I have to wonder what happened to the original title, about making an "entrance."

Seems to me the "entrance" should be just a line or two that grabs you and makes a point that pulls you in to the rest of the story.  It's been great to read the lyrics, especially the poetry of the song about winter, but "....just seventeen....", "Puff, the Magic Dragon, Lived by the Sea," etc., have the "hook."

Maybe I'm just focusing or opening chords or phrases that are burned into my somewhat shaky memory, but making and entrance should leave one wanting more.  Kinda like a smile from a pretty woman, IYKWIM.

Just my five cents, adjusted for inflation.   :thumb:

Mama told me when I was young
Come sit beside me, my only son
And listen closely to what I say
And if you do this it'll help you some sunny day

Oh, take your time don't live too fast
Troubles will come and they will pass
Go find a woman you'll find love
And don't forget son there is someone up above

And be a simple kind of man
Be something you love and understand
Baby be a simple kind of man
Oh, won't you do this for me son if you can?

Forget your lust for the rich man's gold
All that you need is in your soul
And you can do this, oh baby, if you try
All that I want for you my son is to be satisfied
And be a simple kind of man
Be something you love and understand
Baby be a simple kind of man
Oh, won't you do this for me son if you can?
Oh yes, I will

Boy, don't you worry you'll find yourself
Follow your heart and nothing else
And you can do this, oh baby, if you try
All that I want for you my son is to be satisfied
And be a simple kind of man
Be something you love and understand
Baby be a simple kind of man
Oh, won't you do this for me son if you can?

Baby be a simple, be a simple man
Be something you love and understand
Baby be a simple kind of man

Another song (lyrics) I like...

Went down to tin pan alley....see what was going on
Things was too hot down there....couldn't stay very long
Hey hey hey hey....alley's the roughest place I've ever been
All the people down there....livin' for their whisky, wine, and gin

I heard a woman scream....yeah and I peeked through the door
Some cat was workin' on annie with a....lord with a two-by-four
Hey hey hey hey....alley's the roughest place I've ever been
All the people down there....livin' for their whisky, wine, and gin
I heard a pistol shoot....yeah and it was a .44
Somebody killed a crap shooter cause he didn't....shake, rattle, and roll
Hey hey hey hey....alley's the roughest place I've ever been
All the people down there....killin' for their whisky, wine, and gin

I saw a cop standin'....with his hand on his gun
Said "this is a raid boys....nobody run"
Hey, hey, hey....alley's the roughest place I've ever been
Yeah they took me away from tin pan alley
And took me right back...to the pen

SRV- Tin Pan Aley

"All you need is love. All you need is love. All you need is love, love. Love is all you need.."

Shorter, maybe better too.

"Old Man" by Neil Young

Old man look at my life,
I'm a lot like you were.
Old man look at my life,
I'm a lot like you were.

Old man look at my life,
 Twenty four
 and there's so much more
 Live alone in a paradise
That makes me think of two.

Love lost, such a cost,
 Give me things
 that don't get lost.
Like a coin that won't get tossed
 Rolling home to you.

Old man take a look at my life
 I'm a lot like you
I need someone to love me
 the whole day through
Ah, one look in my eyes
and you can tell that's true.

Lullabies, look in your eyes,
Run around the same old town.
Doesn't mean that much to me
To mean that much to you.

I've been first and last
Look at how the time goes past.
But I'm all alone at last.
 Rolling home to you.

Old man take a look at my life
 I'm a lot like you
I need someone to love me
 the whole day through
Ah, one look in my eyes
and you can tell that's true.

Old man look at my life,
I'm a lot like you were.
Old man look at my life,
I'm a lot like you were.

Throughout the history of music there has always been the troubadours, madrigals, minstrels, town criers and even some poets.  Music really is a slice of life and will always be as there will always be stories to be sung.

I can only think of a few songs where the opening chords and lyrics are as distinct as "California Dreaming". Anyone remember the game show "Name That Tune"?  How many split seconds would it take to recognize "California Dreaming"?  You would not even need to hear the lyrics "All the leaves were brown and the sky was grey"  Another winter song.  :thumb:

That's not your bottle
Nor what's inside
I guess they brought it just for them
Howd you get in
That's **cking right
None of my friends would bother
To even bother

Benjamins mariguana
Micheal brought a keg
The skaters are high on mushrooms
Passing out hits of lsd
Philip wants to be a rock star
But he's a bit uptight
So he brings his favourite bettys
With a bottle full of whisky
And sits on the couch all night
All night

I was thinking the same thing.
Now, back to great opening lines (not entire lyrics)

Hello Darkness my old friend,
I've come to talk with you again...

Indeed it does, but the opening lyric grabs you before you even know it's going to be a great song.  That called "Making and Entrance"....

..and another by Gordon Lightfoot-

The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they called 'Gitche Gumee'
The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead
When the skies of November turn gloomy
