I just got word from Trung.  Thank goodness that he is not being treated at Parkland Hospital this time.  Replacing an aorta is not a simple operation.

I. I wish Gary the best.  He is a nice fellow and I admire his work.

II. Not to be a jerk but I've got to set the record straight.  Parkland gets a lot of bad press mainly because it treats legions of semi-compliant and non-compliant patients and tens of thousands of illegal aliens.  FWIIW I'm fairly well wired into Parkland/UTSW, my son is an MS-1 at UTSW and a number of my friends and neighbors are docs. with Parkland/UTSW ties (teachers, privileges, grads).

1. Contrary to your implication Parkland has a significantly better, higher rated, better staffed etc. cardiac surgery unit than MCP.  Numerically speaking there is a 60% chance that each doc. Gary saw at MCP trained at Parkland - the guy/gal who replaced Gary's aorta likely trained at Parkland etc. Parkland/UTSW has 20 National Academy of Sciences docs and 5 Nobel Prize winners (for context no other medical school in the country is remotely close to that number of  elite docs.).  IIRC 4 of the NAS members are in the cardiac services area.  MCP has no NAS members and of course no Nobel Prize winners.

2. As Gary now lives outside Dallas County Parkland would be a much less viable option without solid insurance.

I am not sure of the correlation between awards and quality of care but I'd love to see the statistics. The best researchers don't always make the best clinicians.

FWIW-
http://hms.harvard.edu/about-hms/facts-figures

Nobel Prizes (Medicine or Physiology; Peace) 9 prizes, 15 recipients
National Academy of Sciences 62

Most importantly best wishes to Gary and his family for his successful recovery.

With respect those Harvard numbers are for all people who've ever won those awards, some awarded in the '30s for example.  They also included Nobel winners who worked elsewhere but won for research done at Harvard.  Just a few days ago a guy at Stanford won a Nobel Prize for work he did at UTSW.  As best I can tell Harvard has two Nobel laureates on staff now and one of them seems to be either retired or semi-retired.  Anyway my point remains that Mr. Clark seemed to run Parkland/UTSW down when in fact it is a world class research facility and teaching hospital.

Perhaps, but it appears that they have some significant quality issues to address. Hopefully they are dealing with them aggressively.

Elise posted this last night:

Well, folks, as of tonight, Gary Dodd is back at Medical Center of Plano. After suffering with sharp/intense stomach pain - he took his sisters advise (thank you Deb Mank ) as she told him, "Quit being so hard headed and go fix it!" I'm glad Gary took her words of advise because it turns out the pain is because of an Infection in the Main Heart Valve. What caused this? The antibiotics - from the Phenoumonia this last time he was admitted to the ER (it was Friday the 13th of December) - - the Loads, trucks, bus load amounts (or so it seems) of antibiotics that were through IV and then to go home with... was just too much.....Supposedly causing the infection now. So! How are they going to tackle the infection in the valve? More antibiotics..... Meanwhile, we will be taking PRO bio-tics to help offset the RX prescribed...... There is the good bacteria, too,...... Well,... So says: "Dr" Elise... So people, if you like... go ahead and get your pop corn------ because, we are all (again) about to see more Medical Marvels take place with God (all things are possible).... Thank you and God Bless us all..

Elise, there are people all over the world praying for Gary and for you.

Through all of this I am so thankful for you being there, loving my friend.  I've known Gary a long time and the old saw about one person completing the other has never been more appropriate.

Thank you,

Prayers and blessings...

yep, I'm running it down.  In spite of the world class people at the top, the actual post op treatment of patients leaves much to be desired.  Last time Gary was in there, he was parked in the hallway for nearly a day.  It's been years since my own negative experience with their emergency room, so my stories are no longer relevant, but they were just as unflattering.

On to more important issues... once again, Gary's friends are praying for recovery, and thankful for Elise to watch over him.

Even though I've never met Gary or purchased any of his products, I know he's a great member of the audio community and wish him a speedy recovery and hope his latest setback is short lived!

Please, let's be well mannered and keep this thread on topic and try not to derail it with arguments tangentially related to Gary's ordeal. We wouldn't argue at his bedside in the hospital over contentious matters would we? Peace!

Update just now from Elise:

Turns out Gary Dodd did not have infection in the main heart valve (thank god!) It's pancreatitis... so they are treating for that and watching everything else. Thank you for your continual support, we love you all. Gary is still in the hospital and your welcome to call and chat with him at: 214-427-9713 (room number is 713) that line goes directly to his room.

Thanks again folks.

Best wishes to Gary and his family......................if anyone is interested I have a Dodd tube buffer not even a year old that I have not even totally broke in yet, father fell ill (lost him) and have moved my mom in so I know longer have the room to use it...................Has the upgrades with charger/battery and I will let it go for $600 shipped and $100 of that will go to Danny to get to Gary to help him out if that is doable?.......PM me if interested

Cheers,

Steve

I've been wondering, so I'll take this opportunity to ask: What is a tube buffer for, and what does it do? Thanks.

A passive preamp is essentially a volume control that typically uses resistors to attenuate volume. However, this way of attentuation causes problems in impedance matching. A tube buffer is a circuit that, using tubes, solves the problem by letting the source see a high impedance and the amp see a low impedance.

The dodd is actually a passive preamp with a tube buffer all in one.
