I have faceplate in hand now, thanks murphy.  Looks like it's a bit over 3 11/16", probably designed for 95mm recess. As soon as I get front plates from Danny, I'll see what I can do to make up a jig. What's the approximate diameter on your tweeter, Danny? I'm wondering if the mounting holes will intersect the cut down diameter.

Yeah, we may need to drill some new mounting holes.

The GR-T3 is 4.1" across.

I meant to get them out on Monday but had a bit of a setback with my ribs. Going to try and get that done today.

We'll just have to take a look and see what can be done.

I don't envy you the rib injury, they're slow to heal and miserable in the meantime.

Danny, are the face plates plastic and could they be 'cut' with something like this? http://www.homedepot.com/p/Unbranded-Tinner-s-Snips-A11N/100062961   I can try to be patient if it wouldn't work. The GR tweets are definitely too large for the opening by a little bit.

No, that would be rough. A circle jig would easily trim off the outside in a nice circle shape. You just have to mill out a recess for the face plate to fit flush into.

Houston we have liftoff - sort of :)

I held the tweeter wires on the mini to one tweeter and ran a measurement - got output to 20K sweet! Even with the tweeters not mounted or soldered and facing side wall ( was holding wires and tweet in one hand and hit measurement with other hand) the overall sound was significantly more full. I had no idea what I was missing and think getting the tweeter replacement will be a HUGE improvement - almost like getting new speakers. I was really worried that the crossover or internal wiring was screwed up and I would get no high output so today's test was great news.

BTW, is the red terminal positive or negative?

Danny were you able to get test face plates out to Peter? If so and Peter is able to trim the face plate to fit the mini, I think I will not worry about routing out inside of tweeter cutout. I don't have a router and don't plan to get one but if it is necessary sonically I might see if a friend has one. I understand you are injured Danny and this is a favor from both you and Peter so I will hang patiently to see how this works out. Thanks!

The red one or larger of the two terminals is positive.

And yes, I did get off some face plates to Peter. I think I sent seven of them. If more is needed in the future I have more of them.

Danny, I got the faceplates.

These mount from the rear into a recess the size of the original tweeter faceplate, correct? If the edge isn't seen, I can do this on bandsaw quicker than making a jig for router. Really isn't going to be gorgeous anyway because when I trim the diameter I'll get into area that's relieved on tweeter flange backside...does that make sense?

My thought was if you made a jig that knocked them out perfectly round then dropping them into the old smaller tweeter face plate cut out would make them self centering.

They'll be round, it's just easier to jig 'em up on bandsaw....won't be freehand.I'll do one and post a pic.

So long as you aren't free handing them and risking loosing fingers.

You want hole drilled to match original?

Attached pic of tweeter cutout from back.

Tweeter installed from back - cutout slightly larger than tweeter. None of the face plate is visible when installed. I personally will likely not route out the inside back of the cutout so the GR tweeter installs more flush and therefore don't care where the screw cut outs will be. I can also do the cutouts myself if it will be a pain..

I didn't realize the cut out in the baffle for the tweeter was over sized. I wonder if the face plate needs to be reduced at all?

Front of speaker with tweeter removed photo from off center. The brown in the background is a super chunk bass trap a few feet behind the speaker.

Can you get a measurement on the recessed area in the back?

The tweeter cutout is 1/2" deep and there is an additional 1-1/2" depth to where the back screws on.

No, I mean the diameter (since it looks larger than the tweeter). My GR-T3 is 4.1" in diameter.

Looks like 3-7/8" to me. Just barely under 4"
