Get Back. The Beatles
« on: 29 Nov 2021, 03:59 pm »
I am somewhat surprised to be starting this topic because there's been so much build up to this.
I binge watched the 3 episodes the weekend and here is my review: it is excellent.
I've been a big Beatles fan forever and this series delivers.
The footage is great and it's been edited so well that it becomes a 'you are there' experience.
So what are the opinions of everyone here on AC?

I watched all of it this weekend too.

The picture and the sound, including dialog, are phenomenal. This definitely puts you in the studio with them.  The dark and murky picture (and sound) are gone - I was enthralled with every scene as it invites you in.

Overall, their griping with one another seemed minimal.  The obvious exception being when George left - he seemed the unhappiest of all of them.  The other three seemed fairly engaged with the project.  I didn't expect John to be as enthused about it as he was (although he seemed nervous about doing the live show).  In fact John seemed much more involved than I had given him credit for all these years.  The row between George and Paul didn't seem as bad when seen in its full context.  Well, I never thought it seemed that bad in the original movie either.  Paul seemed very okay with Yoko and almost defended her and Johns right to be together all the time.

This movie is brighter, happier, more upbeat than the original.  I don't think that will surprise most people.  But you definitely get to "see behind the curtain" more of the group dynamics and interactions between members.  That's where the payoff is.

Watching the development of the songs is portrayed much better in this version as well.  Get Back and Don't Let Me Down are especially tasty.

I do have a couple of gripes.  A few songs seem to get nearly overlooked, specifically Paul's piano songs (Let It Be & The Long and Winding Road).  We get a taste of "this is the album version" showing them being played, but I don't think there's a full performance to be found anywhere in the movie of either song.  I really, REALLY wanted to see & hear those full versions.  I'm hoping they are bonuses on the blu-ray/DVD.

There's probably a few musical sequences I could have lived without, including a few oldies, Yoko singing and Mary yelling into the mic.  Those sequences are short though and are representative of what actually happened, so...

I enjoyed it and recommend it.

It is indeed. And you can also watch McCartney with Rick Rubin on McCartney 3 2 1 as an added bonus.
Highly recommended.

  Mary yelling into the mic.

That was Heather, Pauls' adopted daughter. Mary hadn't been born yet.

Is there any way somebody who doesn't have Disney+ is ever going to get to see this?

All these content providers have free trials of some sort. Sign up for the trial, watch the film, cancel within the trial period.

I haven't seen any free trials for D+, at least not now, while this show is still so hot. Disney's parsimonious nature is well known. But you can sign up, pay $7.99 for your first month, watch them all and cancel. Not much different from going to a theater except a month of the subscription is considerably cheaper.

OTOH, I've seen people in various forums claim that Disney has said there will be an eventual release on Blu-Ray, but I've googled that several times and can't find any such announcement from the company.

The streaming services have gotten wise to the free trial scam and are offering either discounted trial periods or bundles.  In either case they have your billing information while demanding automatic debit to get the offer.  Then they make cancelling a nightmare knowing that many will say screw it and keep the service.  And if you do manage to get it cancelled before the full price kicks in they have all of your contact info and bombard you with ads on every platform.  I'm still getting daily ads for several streaming service I cancelled over a year ago.

Thanks for your opinion.
Meanwhile I watched some of part 2 last night. There's so much to see and hear. I love when Paul leans over to Billy and says 'nobody's asked you if you mind coming in every day.' Billy replies ' no it's a groove. I've got nowhere else to be.'
Ha! The band really starts to cook with Billy there.

Craig, Letitroll,

For many, the problem may be solvable by finding a friend who has Di$ney+ and bribing them to let you come over with the beverage of their choice. Unless they've added a ban on that to the D+ T&C or developed spyware to enable your 'smart' TV to rat you out for letting someone watch their content without paying (give 'em time...)

Regarding 'overratedness': None of The Beatles were the absolute top-shelf on their instrument (something I would also say about the Stones), but they were good enough to get their point across and were some of the best songwriters ever. John & Paul (especially Paul) very good singers too. (My 2¢)

And then they joked about when he'd be getting paid!  :icon_lol:

That's essentially how we saw the first two parts - visiting my brother for Thanksgiving, and watching it there. We only stayed until Saturday morning, though, so we haven't seen the last installment yet, and probably won't unless I sign on for $7.99 just to watch it, then cancel.

I quit smoking eleven years ago and I swear I could smell cigarettes in my hair and the den after viewing the first thirty minutes of it last night ;-} Was a pleasure watching them at work - from their morning greetings through to the evening adieus. The train wreck that was toward the end of the first part was a bummer, but I just had to look  (having read the book)....onward to the second part.

Come on now. Go to your closet and sell some of those 100$ cables in there.
Then you can afford it.

I decided to quit being so cheap and watched Part One last night.
It is really interesting to see them go from just fooling around to actually putting a song together.
George was certainly out of sorts, see you around the clubs...
