Attaching speaker cloth to a grill frame
« on: 3 Apr 2014, 09:22 pm »
I know there are a lot of proficient DIYers on this board so I wanted to get a survey of how you folks actually attach cloth to a speaker grill frame.  Appreciated info would be what type of glue you use and how you keep the cloth in place while stretching it for a nice tight look.

Thanks alot.

I don't use glue. I use an upholstery stapler with thin staples.

I would really love to use staples.  I staple fabric to the acoustic panels and bass traps I make.  What size staple do you use?

I use Spotnails #87005 - 71 series C (SENCO C / FASCO 7C / BEA 71) - upholstery staples with a 3/8" crown and 5/16" length.

Also a stapler, less messy, more control. Look here about 1/2 way down page for how I do it.

Like Mike, I also use a light wire upholstery stapler...I can get model if you need it. I think I can get as short as 3/16 leg which I have used on occasion for 1/4" material. I also like to recess the rear to accommodate the material bunching in corners.

That's great.  Thanks for the link.  I have a rabbet router bit that I can use to cut a recess for the staples so this should be perfect.  I own this staple gunhttp://www.homedepot.com/p/Arrow-Fastener-5-in-T50-Heavy-Duty-Staple-Gun-T50/100021099.

Link didn't get me there, but T-50 is a pretty good sized staple. Gun I have is Senco SJ10, and contrary to what that label says it will shoot 3/16 leg. I may have put another driver in...had it for years.

Bigger staple in photo is T-50

I have a T50 stapler also. T50 staples do not work very well. They are too thick. They won't seat well (think, have to hit them with a hammer to seat them) and have a tendency to split the grill frame when it gets narrow.

It can be done with T50 staples but it was such a headache I gave up and got an upholstery stapler that uses smaller, thinner staples.

Scotch 77, still holding after 4 years.

Spray the frame, wait about 5 mins, attach/stretch the cloth.
Trim off the excess.
Works like a charm
