Hope I'm not too late to the game. I'm basically in the same boat as you here, in the planning stage. I'm a long ways away from actually putting anything together, as it's going to require a move to get a dedicated space. But here's my thoughts...
What I plan to do for parts like DAC, streamer, etc, is start out really cheap with Raspberry Pi based solutions. I don't think there's any way to avoid "upgraditis" in this hobby, so for the first round of serious components I'm going to spend as little as possible while still maintaining things that are regarded as great sounding solutions. This way, as upraditis kicks in, I'm upgrading to 1000+ dollar components from stuff that was a few hundred dollars, as opposed to being forced into a position where I have to spend 3-4000 to realize any improvement. Does that make sense?
Just thought I'd give you some food for thought on your journey. Have fun with it!
