I lost my lovely little friend, Berkeley, my kitty cat, this morning.

That's hard. I'm a cat lover and currently have four cats that we took in when they were strays. We don't know their ages or histories, but we give them good care and medical check-ups. One of them has FIV and I am determined to give her the best life possible for the time she has. No symptoms yet though. Losing good friends is so hard. Condolences Frank.

Hate to hear that you lost a good friend. God is awesome that He gives us such great companions. I lost my best listening partner late last year. It is tough, but it made space for two new kittens we rescued. Muffin was the best cat I ever had and we will always remember her.

Sorry for the loss of your beloved Berkeley. My wife, son, and I are outnumbered by two dogs, four cats, and a chinchilla. The oldest dog and cat are pushing fifteen years. I fear they are not far behind Berkeley. Hope you find another loved one soon.

Years ago my rescued male Pekingese passed away. We had him cremated, and we were given a copy of the Rainbow Bridge poem. About a month later, we found a female Pekingese at a pet shop in So Cal. She is almost the same color as my little boy who passed. Imagine that. She will be turning 5 this summer, and she’s just a bundle of joy. I guess things happen for a reason.

Frank, may your heart heal and find comfort knowing that Berkeley is in a safe and better place and is free of ailment.

If I remember correctly, Berkeley followed Stanley. Find solace that they both are watching over you and are probably lining up your next loving feline friend.

Frank, I am so sorry for your loss. Having to put a dear friend down is the most gut wrenching thing imaginable.

The last time I faced that, I questioned my sanity for being so utterly devastated by the loss of a pet after having lost my grandparents, parents and so many relatives and good friends over the years. But no, I wasn't insane. I was heartbroken by the loss of my faithful companion.

In time, that heartbreak will slowly give way to beautiful memories. I believe a good pet can make us a little better for having known them.

You are in my prayers.

As one who once sat crying uncontrollably in the vet's parking lot after having a kitty euthanized, I sympathize completely, Frank. They can mean so much to us - more than most people. As I sit home worried about the virus, my main thoughts are not for me, but what will happen to my current kitty if I get sick. If I do get ill I have arranged for a cousin to take care of her, but what if he gets sick?

Just try to remember the joy she brought you.

I am sorry for your loss. Cat angels left a Blue Russian kitten in my rhododendrons about a year and a half ago. The old outdoor female calico cat I feed wouldn't tolerate her, so I brought her inside. She is my buddy and I can't imagine losing her. My house looks like a cats play pen. I had an outdoor red tabby tom named Bird, that I tamed as a feral kitten. He was a good fellow, but disappeared when he was 5 years old. I looked for him to come home for months but he never made it. I still miss him. He loved a belly rub.

My condolences. I’ve had to put down 2 cats within the last few years. Both lived a long and happy life. Both times it was so much harder than when I lost just about any human family member. I cried far more for them than any human. As odd as that may seem. We all know that day will come with every pet, yet we’re torn to pieces and so not ready when it’s actually time. The first time I saw my father cry was when we had to put our Doberman down. At 43 years old, I can honestly say my old man is the mentally toughest person I’ve ever met, so that says a lot.

The only thing I could say to my cats before I left the vet with an empty carrier was “I hope we made you as happy as you made us.” I had no other words.

Again, my condolences.

That's such a great way of describing what being an animal caretaker (I dislike the word 'owner' in this context) is about.

Fortunately, it takes a lot less to make most pets happy than it does most humans.

glynnw: Please try not to worry so much about the virus. If you can stay home or at least take the precautions we've all heard about you will be just fine and so will your kitty. You're not going to get sick!

Sorry to hear about your loss Frank. I've been through that before and I know how you feel. I had to let my old cat Mr.Bubbles go because of brain tumor. My deep condolences to you and your family.
