No real secret beyond passion and commitment.  Most of the music I enjoy was recorded between 1950 and 1980, and I would much prefer to listen to it on vinyl than I would in any digital format.  To that end I have built a considerable library of vintage mono and stereo vinyl pressings of jazz, classical, and rock -- most of which are in minty shape.  I also own a lot of audiophile 180g and 200g vinyl pressings.

My passion led me to build a retro platform based on a Garrard 401.  One tonearm has a mono cartridge and the the other has a stereo cartridge.

Like I said, you mainly have to have a passion for vinyl.  It isn't for everyone.

I listened at a chum's house this morning who is cutting edge digital.  The images were as fine and detailed as I can imagine, like what you might expect of an exquisite glass for rare wine.  Thing is, it sounded like there was no wine in it.

My experience exactly.  Although digital has gotten much better, it is still a storage format rather than for music playback.

My prob is Iam unable to concentrate in the music with that annoying hiss, plic and plocs.
I mean say the secret to dont listen the surface noises.

About mono, I surprised how good is old mono jazz recording in SACD, as this gem:

Iam buying more mono SACDs than I would expect.

I don't know that it is anything special Bill.  I love the rig, don't get me wrong.  But I don't think it makes my records sound any better than my old SOTA table and SME arm.  It sort of reminds me of the person who likes to drink cognac from an expensive snifter made from Waterford Crystal.  The crystal doesn't make the cognac taste any better, but it does make the experience more enjoyable.

Get the Audio Desk and you'll have pushbutton cleaning. When you bring the vinyl home, go get your favorite beverage, come back and you disk will await you.

Jerome,

That is absolutely gorgeous!!!! :thumb: :thumb: color me green with envy.

You are right about the passion for vinyl, plus it sounds more natural, organic, real. For me, much more enjoyable to listen to than any digital format. A good turntable, tone arm and cartridge helps as does a decent vacuum assisted RCM. For the most part, I don't have pops and tics and surface noise.

I can confidently say that most of my vintage records exhibit surface noise that is below the noise floor of the recording.  This requires really minty records.  Vinyl that has been beaten to death is not going to sound good.  I bought a lot of records for less than $1 each, and while the rejection rate might be a little high, the rewards are great for the keepers you are left with.  Just a few weeks ago I found a London ffss pressing of Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5 by Georg Solti that was practically pristine, and it cost me all of 50 cents.  The sound was incredible.

I just rode home from the thrift on 8 mile with a few records, on a Track Bike.
Not exactly hate but pretty challenging.

And that 401 is beautiful.

One other thing that is worth noting.  When I handle a record it is like I have my hands on a piece of music history.  I don't feel the same way when I play a CD.  Does that make the music sound better?  No, it doesn't.  But it does make the experience more enjoyable to me.
