Help with Dodd Battery Preamp
« on: 7 Dec 2013, 01:54 am »
I borrowed the battery from my preamp for another project and forgot to write down how the battery was connected.  Well I switched the cables around and I blew something  .  Initially I thought it was the fuse but than I saw smoke coming out of the preamp and when I opened it I saw that cap below the battery connection was split in 2.  Anyone have any idea on what is required for me to fix it?  I also saw that one of the wires going to the fuse has started to melt.

I am kind of surprised that the fuse is still working but the cap blew  :duh:

Can someone who has a 6h30 preamp take a picture of how your your battery is connected please so I do not blow the cap again.

TIA

Maritan

Looks like a limiting reverse biased (Zener?) diode to me, not a cap. But I could be mistaken. Get all the characters on the part and search it. You'll find out what it was.

Thanks. Will try to solder it off and see what it is.

Look like you had it the battery polarity wrong.
Just cut off the diode and it should work but you don't have the protection anymore.

Yep, I did the same thing, so you aren't the only careless one around here.  Just be careful with polarity with no protection after you cut it out.

Don't worry man. That diode is there to protect the pre-amp when you get your battery polarity flipped. It did it's job, and your pre-amp is fine.

That Gary Dodd is a pretty smart fellow.

And don't feel bad. I'd done it too.

thanks guy.  is the cable with red and black stripe supposed to be on the positive side or the negative.  i think i had that on the negative side on the battery when i blew the diode.

This is exactly what happened to mine, I bought the preamp and upon first set up I watched the plastic melt off the wires (Yikes) I called Gary and it ended up he miss wired the cord inside the plug in and had me snip out the protection and it worked perfect, all I had to do is rebuild a new cord with heavier wire and I was good to go..

If anyone is interested I am selling my preamp, bought it shortly after last years RMAF .......My father became ill shortly after and we lost him in May so I have not even broke it in fully....I now have my mother living with me so I really don't have the time or room to enjoy it..............It has all the upgrades Gary suggested and comes with battery and charger, it is in Cocobolo wood .......................I would be happy if I could get a least half my investment back plus shipping and and additional $100 would be nice so I could send it to Danny to get the Gary to assist him...................PM me if interested, i live just outside Portland Ore.

Thanks
Steve
