I remember the first time I heard this on the radio  :o

Holly came from Miami, F.L.A.
Hitch-hiked her way across the U.S.A.
Plucked her eyebrows on the way
Shaved her legs and then he was a she
She says, "Hey babe, take a walk on the wild side"

not that one. Some people think this is a very worthy Lightfoot cover. Very unique longform cover.

THiS ONE. Took me a minute to find it.

You used to say live and let live

Emsquare,

Thank you for the education. Next time I hear "Hallelujah" I will listen differently.  :thumb:

Fair enough. Lyrics strike people in different ways. If you are not familiar with the story of David & Bathsheba then that is what it alludes to at first. Then the personal. The opening stanza I felt was brilliant. It is music composition in reference to the minor fall (sadness/melancholy) the major lift (joy) which follows the modal change I think I hear. Interesting. To me anyway.

I recently found out that he and Rebecca De Mornay married. This impresses me a little.

First line and you know this is not bubblegum music.  :o

I'm going to toss this one into the ring as one of the best opening lines ever:

Well, I saw her today at the reception
A glass of wine in her hand
I knew she would go meet her connection
At her feet was her footloose man

    Pure melancholy and despair

    Hear the lonesome whiperwill
He sounds too blue to fly
The midnight train is whining low
Im so lonesome I could cry

Ive never seen a night so long
When time goes crawling by
The moon just went behind a cloud
To hide it's face and cry

Did you ever see a robin weep
When leaves begin to die
That means he's lost the will to live
Im so lonesome I could cry

The silence of a falling star
Lights up a purple sky
And as I wonder where you are
Im so lonesome I could cry

Pink Floyd, "Dogs".

You gotta be crazy, you gotta have a real need.
You gotta sleep on your toes, and when you're on the street,
You gotta be able to pick out the easy meat with your eyes closed.
And then moving in silently, down wind and out of sight,
You gotta strike when the moment is right without thinking.

And after a while, you can work on points for style.
Like the club tie, and the firm handshake,
A certain look in the eye and an easy smile.
You have to be trusted by the people that you lie to,
So that when they turn their backs on you,
You'll get the chance to put the knife in.

You gotta keep one eye looking over your shoulder.
You know it's going to get harder, and harder, and harder as you
get older.
And in the end you'll pack up and fly down south,
Hide your head in the sand,
Just another sad old man,
All alone and dying of cancer.

This, along with the guitar harmonies and solo that follows, are among the most powerful moments they ever committed to record.

 Sane, sane, they're all insane
Fireman's blind, the conductor is lame
A Cincinnati jacket and a sad luck dame
Hangin' out the window with a bottle full of rain
  Clap hands, Clap Hands, ...

Tom Waits - Clap Hands

Extra Credit

On the Big Time version of Clap Hands, Tom's alternate opening.
As best as I can make out anyway.

Wine, Wine, The goose drank wine
The monkey chew tobacco on the street car line
Line broke. Monkey got choked
And they all went to heaven in a little row boat.
Clap Hands

For a guy who has often shown a complete lack of concern for lyrics ( to the point of using the Burroughs "cut-up" technique to generate them ), David Bowie has come up with his fair share of high-grade opening lines...such as:

"Ground Control to Major Tom - take your protein pills and put your helmet on..."

" Day after day they send my friends away to mansions cold and grey,
To the far side of town where the thin men stalk the streets while the sane stay underground..."

" Still don't know what I was waiting for...My time was running wild, a million dead-end streets
And every time I thought I had it made, it seems the taste was not so sweet..."

" It's a God-awful small affair for the girl with the mousey hair
But her Mummy is yelling 'No" and her Daddy has told her to go..."

" Time takes a cigarette, puts it in your mouth..."

" As they pulled you out of the oxygen tent, you asked for the latest party..."

" They pulled in just behind the bridge. He lays her down...he frowns:
'Gee my life's a funny thing. Am I still too young?' "

" The return of the Thin White Duke,
Throwing darts in lovers' eyes..."

" There's a brand new dance ( but I don't know it's name )
That people from bad homes do again and again..."

Hot town, summer in the city
Back of my neck getting dirty and gritty
Been down, isn't it a pity
Doesn't seem to be a shadow in the city

All around, people looking half dead
Walking on the sidewalk, hotter than a match head

Dangerous Fun

Her body is as liquid and as perfect as a wave
As tender and as vicious as a bird that I once saved
But if I touch her she won't feel it
And what I tell her she won't hear
And if she loves me she'll conceal it
And she'll cry if I come near

It takes patience to walk
And spirit to run
But nothing to pity yourself
But it's dangerous fun

Rich harvest of the grape and grain
I taste my lovers mouth
She smells of the evening rain
And the breezes from the south
But if I face her she won't know me
And if I weaken she won't wait
And she knows magic that she won't show me
And if love comes it will come too late

It takes patience to walk on
And spirit to run
But nothing to pity yourself
But it's dangerous fun

One of my favorites...
From; The day the old man died

"I crawled across Texas in hell bound eldorado. Just east of El Paso runin low on gasoline.
Pulled into a station, not far from my destination. Checked the oil checked the tires wiped the windshield clean
."

When the night shows
The signals grow on radios
All the strange things
They come and go, as early warnings
Stranded starfish have no place to hide
Still waiting for the swollen Easter tide
There's no point in direction, we cannot
Even choose a side.

I took the old track
The hollow shoulder, across the waters
On the tall cliffs
They were getting older, sons and daughters
The jaded underworld was riding high
Waves of steel hurled metal at the sky
And as the nail sunk in the cloud, the rain
Was warm and soaked the crowd.

When the flood calls
You have no home, you have no walls
In the thunder crash
You're a thousand minds, within a flash
Don't be afraid to cry at what you see
The actors gone, there's only you and me
And if we break before the dawn, they'll
Use up what we used to be.

Lord, here comes the flood
We'll say goodbye to flesh and blood
If again the seas are silent
In any still alive
It'll be those who gave their island to survive
Drink up, dreamers, you're running dry.

Cat's in the bag, the neighbors holler
This party's higher than the Eiffel Tower

We're all here to be reckless!
We're all sleazy and easy to please
Dreamers and schemers on the loose!

We're all here for a celebration / the madcap scene and the max machine
And the friends you see go up in smoke
And this heel toe dance song tour de force
