I came across some DIY speaker design plans at the place called Speaker design works.
Here it is a 3 way monitor with a Tang Band 4" as an open back that crossover from 500Hz - 4kHz.
This looks like an interesting build.
Any have some experience with this?

I'm sure these are nice, but they are not open baffle ;) I'll move your thread to Enclosures.

I have built almost every speaker in the statement family.  What specific questions do you have?

hi Huskerbryce,
Great to hear some have experience with them. That you build more than one of them probably are good testamonial they are worth making  :D
First question are if the open back on the midrange give a noticeable bigger soundstage? The other are if you used all stock components or done some upgrading on caps inductors?

I have in the past built the statements, the statement 2, the statement center, the statement 2 center, the statement monitors, the mini statements, and the micro statements.  These are all older designs so make sure you check driver availability before building them.  My speaker progression has been away from box enclosures and now into open baffle.  The pass through with the midrange drivers on the statement line does make a noticeable difference in depth (sound stage).  If you can get them out into the room it helps.  I thought the entire statement line offered a solid home theater performance at a good value.  For music they sound ok.  There are better sounding designs out there.  Depends on your budget and what you plan to use them for.  I used upgraded crossover parts.  I had to beef up the crossover significantly as I had a few failures.  The main inline resistor on the mid circuit in the statement got really hot and burned open.  I ended up using 4 wire wound resistors in parallel to give it more power handling.  If you are going to music and want “open” sounding stage take a look at the NX line on GR research diy kits.  They sound great.

All speakers have some limitations. For the statement lineup I thought they sounded pretty good as an all-around speaker for both home theater and for music. The limitations I encountered were tweeter dispersion and midrange performance.  They have excellent horizontal dispersion virtually no vertical dispersion. Unless you’re sitting down in the butter zone, they don’t sound their best. I thought that the mid range drivers were a little bit small. They lacked the visceral impact of dynamic instruments like snare drums. I felt they just didn’t give me that visceral pop that I really was looking for in a live performance. They excelled in bass response and overall versatility with home theater.  I feel they were a good value. I used them primarily for home theater. Once I started getting more into stereo music, I thought I needed to move to something that offered something more.  Thats when I started building open baffle speakers.

Just dont use cheap iron core inductors or use if you dont want spend more.

Its beyond my understanding why.this speaker is a 3-way design even using a very small woofer that could easily run up to 4000Hz what could be a cheaper and simpler 2-way design with less parts in the x-over and less the midrange driver.  :duh:

Great inputs :D
For sure no iron core planned.
Need some speakers that can be standmount and give great hifi experience. i was also thinking about NX studio + a sub as this dont really have much down in the low octave.
The stetement monitor looked to be some that could handle the base also.

If you dont want spend in active sub see the Beyma KX200 coaxial 12'' woofer 250W 98dB with the factory xover 1800HZ second order, enclosure are BR 100 Liters.
