Four foot out and toe in same deal?
I have one straight, one toed in a bit.
Every room and system is different so you have to tackle it in person.

As an illustration, with my Sonic Frontiers preamp the top end was just murder with the 20.7s - that'll clean your ears out!
It's just fine with the 1.7s.

Has it been that long?
I still have to get down there to hear what you've done to them.

Believe it or not, I'm still married!

I believe so and I have loved every minute of the journey.   I have since bought another IIIa that was in bad shape for spare parts.   After going though rewiring your old panels I did not want to do that again so this second set of bass/mid panels are back at Magnepan for rewiring.  Since I just sent them the panels (I removed the drivers from the frame, cleaned off the old glue and built a wood crate). Shipping was cheaper and by doing some of the labor I saved quite a bit of money.
I am going to try to redo the second set of the ribbons though.  It is worth the gamble of $50 to try, and if I screw it up I can always send them to Maggy for the exchange.

Kevin,

"It's funny though, my car revs higher than that bike – has a higher compression ratio too. On the other hand, my engine has to lug around a bit over six times the weight with only two and a half times the horse power and a whopping thirty percent more torque. I can wind mine out further, but with quite a bit less acceleration. My car's top comes off, but it's still a car – doesn't match the 'out-thereness' of being on a bike. Carving curvy roads is my car's forte, but it hardly compares to taking those same roads on a bike like that."

One friend who is into performance bikes, mainly Ducatis I believe, found a S2000 with only 7K miles about a year ago.  He absolutely loves it and claims it is the most fun ride he's owned other than a bike.  I've driven it a couple of times and love it too.  But at 6'2" it is very difficult to get in and out of, even with the top down.  If I was younger I could put up with that, but at my age, not so much.

With speakers he is the opposite.  He has large, comfortable Tannoys, rather than something lean and nimble like Maggies.

Well, I'm 6'2" and about 220lbs. I'm also in my 50s. I understand what people say regarding the difficult entry/egress, but I really don't have any trouble at all. There is an art to the process which makes it a little easier - gotta learn what to put where and how to flex (or fold oneself). The tight cockpit is part of what I love about the car. I know I'm a little weird, but I actually find it to be a very comfortable car - and, being a CR, mine is quite a bit stiffer/sharper than a stock/standard S2000 (I had an '06 before the CR).

I love the lean and nimble Maggies too! :D

Opinions are appreciated.  My room is 15' deep, 12' wide.  Theoretically and practically, I can only give the 1.7's 52" off the wall behind them, maybe 54".  That's from the backs of the panels.   I would expect to add some diffusion behind the 1.7's.  What do you guys think about the distance I can manage?  Will the back wave join the front wave too soon?  Too late?  What kind of diffusors would work best?  If I haven't provided enough info, just lemme know and I will.  Thanks.

Opinions are easy and mine is that you should be able to make (up to) 52-54” work exceedingly well – only one way to know for sure. :)

I hear you, Kevin, but don't want to regret the venture by not giving them room to breathe optimumly.  Hence, my concern.  Thanks for your encouragement, mate.  I'd very much like a consensus.  That's what it's gonna take for me to pull the trigger.  What I have now is very high fidelity.

The 3.7s have landed.
These look and sound kind of familiar...

You can tell I was kind of excited by the way I left all of the crap lying around when I took the pictures.

I'm a happy man.

Wow, love the way that wood looks! For some reason those 3.7s look HUGE in that pic....they're the same dimensions as the 3.6s, yes?

I was kneeling in the top picture and it must just be a trick of the lens as they're the same size as 3.6s.
I'll have to give the wood a buff with lemon oil but I do like the dark cherry/black combination.
I was kind of hoping for a compliment on my stylin' rechargeable flashlight which I bought myself for Father's Day many years ago.
Guess not.

I was afraid to comment on anything else in the pic, cause at first I thought that blue thing was a sex toy

Gee wiz Steve,

I just read your post. This hobby sure does make us do some strange things.
The speakers and the room looks great, I'm sure the sound is to die for.

As far as the sex toy goes, it looks like it might hurt if not used properly.

Regards,
Jerry

Nothing like a good June bug up the nose on a sunny day!

I dunno about 20.7s - a year?
Don't tell my wife!

The sound from them is just so distinctive that it's hard to put into words.
Once I finally figured out just how to set the monsters up they made me think of this one August night when I was fishing at a reservoir next to a river - it was hot and really humid and down in this field there must have been ten thousand lightning bugs flashing away like crazy.  It was just entrancing, just magic.  I don't know how long I sat there watching the display.
A similar experience as to how people describe the aura borealis, I suppose.
That's the sound of the 20.7s with big tube amps and vinyl.
I described the sound as being "thicker" or more substantial but that's not quite it - you close your eyes and you're at the venue.
With the 3.7s you're listening to speakers.  Really good speakers but you're not at the venue, you're obviously listening to a pair of speakers.
Would two DMWs and a CC5 do the same trick?  I dunno.

I really would want to have a contractor knock out the front of the house to give me another 6-8' to play with for 20.7s redux.
I can't go back towards the kitchen as there's a fireplace in the way.
What I had to do with the preamp to tame the bass for the 20.7s output put a damper on the dynamics so I would want to sledgehammer the house into submission if I ever picked up another pair.

In the meantime, I'll recharge the old sex toy and break in the 3.7s which still have that weird new speaker something's not right here my ears are clogged up sound.
