They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
With a pink hotel *, a boutique
And a swinging hot spot

Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
Till it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

This song is called Alice's Restaurant, and it's about Alice, and the restaurant, but Alice's Restaurant is not the name of the restaurant, that's just the name of the song, and that's why I called the song Alice's Restaurant.

I came upon a child of God
He was walking along the road
And I asked him, "Where are you going?"
 And this he told me...

I'm going on down to Yasgur's Farm,
I'm gonna join in a rock and roll band.
I'm gonna camp out on the land.
I'm gonna get my soul free.

 We are stardust.
 We are golden.
And we've got to get ourselves back to the garden.

Then can I walk beside you?
I have come here to lose the smog,
And I feel to be a cog in something turning.

Well maybe it is just the time of year,
Or maybe it's the time of man.
 I don't know who I am,
But you know life is for learning.

 We are stardust.
 We are golden.
And we've got to get ourselves back to the garden.

By the time we got to Woodstock,
We were half a million strong
And Everywhere there was song and celebration.

And I dreamed I saw the bombers
 Riding shotgun in the sky,
And they were turning into butterflies
 Above our nation.

 We are stardust.
 Billion year old carbon.
 We are golden..
 Caught in the devil's bargain
And we've got to get ourselves back to the garden.

Emsquare, Sorry but "Hallelujah" is one song where the lyrics completely baffle me. Although there are several performances of it that I enjoy I always cringe at "hair" rhymed with chair and the lyrics just don't hang together for me.  Not Cohen's best effort by a long shot. The emotion of the song might be one thing but the lyrics are overrated IMO.

I've been thinking about this ( which in itself may surprise some folks around here... :green: ). I think that the tendency among the many, many vocalists who have felt compelled to take a run at this song is to try to interpret it as a soaring spiritual paean. It's not. Mr. Cohen was aiming lower than that. Song's about nooky. With that thought in mind, I think the lyrics hang together a lot better and are actually typically Cohen-clever...I wouldn't know where to begin to try to find a "best effort " among Cohen's lyrics - he wields a mighty pen.

Too many singers turn this song into a fist-clenching, chest-beating tribute to their own vocal chops and end up steering it into the weeds...One of the better interpretations I've heard of Hallelujah is actually by Bono ( insert remark about " what they say in the Old South " here...). Renee Fleming (  :o ) does a good job on it, too. And she of all people could take that song by the hair and swing it around her head if she chose but she does an appropriately- restrained take on it.  If you haven't heard her version, see what you think :

Renee Fleming's voice backed up by a cheesy, tacky, low-budget electronic orchestra???  That's just wrong! :nono: :duh:

The only answer for Stairway To Heaven is to continue the revolution The MC5 started when they kicked out the jams!!!

Hey ho, let's go! Hey ho, let's go!
Hey ho, let's go! Hey ho, let's go!

They're forming in straight line
They're going through a tight wind

And for something newer, "Dirty Paws (My Head is an Animal)":

Jumping up and down the floor,
My head is an animal
And once there was an animal,
It had a son that mowed the lawn
The son was an OK guy,
They had a pet dragonfly
The dragonfly it ran away,
But it came back with a story to say

I am just a poor boy
Though my story seldom told
I squandered my resistance
For a pocket full of mumbles such are promises

All lies and jests
Still a man hears
What he wants to hear
And disregards the rest ...

I'm a little late to the party but here's a few opening lyrics.  I think we're suppose to post opening lyrics, correct?

Well I got a bad liver and broken heart, yeah,
I drunk me a river since you tore me apart
And I don't have a drinking problem, 'cept when I can't get a drink
And I wish you'd a-known her, we were quite a pair,
She was sharp as a razor and soft as a prayer

Tom Waits.  Kinda says it all for itself, but that last line has always been with me.

Well my time went so quickly, I went lickety-splickly out to my old '55
As I drove away slowly, feeling so holy, God knows, I was feeling alive.

Another Tom Waits song, the way I felt after my first experience with a girl.

I never saw the morning 'til I stayed up all night
I never saw the sunshine 'til you turned out the light
I never saw my hometown until I stayed away too long
I never heard the melody, until I needed a song.

See a pattern?  Okay, last Waits lyrics, but he's one of our greatest musical poets.  Here's another poet:

The ragamuffin gunner is returnin' home like a hungry runaway
He walks through town all alone--"He must be from the fort," he hears the high school girls say
His countryside's burnin' with wolfman fairies dressed in drag for homicide
The hit-and-run plead sanctuary, 'neath a holy stone they hide
They're breakin' beams and crosses with a spastic's reelin' perfection
Nuns run bald through Vatican halls, pregnant, pleadin' immaculate conception
And everybody's wrecked on Main Street from drinking unholy blood
Sticker smiles sweet as Gunner breathes deep, his ankles caked in mud

One of my fav Springsteen songs, I love his early stuff before he lost his way.

Madman drummers bummers and Indians in the summer with a teenage diplomat
In the dumps with the mumps as the adolescent pumps his way into his hat
With a boulder on my shoulder, feelin' kinda older I tripped the merry-go-round
With this very unpleasing sneezing and wheezing the calliope crashed to the ground

Another great song from Bruce, again off the first album, what happened to him later?

Oh Carol, don't let him steal your heart away
I'm gonna learn to dance if it takes me all night and day

The original, Chuck Berry.

:D   There's a king on a throne with his eyes torn out
There's a blind man looking for a shadow of doubt
Ther's a rich man sleeping on a golden bed
There's a skeleton choking on a crust of bread
King of pain        :D
                                     kinda cool ....

If I had a perfect day
I would have it start this way
Open up the fridge and have a tall boy -- yeah!

"One Fine Day" by The Offspring

Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away
Now it looks as though they're here to stay
Oh, I believe in yesterday

Suddenly I'm not half the man I used to be
There's a shadow hanging over me
Oh, yesterday came suddenly

Why she had to go
I don't know, she wouldn't say
I said something wrong
Now I long for yesterday

Yesterday love was such an easy game to play
Now I need a place to hide away
Oh, I believe in yesterday

Why’d she have to go?
I don't know, she wouldn't say
I said something wrong
Now I long for yesterday

Yesterday love was such an easy game to play
Now I need a place to hide away
Oh, I believe in yesterday
