Did you have a hard time finding 6H30 tube? I was wondering if you use NOS tubes or just Sovtek or Eelectro-harmonix? Did you think of trying 6H6P?
Thanks!

With the Dodd preamp the Sovtek is clean and dynamic however a tad hi fi sounding compared to EH. The EH exhibits a tad more refinement than the Sovtek. The Reflector 6H30DR is in every way a more natural sounding tube. More presence and clarity. Vocal sibilants are not hyped or crisp. If anything the bass may not equal the Sovtek but beats in in every other category.
We are now dealers for Dodd. For peamps I would try a Bryston first and then judge all other contenders. Some perfer a tubed pre others do not. You are building a system not selecting an individual component. The synergy is key not the type. Have fun trying.

Another vote for the Dodd.  Top end quality, very good price.

I started with the EH gold ends tube.  Very fast and detailed.  The DR sounds more lush and has more weight yet has maintained the detail.  I found it at Upscale Audio.

I like the Dodd Audio Battery PreAmp Generation 2.  Three inputs, HT pass through and a remote control.  I just updated the tube to the elusive and holy grail of Russian Supertubes the 6H30DR.  It is more on the detailed but not edged side of things rather than the "Tubey" colored sound.  The tube upgrade added alot of weight.  I mean to say sonic density.  Call Gary and speak to him.   Read the reveiws on the original battery pre.

It is in front of a 380 watt class D amp.  I like tubes in front of solid state.  It might be for you as well.  That Shindo is very nice as well.  The Dodd runs $1500.

What speakers are you using?

Thanks.  Imma idiot.  You had posted the speakers in the opening discussion.  I looked these up and read a very good reveiw about them.  The conclusion was: Good lookin speaker and they sound really good too with killer bass.   Me and a few of my propeller head friends will be going to the THE Show in Newport Beach, CA.  Hopefully I can hear them there.  I'm makin a list.  I've always wanted to try a 4BSST2 in my system.  Please tell us how the MAC does with your sytem.   I'm surprised you went all tubey on us!   The "thread to nowhere" went really fast to the selection of a new preamp.  My hat is off to you.  I would have fretted and hemmed and hawed for weeks.

As someone once told me, It didn't happen unless you reveiw it and post those findings here.

Best of listening to ya!

OK, so what made you decide to cross over to the dark side and buy a tube pre-amp ( my current and previous pre's are/were tubed BTW and I think they are wonderfully complimentary to my Brystons ) ? Dish !   :D

 Can't argue with that!   8)
Tubed pre's are a lot less maintenance-intense than tube amps. The McIntosh / Bryston combo sounds like an interesting proposition. I'd love to hear your impressions after the dust settles.
Have fun!

I'm using a Bat 32se with 7SST/2. Very happy with the unit. You can probably get a used one $3500.

turnovertherecord....I use to own the C220 and it was a great Pre....if you didn't know already, the 220 has 4 tubes... you could turn OFF the Phono tubes(which I did since I'm not into vinyl) and just run the linestage tubes.

May I ask how are you going to turn ON and OFF the two units together? Do you need to physically get up and flick the switch of the 4BSSt2?

One has to merely train thier favorite pet for that task.  I would have the "earn your keep or get out" speech right away with the dog.

You can always use the 12v triggers..    I do on my C2300+4BSST2.

Great news, how to wire the C220 to 4BSST2

The McIntosh C220 has a Power Control - MAIN trigger jack (the ACC jack would also work) that accepts a 1/8" stereo mini phone plug.  The McIntosh branded cable has a stereo plug, but I think it may only have 2 conductors.  Either way, using the McIntosh cable or a generic 1/8" stereo phone plug cable will require cutting the plug off of one end to use with the Bryston trigger connection which uses a terminal block plug.

If you use a generic stereo 1/8" phone plug cable it would be a 3-conductor cable (2 insulated conductors + ground shield conductor).  You would use the ground shield conductor and the insulated conductor that is attached to the tip of the plug (the center position on the plug is not used).

Connect those two wires to the 2 IN terminals on the Bryston connector plug and set the External Turn-on trigger switch to EXTERNAL.
