Do you own a decent set of headphones?

BHA-1 could be a nice 2-in-1 deal for you,

Cheers,

I like the Dodd Audio Battery PreAmp Generation 2.  Three inputs, HT pass through and a remote control.  I just updated the tube to the elusive and holy grail of Russian Supertubes the 6H30DR.  It is more on the detailed but not edged side of things rather than the "Tubey" colored sound.  The tube upgrade added alot of weight.  I mean to say sonic density.  Call Gary and speak to him.   Read the reveiws on the original battery pre.

It is in front of a 380 watt class D amp.  I like tubes in front of solid state.  It might be for you as well.  That Shindo is very nice as well.  The Dodd runs $1500.

What speakers are you using?

I use three preamps with my 4B-SST² amp.
Bryston BP-26
Audio Research Sp-15
VAC Standard
All three are two chassis preamps.
I bought the Bryston new.
The ARC SP-15 was $1,500 three years ago on the gon.
The VAC Standard I paid $1,400 from the gon.

I originally wanted an Audio Research REF3 used for my setup. but i bought the Bryston BP-26.
No regrets.
I use the ARC for the phono stage in it as a second one after my Bryston BP1.5
And the VAC I use as a fancy tube buffer for the digital stuff.

The Sp-15 and VAc are just below the Bryston in quality. And a lot cheaper, used.
If you want some other flavor preamp, i would find a used Audio Research REF3 or LS27

Sadly the Audio Research LS-27 that was on a-gon this morning is sold.  I would look at an LS-27 a mini REFERENCE 4.

I am using an LS-27 with 7BSST2s and I am very pleased with the combination.

A Gill Audio Alana would be great, and a First Sound would be even better...

If you were happy with your BP-26p and want to stay with solid state, why do not get the same one again unless you are tired of it.
Or if you want to go with tube, I have been using my Sonic Frontiers line 2  for over 10 years and I will keep it for sure.
How much would you like to spend for a pre amp?

PRELUDE has a good point ( as he so often does !  :thumb: ): If you long for the lost BP-26, perhaps another one is the ticket. If not, why not ponder what you didn't like about it or would change about it if you could. Then go from there. You flogged it for a reason, no ? What is your quest, good Sir Knight?

Did you have a hard time finding 6H30 tube? I was wondering if you use NOS tubes or just Sovteck or Eelectro-harmonix? Did you think of trying 6H6P?
Thanks!

Owning a 4b...I would recommend a tube front end.
Check out one of these...   Dodd..excellent !! ,, spent a lot of time listening to this battery preamp.

Mystere ca21, have been waiting for one of these ,,, on backorder. have high hopes for this one.

Audible Illusions..own one...good match with my 4b...they have a new model out with remote,
                                       word is good on it.
                                                                                                                                                                                    Greg

The BP-26P,I had was great,I had a listen to a pass lab int 150,so I purchased it,great detail, but no phono,so purchase a clearaudio basic plus to go with the pass lab, great sound but not enough power for my speakers,so I sold it

so now I have a 4bsst2,TT and phono stage,speakers,

do not want tube preamp because of tubes,,do not need gain now because the 4b will have enough power,,,the pass lab had no gain my fault for not understanding what gain is,now I Know

because I only use vinyl,,I was going to get a pass B1 volume control and go direct to the 4b

how would this work???

I Cannot imagine that how many pre amps are out there with phono stage or separate but again Bryston makes phono stage also.
Still you did not say how much would you like to spend and it would help everyone to guide you in the better way.

so you don't want tubes, have had good success (synergy) with a former BP-26, have $3K to spend....

Sounds like a used BP-26 is in the cards for you. One sitting at a dealer in the GTA for $2800 (see Canuckaudiomart) - sounds like the answer to me...
