I am back from the cruise and in Seattle. I hope to get together with Bubba tonight for some dinner and Brewski's.

AK was a bit cooler than CO. I guess it hit 103 in Denver while I was gone. While Skagway was cool in temp. I enjoyed Ketchican a lot more.

Overcast and constant rain. It was more of what I expected from Alaska.

I was waiting for BlackGate coupling caps for the OPPO before I left. They should have arrived in Denver while I was gone. I hope to install them and finish up the audio section rebuild when I return on Monday.

I hope to post some impressions of the "final" mod by next weekend. I am also hoping to be able to add the mods to my webpage so they can be ordered next weekend.

I am "authorized" by Oppo to purchase, resell and mod their product. I should be able to offer modded Oppos for sale shortly. Of course, if you already have an Oppo, you can send it to CO for mods.

How is the sound of the Oppo stock? I'm considering buying one but wouldn't be looking at modding it right away.

The sound is decent coming out og the digital output. It is improved quite a bit with power supply mods.

I would not use the Oppo stock from the analog outputs.

Wayne

If i read this thread right, since the audio section of the oppo is its obvious weak link -for audio you are reccomending the use of the digital out to an extnernal jack?

At least for those of us who want a one box player and have a dac already

I think we need to get our terminology sync'ed up  :)

To me, a one box player is a CD or a CD/DVD player that will use it's internal DACs and audio output section. There are quite a few folks that mod good one box players to sound better than stock without the need for an external DAC.

The OPPO does not have a "problem" with the audio section. In order to meet a $200.00 price point, some compromises had to be made. The compromises OPPO made in the audio section are very common in most DVD players arounf this price. They used inexpensive, polarized, electrolytic coupling capacitors ( so do Pioneer, Denon, Sony, Panasonic, etc) an older, inexpensive dual op-amp, ouput coupling caps, muting transistors and so on.

Most of the stock DVD players offered today use the same basic design. Some of the more expensive ones use more expensive op-amps.

Using the OPPO as a transport (ie, taking the audio signal from either the optical or coaxial digital ouputs) and feeding it into an external DAC for two channel, Redbook CD use is a good idea.  It will bypass the internal D/A section and should give you better sound than a stock OPPO. This is not a one box soultion. You have at least two boxes with the DVD player and the DAC. Most DACs that I know of will not process Dolby Digital or DTS audio.

You will need an A/V receiver or preamp/processor to decode the Dolby Digital and DTS soundtracks on most DVDs. You cannot listen to the high bit rate audio on DVD-As through the digital outputs. That is why I am working on modding the internal audio section on the OPPO.

If you have no desire to listen to DVD-A, then there is no need to get the analog audio section modded.

I am in the process of finishing up the audio mods on the OPPO, I have done some additional work on the digital output section and I have added a Slipstream Bybee in the line. I find it to be a GREAT improvement. There is far more information coming through. I am hearing more things between front to back and rear side to side channels.

So are you saying the mods that you're doing to the analog section of the Oppo won't affect how Redbook CD's sound?

The mods I am doing to the analog section will change the sound of everything that goes through it. If you are using the digital output of the OPPO for D/A convertion, then what I am doing to the analog won't change a thing.

I said what I did about DVD-A because the only way you can listen to DVD-A discs at full bitrate is throught the analog section.

If you want to use the OPPO as a stand alone DVD/CD player WITHOUT using the digital output, then modding the analog section will affect Redbook, DVD-A and standard DVDs when played back using the analog outputs.

Most folks I know use their DVD players mostly as transports feeding a receiver or Preamp/Processor.

I have finished up the mods on the analog section. I only have one DVD-A (Frank Sinatra) and it is sounding VERY GOOD. The BlackGates and the rest of the components I installed need some time to break-in, but I am impressed upon initial listening.

Well, Wayne's modded OPPO showed up just a few minutes ago. I'm running it in a bit more as he said it could use a little more break in.

But a quick (very quick) demo of the OPPO w/a Nitro PC with Furutech Rhodium plugs and a Cryo'd Bolder Digital with Silver WBT NextGen's against my stock Pioneer DV-AX10 w/stock PC and a Bolder Cryo'd Napalm Ultra Digital cable showed that the OPPO was rather good on the digital out compared to AX10.

Which I'd say is pretty damn impressive that the OPPO is sounding that good. It reminds me a lot of a Proceed PMDT w/topline Transparent Audio AES/EBU digital. For reference the AX10/cable combo was about $6,500 & the Proceed/cable combo was about $8,000. And the OPPO w/the mods that effect the digital out is about $700.

Sure, I need to do a more detailed comparison between the OPPO & my AX10. And I need to run the OPPO in a bit more. But the quick comparo was impressive from such a little player (the tray of my AX10 is taller than the entire OPPO  ).

So I'm beginning to see why Wayne speaks so highly of the OPPO...
