Steve where is your listening position in the room relative to the wall at the back of the room?

It varies but around 4 foot.
I move the couch, the wife gives me some crap and moves it back, that kind of thing.
Domestic bliss!

The 20.7s are so large that the best seat in the house was about another 6' back from where the couch is which was off axis.
I'd have to be like Eddie Munster and listen to them sitting in the fireplace to get the same distance!

Precisely the problem in my room -- the best listening seat is in the fireplace. Which would be a tad uncomfortable in summer.

Even more uncomfortable in the winter.  :)

The magic is back.
When I had the 20.7s I bought an oriental carpet to help with the bass output and ended up sticking it sideways.
When the 3.7s showed up I had a fleeting thought, "I'd better flip the carpet around to expose more of the floor" but then I got sidetracked and forgot all about it.
I was driving myself crazy as things just weren't sounding right and then last night I remembered to try flipping the carpet around.
Success!  I had the room too dead sounding for the smaller speakers.
Sometimes it's the smallest, stupidest things that can make all of the difference between that sounds terrible to that sounds just right!
For the prurient minded, I left the sex toy out for the pic.

Nice! That's one lesson that many of us Maggie lovers learn early on...even small adjustments can make a significant difference. That's just one of Maggie's special qualities :)

Room looks great!

Looking good. Enjoy the speakers, but don't show us how you use your sex toy. Please.

Oh, very well.
The wife will be relieved to hear this bit of news.

I was over at the Hsu website doing some reading and I think he convinced me to finally hook up a sub with the 3.7s so further adventures await.

Which Hsu Research sub?
I also have a pair of 3.7s!

I'll be using an SVS sub which I use with the MMGs.
In the FAQ section on the Hsu site he has a bit on sub placement and he says that the best position might be the one closest to the listening position.
I looked to my left and there sits the SVS sub so...

I have a bias against Hsu, so glad to hear you're going SVS! I've owned four of those beauties since 2001.

Anyone looking for a great budget option, check out the Outlaw Audio M8. I have one and it blended very well with my 3.6s. Not only that, but it's VERY potent for an 8" driver. Won't hit down into the 20s, but it'll play clean and with authority down into the low to mid 30s.

It's an SVS SB-12 which I bought around 8 years ago from a fellow who was moving into an apartment.
He delivered it in a Mini Cooper and It just barely squeezed into the car.
If you look at the picture of the room it would be at the bottom left at the end of the couch.

Steve,
would a DWM work "better"? I have wondered about getting one for my 1.7s.

Work better than what - a subwoofer?
I was loaned a DMW and when I used that with the 1.7s I used the analogy that it was like a finger - it's better to have all your fingers but you can still get along with one missing.
It won't rattle the floors or anything like that but it does a better job of filling out the lower register than a cheap-o subwoofer like the little NHT I'm using up there.
That goes blub flub bumpadump where the DMW didn't sound bad at all.
If you're looking for bass in the 20s, I'd go with a high quality subwoofer.
If you just want a little more bass and midrange out of the 1.7s, the DMW would be the ticket as it's easier to blend in and will sound better than a cone subwoofer will.
It's also good for smoothing out irregularities in the low end if your room has a lumpy bumpy frequency response.
Does that help any?
For what it's worth, I'm probably going to go with an REL sub for the 1.7s to give it the missing bottom end.
I've always wanted an REL so why not?

A sub at the far left of the couch is a good thing. :D
