just wondering which original pressing of LZI you are referring to? The US Atlantic?

I did some more listening last night to the Zep reissues and some research to find out what older pressings I have.  Thank goodness for Discogs.  Turns out I have SD 19126 - SD 19128, second pressing reissues from 1977.  II and III (SD 19127 & SD 19128) sound fairly pedestrian and the new reissues are clearly superior.  That’s a win.

I still find it curious that the old Zep I (SD 19126) has better low level detail and a more holographic presentation than the new one.  Of the three, it’s the only one that manages to capture this quality.

I have to say, for 20-25 bucks these are a no brainer.  At least for LZII.  Is it better than an RL?  Don't know, never heard one and will probably never buy one.  Ranks up there with the best LP I ever bought for quality and sound.  Mine is flat and quiet.
I will have to listen to my mid 80s copy of I and III to see if they warrant a replacement.

I got my deluxe copies of LZ II and III yesterday. LZI is on backorder. According to my B&M owner the whole thing has been a Cluster-f&*% on the distribution end. I'm surprised there haven't been more complaints posted. I ordered mine very early in the process.

That is exactly what I think.  The new LZI sounds much better than a Korean pressing I have.  LZII sounds simply awesome-- detailed, dynamic and dead quiet. I still need to compare it with 19127 copy that I have.
LZIII is for this weekend, but I have nothing to compare it with.

Now when they gonna reissue the rest of the catalog?

No CD is better than an original issue LP!

Not when you have an Oppo.

I have an Oppo 83SE and 105D, both with the ModWright tube mods to the analog output stage and original issue vinyl plus Classic vinyl reissues, most MoFi reissues, any AAA reissue and 45 rpm reissues are better than any CD played on them--no contest. If folks think a CD sounds better, then I believe the problem is in their vinyl front end and not with the medium.

I think if you bought a good CD player then you would change your mind. The Oppo is not a good CD player IMO. It is a modified DVD player and that is all that it ever will be. The tubes inside if it won't change that. Take the amount of money that you spent on your entire vinyl front end and multiply by 2 or 3. Now go out shop for a CD player in that price range. You can afford it because you are a lawyer. You will be surprised just how much music is hiding in those little silver discs. And you will be surprised how many CDs sound better than your records.

But this is an old and tired argument (CD vs. Vinyl) so I will concede the argument to you and let it rest.

Back to the Zep - I have been listening to my Japanese sleeve remaster CD box set of Led Zeppelin (whichever version that is - I don't remember and I don't really care) just to get a feel for it all again. I plan to go back and spin my old vinyl to compare. And to learn. It will take a little time but I will get there. If I am really wrong I will report back and admit it. That's part of the fun anyway.

FWIW, I don't plan on buying any of the new reissues because I already bought the entire Zeppelin catalog twice now. But if I didn't already have any of it I would be glad to buy it at the price they are asking.

QE,

we clearly disagree about more than which sounds better. IMO the Oppo BDP-105D is an outstanding universal player no matter what disc is playing (so do a lot of reviewers). It is a significant upgrade over the 83 and is far more than a "modified DVD player." It's transport and Sabre32 DAC chip are state of the art audiophile quality. The weakness is in the analog output stage (after the Sabre DAC chip) and the ModWright tube mod takes the sound to a very high level. There may be a better sounding CD player out there, but I'm not spending $40,000 to $60,000 or more on digital playback.

I don't want this to devolve into a pissing contest over which format is better.  Let's stick to comparing vinyl versions. This is the vinyl circle after all.

I am going home to listen to my SRV 45's I just received!  :thumb:

Thanks for your cooperation.

Hmmm...... yeah, you're right about that. I didn't realize that you had 20 grand tied up in your turntable. Most people here do not. Including myself. Well done! In your case I would suggest you spend at least the same amount on a CD player, not 2 or 3 times as much. For most everyone else, probably 2 to 3 times as much. Maybe more. The idea is to get a CD player that will level the playing field with vinyl. And I mean that sincerely. Level the playing field. It's not a better or worse situation.

I personally don't believe that either format is superior. They each have their own strengths and weaknesses. That's all I was responding to. Well, that was my intent anyway. You say there is nothing better than the best pressing of vinyl. I say that statement is a clear indication that you need to work on your CD player. Does that sound reasonable? Have you ever heard a good reel to reel? Prepare to be blown away yet again. Records are only one format. I hope it's OK to say that here.

I still think that you can do better than the Oppo. Way better. But if you love the vinyl so much and you are content with it, then don't sweat it. I really mean that. Just have fun playing your records. Play the Oppo when you are not as focused on the sound quality.

Sorry for the diversion. But hey, it's audio.  :D

Back to the Zeppelin.

QE,

Thank you. I do appreciate your last post. As little as I listen to CDs, the Oppo does what I need it to do and it sounds pretty darn good, better than the Arcam 9 or Denon 3910 transport played through a Musical Fidelity DAC I used to use. My vinyl front end is an SME 20/2 with an SME IV.Vi arm, a Lyra Skala Cartridge and Zesto Andros phono stage. I have heard a good reel to reel and the sound is 2D4. :thumb:

Doc,

I saw your post in P-man's rock n roll vinyl thread and I'm with you. I just listened to my RL Terre Haute pressing and I wish I had taken better care of it back in college and law school. The sound is fantastic, but too many crackles. I'm picking up the new Jimmy Page remastered LZ II tomorrow. I called my B&M store and told Bob to hold one for me.

For some reason I never bought LZ III. I have all the others plus the recent box sets so I'm going to get the new LZ III

It's rock n roll so it's all good. :D

Hi Laura,

I still have my original LP pressings of LZ I, II, and III but as you know I haven't played vinyl in over a decade. That might change soon as I'm thinking of reviewing a cool bamboo turntable later this year.

Cheers,
Paul

Paul,

get yourself a turntable and spin those discs; or better yet, mail them to me. I promise to take good care of them.

Are you going to the CAF?

I know you would.  I'm leaning on reviewing the table and will buy it if I like it enough.  I haven't decided on going to CAF.  I went to the Chicago and Newport shows already, so may take a break but since I'm now writing for Dagogo I may attend.  Are you going to CAF?

Paul,

I am going to CAF. I'm going to be in DC on Business the next week so I'll just come in before the weekend and attend the show. Maybe catch a monument or two I haven't seen in a long time.
