo for is DVD play and as I said The audio out is by a digital cable to a Kenwood receiver. I never listen to all the other options that many DVD players offer. I never play a CD on the oppo. I'm a two channel man myself and have an audio system dedicated to that and only that.
 Hey Wayne1!!!
Keep up the good work and Hi Fi forever!!!
