I just placed an order for the tweeters - Thanks!  Now need to get an iron and solder

I got an order for one tweeter. Did you mean to order a matched pair?

For only occasional use I'd probably grab a $9 pencil type soldering iron from the local radio shack or similar.  Ideally one with a chisel tip, which transfers heat better to fat terminals than a fine cone tip.  Practice on your old tweeter.  Keep the dwell time short.  Youtube soldering techniques if you're a beginner.  Spare set of hands is helpful.

Electrically my GR-T3 is not a bad candidate for a replacement.

http://gr-research.com/gr-t3tweeter.aspx

And since the crossover point is so high, we aren't looking at a real noticeable response change.

Just the face plate is different. I have a lot of extra face plates. So one could make a jig for a router to be used to reduce the diameter of the plastic face plate. Then drill a couple of new mounting holes in it.

It mounts from the back anyway so it would hide any scratches on the edges of the face plate.

Hmmm......

An interesting and helpful idea.  I've had the tweeters in both of my Mini's buy the farm, and while Sandbagger's been able to get me replacements, he doesn't have an infinite supply of Mini tweeters.  So, having a backup plan is a really good idea.

Danny, any sense as to how the GR-T3 would sound in comparison to the stock tweeter?  I'm going to guess that it won't make a huge difference, but I have to admit that I'm curious.

Thanks.

It might sound better. It is a much better all around tweeter.

I just might need to find someone willing to make a quick jig to cut some face plates down. I'll send out a bunch of free face plates to be modified. Then you guys can just order GR-T3 tweeters.

Face plates are easily swapped out. Just three screws and they come right off and back on with another one.

Sweet.  I'm game for trying it out.

Dang, thought I ordered 2. Can you cancel the original order? I just placed a replacement order for a pair because the shipping for a pair is roughly the same as one tweet.

The part that confused me is the option for ordering a single matched pair for $30 bucks more. It made it seem like ordering "1" would be a single unmatched pair. Anyway, the replacement order was for '2' which will get me a pair.

I could have just added another tweeter to your first order. It would have saved me some paperwork and credit card fees. Oh well, don't worry about it. I just cancelled your first order as requested. And I have a pair ready to go out.

Thanks Danny!!!   The second order showed $15 shipping and 2 tweeters were $16 shipping combined so I wasn't sure what to do. Hopefully others learn from my mistake

emac - if you order the tweeters and replace your current ones can you PM me when you receive them? This may sound stupid but I'm kind of nervous about replacing mine because I've never soldered before. Maybe I will start a new thread about replacing tweeters so others can learn.

Let me know how this works, Emac. I'd be interested in trying it too. A friend of mine recently went a little too loud with my Minis (3/4 volume on my Odyssey amp...don't even want to know how many decibals we were spewing out, but my ears sure didn't like it). I think the tweeters are fine, but it'd be nice knowing that the GR-T3 can be dropped in.

Not a problem.  Soldering is relatively easy, but can be intimidating if you've never done it before.  I haven't looked, but there should be some good how to videos available online when it comes to soldering.  Otherwise, taking out the tweeters is easy.  Just a bunch of screws to take out and then put back in.

Not a problem either.  Don't know if it matters, but with my Mini's I have the Ninja mods w/ No Rez and Sonicap Platinums as bypass caps.  So, I don't know if whatever results I get would be completely applicable to anyone else's Mini's.

So any of you cabinet building savvy guys guys want to cut some tweeter face plates?

If not give me a little time to let it warm up outside and I'll get out in there and cut some.

Danny, I'd give it a go.

Once a jig is made should be easy to repeat. Would need a couple to setup on and desired outside diameter.

I can send you a bunch of face plates. Maybe we can get someone to send you a Strata Mini tweeter and we can make sure all is the same.

Peter or Danny, PM me an address and I wll send either of you a Onix mini tweeter after I buy a soldering iron. I was thinking about this one - http://www.sears.com/craftsman-soldering-iron-45-watt/p-00954042000P?prdNo=4&blockNo=4&blockType=G4   Would that work and I will need solder when Danny's tweets arrive so could use a recommendation please.

Murphy, that will work. Just be sure and let it get good and hot before you use it. You want to get on and off of the tweeter quickly. It also helps a lot to tin the end of the soldering iron first and make sure it has solder on it. That will make go much quicker.

And I can send you out a little solder with the tweeters.

They are some terrific speakers, aren't they?  I've thought about upgrading them multiple times, or even putting in the Diluceos that I own.  But can't get myself to stop listening to them.

I bought a soldering iron yesterday at Sears and removed one of the tweeters. Removed the face plate from the magnet and am sending face plate to Peter this morning. It needs to travel across country and should arrive hopefully Tuesday USPS.

Danny

I have a dead strata tweeter here I will send you if you need it.

I will have to check when I get home but I may still have a few tweeters left, although they are the samples av123 use to make the copies they used in the Mini's

I have faceplate in hand now, thanks murphy.  Looks like it's a bit over 3 11/16", probably designed for 95mm recess. As soon as I get front plates from Danny, I'll see what I can do to make up a jig. What's the approximate diameter on your tweeter, Danny? I'm wondering if the mounting holes will intersect the cut down diameter.
