A long, long time ago
I can still remember how that music used to make me smile
And I knew if I had my chance
That I could make those people dance
And maybe they'd be happy for a while

I am the one, Orgasmatron, the outstretched grasping hand
My name is of agony, my servants rape the land
Obsequious and arrogant, clandestine and vain
Two thousand years of misery, of torture in my name
Hypocrisy made paramount, paranoia the low
My name is called religion, sadistic, sacred whore.

I twist the truth, I rule the world, my crown called deceit
I am the emperor of lies, you grovel at my feet
I rob you and I slaughter you, your downfall is my gain
And still you play the sycophant and rebel in your pain
And all my promises are lies, all my love is hate
I am the politician, and I decide your fate.

I march before a martyred world, an army for the fight
I speak of great heroic days, of victory and might
I hold a banner drenched in blood, I urge you to be brave
I lead you to your destiny, I lead you to your grave
Your bones will build my palaces, your eyes will stud my crown
For I am Mars, the god of war, and I will cut you down.

PRELUDE :  You had me at "Orgasmatron"...
Lemmy's an under-rated lyricist, probably because, for every lyric like this one, there's a Love Me Like A Reptile. Not that there's anything wrong with that. It's a valid lifestyle choice and should be respected.

Neat topic, great idea for a thread!
This is a topic I think about periodically (as I'm sure we all do).
Every once in a while a lyric catches my ear and gives me cause to ponder. Of course, right now I'm stumped ...........

But Yea. Lyle Lovett has some lyrics that are sooooo off the wall, I'm not sure if they're genius or lunatic.
Now that I mention that, I heard this on the way home tonight:

"Look, I understand too little too late
I realize there are things you say and do
You can never take back
But what would you be if you didn't even try
You have to try
So after a lot of thought
I'd like to reconsider
Please
If it's not too late
Make it a cheeseburger"

Want some whiskey in your water

Sugar in your tea

What's all these crazy questions they askin' me

This is the craziest party there could ever be

Don't turn on the lights, 'cause I don't want to see

Mama told me not to come

Mama told me not to come

That ain't the way to have fun, no

Written by Randy Newman, a guy who has a way with words himself. Dixie Flyer is one of my favourites of his - the way he writes about that Jewish family in the South, drinking whiskey in the back seat of that big green Hudson:

"Tryin' to do like the Gentiles do.
Christ, they wanted to be Gentiles, too.
Who wouldn't down there ? Wouldn't you?
An American Christian...Goddamn !"

Nice piece of work, that.

Man, DD, I grew up with Land of Dreams, it was an album that my Dad and I share(d) especially (I mean, our family were Northern Jews, but we could still relate :).

Marie ('70s Randy) is one of my all time favorite songs. My Uncle Jeff hooked me up with that when I was 14 and went to visit him in Chicago, he spun the record and told me that it was him and my Aunt's song.

Randy Newman's music is probably one of the things that provoke the most emotional recall in me, though I've rarely thought about it.

So cool.

Another fine songwriter.....

I spend the night in a chair thinking she'll be there
But she never comes
And I wake up and wipe the sleep from my eyes
And I rise to face another day
Without her

It's just no good anymore when you walk through the door
To an empty room
You go inside and set a table for one, it's no fun
When you have to spend a day
Without her, do do do...
Without her, do do do...

Oh yeah, the very fine guitar player Scott Henderson has a song calked 'I Hate You' done in an early 60's doo-wop style (with shredding guitar throughout, of course), it's a duet between Thelma Houston and a f*in KILLER singer named Masta Edwards, and they sing to each other, each taking a line or two, and it's all in rhyme.. Starts out pretty tame lyrically, they end up insulting each other hardcore by the end, pretty hilarious.

http://youtu.be/5gqguISPRN0

It starts out, him:

Oh you are an angel,
An angel sent from hell,
Your mouth like a sailor,
Your cheeks, cosmetics melt.

By the end, it's her...

Oh, it's toooo baaaad your Mama
wasn't on the pill (you better leave my mother out of this!)
It's too bad, baby

Both, in kick-ass two part harmony:

Oh, you ruined my life
so I hate you, and I always will..'

I absolutely love the lyrics of this song- and know the setting intimately.  It's the time where you tell your kids who's who in the family... people they've  heard of but don't know. Lyle has an album full of these in Joshua Judges Ruth- one visual image after another, taken from experience.

I went to a funeral
 Lord it made me happy
 Seeing all those people
 I ain't seen
 Since the last time
 Somebody died

 Everybody talking
 They were telling funny stories
 Saying all those things
 They ain't said
 Since the last time
 Somebody died

Or a lyric of love and betrayel...

And I like cream in my coffee
And I like to sleep late on sunday
And nobody knows me like my baby
And I like eggs over easy
 With flour tortillas
And nobody knows me like my baby

 And nobody holds me
 And nobody knows me
Nobody knows me like my baby

But it was a dream made to order
 South of the border
And nobody knows me like my baby
And she cried man how could you do it
And I swore that there weren't nothing to it
But nobody knows me like my baby

Love has found a Way, by Spirit from Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus  (1970)

Waves are crashing on the sea
Lennons flashing on how would she be
Some are reaching for the gun
Some are searching for all the sun
 Love has found another way
I knew it would make it some how (Oh Yeah)
We will find a better way for making love
And love and love has found a way
 And love....

 Children reaching for a hand
 Soldiers killing at every command
Though I've seen this with silent tears
Some will give this with violent fears
 Love has found another way
I knew it would make it some how (Oh Yeah)
We will find a better way for making love
And love, love has found a way
And love, love, love has found a way

From the same album, Soldier:

Just by the wave of my hand
 I'd let you understand
I am not a lonely soldier
Just be the wave of my hand
 I'd let you understand
I am not here for the love
No, no, no, no she knows me
No, no, no, no I love her

You have the world at your fingertips
No one can make it better than you

A poet...

Everybody knows that the dice are loaded

Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed

Everybody knows that the war is over

Everybody knows the good guys lost

Everybody knows the fight was fixed

The poor stay poor, the rich get rich

That's how it goes....

Everybody knows

Everybody knows that the boat is leaking

Everybody knows that the captain lied

Everybody got this broken feeling

Like their father or their dog just died

Everybody talking to their pockets

Everybody wants a box of chocolates

And a long stem rose

Everybody knows......

Someone's mad.....

You wanna make me sick;

You wanna lick my wounds,

Don't you, baby?

You want the badge of honor when you save my hide

But you're the one in the way

Of the day of doom, baby

If you need my shame to reclaim your pride

And when I think of it, my fingers turn to fists

I never did anything to you, man

But no matter what I try

You'll beat me with your bitter lies

So call me crazy, hold me down

Make me cry; got off now, baby-

It wont be long till you'll be

Lying limp in your own hands....

"LIMP" - Fiona Apple  (Happens to be a good sounding reference track...)

Cohen, huh ? The big guns are being brought to bear now... :thumb:

I'm listening to another of Canada's gifts to melancholia right now : Matthew Good. I've always connected with his music ( God help me... :green: ) and the title track to the album I'm listening to right now ( Avalanche ) has kind of hit home with me as I deal with a change of ownership in the company I've worked at for 27 years and how it's affecting all the people around me as we deal with the transition and all the different flavours of upheaval it brings with it :

One foot in front of the other
One foot back to counter it
Days like these you've got to find it in some other way...
It's all or nothing, baby.

Avalanche, start inside of me
Avalanche, down through the trees
Avalanche, start inside of me
Avalanche, hell down through the trees...

If everyone's a casualty
Then take your time, there ain't no trouble.
If the weather's fine and we're feeling crazy
There's always drinks and dancing in the rubble.
I'm spinning and you're spinning
The world's spinning and we're laughing
And I'm charming, the Devil's charming
And we're ruined but we're still building
And I'm selling and you're counting
The world's stopping but we keep going
And we're ruthless and we're cunning
And I'm heir to it all.

Days like these you've got to find it in some other way...
It's all or nothing baby.

Wow. That hit me where I live...Funny how a great lyric can do that.

A late nite thought.....

Death Walks Behind You,

Death Walks Behind You,

Death Walks Behind You,

Death Walks Behind You.

Lock The Door, Switch The Light.

You'll Be So Afraid Tonight.

Hide Away From The Bad,

Count The Nine Lives That You Had.

Start To Scream, Shout For Help,

There Is No One By Your Side.

To Forget What Is Done,

Seems So Hard To Carry On.

Luck Is False, That It's Near,

Bring Yourself To Understand,

It's Your Fate, Or What's Cast,

Point a Finger At Yourself.

(Death Walks Behind You,)
(Death Walks Behind You.)

"It was a slow day
And the sun was beating
On the soldiers by the side of the road
There was a bright light
A shattering of shop windows
The bomb in the baby carriage
Was wired to the radio"
