What solder station do you use?
« on: 14 Jan 2023, 11:37 pm »
I know there are a ton of variables in this choice. Mostly I've done small electronics components or digital so 25 Watts or a little more. However, that is associated with soldering on PCBs. What's the choice for point-to-point wiring/soldering?

I've already picked up some 63/37 solder and still need to grab some flux.

I have an NX Studio kit to do.

Thanks,

Bob

My Daughter bought my Granddaughter a just under $20 soldering iron kit, 60W, that is not bad. We have used it for three crossover rebuilds and two kit builds and she is perfectly happy with it. No need to spend a bundle. Find something you like and that fits your budget and go for it. I'm sure others will chime in as well.

Good luck,
JCarney

I use a Hakko FX888D.

Same here.  I never knew how nice a soldering station could be until I tried one of these.  They're just awesome.

My Hakko FX-888D just arrived from Amazon along with kester silver solder. I just ordered solder holder dispenser, tip cleaning paste, smoke extractor and work station clips with a lighting magnifier. I am switching from 60/40 old gear.

Hakko (939 or 936, can't recall).  and Hakko brass mesh thing for tip cleaning. and hakko fume device, the cheap one, not the thousand dollar industrial.

the fume device works a lot better than others, since you can use it vertical or horizontal.

A Weller soldering gun for the big stuff in tube gear. A couple of Weller irons in a dual iron stand and a Metcal station mostly for the really small stuff. Have a bunch of different tips for each, several different solders and paste fluxes. The Weller irons get used most, but the gun and the Metcal have their place and being able to switch to the right one makes everything a lot more efficient and enjoyable. There are other brands out there that probably work as good as the Wellers, but the Metcal is mil spec and hard to beat for small, sensitive parts (but expensive). I will buy a digital display variable temperature station to replace the Weller irons when they fail eventually. What you can use comfortably is important too. The smell of solder in the morning smells like....Victory!! maybe that's why I have never bothered with a fume extractor.

For soldering male tube connectors and heat shrink, I use a W.E.P. 858D SMD Rework Station.

For all other soldering, I use a Hakko FX-888D.

WEP 948-III solder/desolder station.  Just got it a week ago.

Have a Techman soldering station from Radio Shack.  Still works well after decades of use.

FRM - I don’t know anything about it but it looks way more efficient than my blue plastic solder sucker, a simple spring loaded item that I’ve had for a couple of decades.
