You've exceeded budget! Now 40 of them...

Sorry AJ, I was talking about my system.  For the OP, I would recommend 10/$100 subs or 100/$10 subs.  Also, I put a bass-shaker in each pocket (just the front two) and find that it really helps my perception of the low end, although I can only listen to bass-heavy music for ten or twenty seconds, max, without causing perminant damage.   :thumb:

Jackman, could I get a link to your $10 sub? Also would consider the $25 ones, although I'm not sure if you really get 2.5x the sub for your money...

Okay, I've been busted!  There is no $10 or $25 sub but I was telling the truth about the bass-shakers in your pockets.  Please note, I am not responsible for any injuries that are very likely to result.  The price we pay for good bass.   :green:

I am still not buying it.  A $250 sub still will have muddy, boomy bass with more distortion than a $500-$1000 sub, I don't care how well you equalize them.  They would be fine for HT but not high end 2ch audio, especially with planar or electrostat speakers.  I would rather have 2 $500 subs.

I have a Velodyne CHT-8 sub (sold for $350 years ago) which was a nice sub for HT, but it sounded lousy with my Magnepan MMG's and I crossed it over at 50hz so I wasn't asking it to do too much.  I have a Martin Logan sub that integrates well with my Magnepan 1.6's and gives musical, tight and fast bass.

I have had quite a few good subwoofers and the Dynaudio sub 250 is the most musical/tuneful i've ever had.

Well, I don't think anyone was trying to persuade you to buy anything. I was just curious about your 4x$250 vs $1000 sub comparison setup, room specifics, etc, etc.
No biggie.

A $250 sub still will have muddy, boomy bass with more distortion than a $500-$1000 sub
Not a, four. Four $250 subs. Spatially distributed, eq'd, phase adjusted, etc.
And no they won't have more distortion, they will have less, unless incompetence rules.
Always a danger with these things.

cheers,

AJ

Basically you are distributing the bass load from one to four drivers, which means that each of the four drivers will have to do less work. Cheap subs have issues when they are overdriven/driven hard, if you reduce their load there is less of a chance of overdriving the sub.

Just got off the phone with Chad from Epik. He isn't going anywhere and seems to have some new stuff in the works. No more Legends after this though.

I would like to see his new designs use heavy duty cast aluminum frame drivers.

He used the words "high end" when describing the new stuff.

I love the "cheap" drivers in the Legend though. Phenomenal sound. His musician's ear is to be trusted.

Was Chad from Epik able to fix your sub?

Note:  There are no absolutes and it is rather hard to argue subjective opinions, which much of our hobby is.   For many/some, less expensive multiple subs is the way to go, for others a single well placed sub is the right path.  I tend to like the 2 or more approach.  The benefits have been spelled out, except for the fact that not having to drive multiple subs as hard also is less taxing on them physically and one can argue, makes them more reliable, but that too is user subjective.

No problem with the slight curve in the road, as this was about the best under 1K sub thread and it became the best 1K sub system thread which might impart more diverse information anyway.

Although, I did say subjective, there is empirical evidence that multiple subs result in less room funkiness....

Opening the windows and a can of Frebreeze can result in less room funkiness, too.

He's shipping me another amp. But since there won't be any more new ones I gotta look at what I can do next since I want to add more subs in the future.

No problem with mixing and matching subs, or finding another Epik on the used market. Understand, bass is pure energy and with two different subs, just need to match the output and x/o settings.

I'd like to share a recent experience. I replaced one of those small Sunfire subs with the TBI Magellan VI su subwoofer and a TBI 200 su power amp in my 2.1 desktop system. What an amazing difference!

I went from muddy, single note bass to punchy, deep, well defined musical bass. I set the crossover a bit high, around 100 to 120 Hz, just to try getting some more mid bass, although my monitors are rated -3dB at 50Hz.

I know there is a separate thread on TBI, but I wanted to recommend this sub, around the $1K price point, especially if music is a priority and not HT.

I also like the idea of having an external sub amp, as the Sunfire would shake/vibrate so much, it can't be good for that plate amp.

Just my 2 cents....

With all the talk about vibration, maybe the idea of taking the amp plate off of the sub enclosure and build a separate box for it and put a dummy metal plate back on the sub enclosure.
