Hello Guy,I have been polluting the virtue circle with my post to convince people to use batteries for power supply for their Virtue babies.During my visit to you i did tell you about my Oppo blu ray 95 model that i did buy a bit to early because now they have 105 which has a dac input so can be used to connect audio out from my seperate tv decoder . This decoder is a 350$ samsung so i expect the Oppo to be much better. The price of the 105 is rather steep and the 95 is still new so i must wait some time to justify buying a new one.The headphone looks really nice reminds me of my first Stax that i did buy 35 years ago. That one was really good.I did do some digging in my electronic room. I did find 2 6AS7G manufactured in 1974 by RCA. They have boxes that looks like army surplus. No bright colours, plain carton, with some printing on it. Probably will visit Vietnam end this year again. I can bring them for you if you like.Sincere greetings to you and your wife, Edward
Guy...my experience in owning two of the Crack amplifiers and severalsets of Senns over the years tells me that you need to give that amp timeto break in as well as the headphones. Some combinations of tubes cansound a bit bright (accentuated upper mids and lower highs) others, moresmooth or even laid back through that region. As far as heat, it is going to run warm and in fact, tubes sound best whenrunning at a certain temperature. The top plate will always be warm/hotand the transformer warm. It might help to have some small legs 1/2 to 3/4"or spikes under it to allow airflow in through the bottom of case and out the slots on the top. Enjoy...that's a great combo!Hibuck....
Hello, Guy!I like your set up in the pics. I, too, own a pair of HD650s. I really like them, but I seldom use them. Every time I try to use them....and just start relaxing into the music, my dear wife decides she absolutely needs to ask me a question or get me to help her. Her timing is magical. If my wife and I ever get to Vietnam, I'd sure like to visit you and your wife. Can you see me in my avatar picture? It may not be very clear.Michael
Hi Guy...Congrats on the Crack and the HD 650s....I don't these at the moment, but have a set of Beyer t90s, 1350s , LCD2 and AKG q701...and have tired many amps both solid state and tubes...The dark adjective you use is familiar, that is the Dark sound like there is something missing....or shaved off.On particulary bright headphones like the T90s many people really like the Crack with them because the amp takes off the edge and makes them a little less bright hence more dark....On my soild state Objective 2 amps the parining is very very accurate but on some recordings that are not that great the combination sounds very harsh...but that's what is in the recording...garbage in garbage out.So people use a tube amp like this and others to help tame that harsh sounding stuff to them but at the expense of losing stuff and getting a darker sound....Seems like there are compromise everywhere.Does it sound any worse or accurate with your amps you have been using since the crack?I had a Schitt Lyr and a SOHA II I built but after hearing the dark sound I sold them both for a more neutral transparent amp that at least would show me what my headphones really sound like with good material. If I think I am hearing anything less than what I am used to I always go back to my standards to see if I am just imaging it or is the new part of the chain really affecting the sound like I think. All the bestStay Cool!!Alex
guy...Everyone hears differently. I don't find my 650's and Crack at all dark...but then I don't like"forward" or bright sound, so that may well be the difference. You can experiment a bit with the driver tubes without spending much money and change the tonal palette just a bit. I tried a 12BH7 for awhile and that was a bit more forward than I preferred, so went back to a NOS12AU7 and the 6SA7 variant I am using as a final.good luck...Bob
Guy...Understand your solid state amp concerns....but you could try an Objective 2 amp which I have 2 of and really enjoy them. They are really inexpensive! They would drive your 650's and I think the sound will not be as "dark" as your now experiencing....$129 fully assembled!! Just have to buy an AC to AC adapter....www.jdslabs.comAll the best and stay cool in planet VietNam..Alex
Hi Guy,If tubes get too hot for you, the guys at Headfonia.com really liked the HiFiMeDIY tk2050 with the HD650s. Mike, the author of that article, is a big fan of the HD650s and is a tube guy, too, if I'm not mistaken. I think the whole thing costs about $100USD... Of course, then you'd have to find a balanced cable, which could cost a lot.
