Four of the best subs @ $250ea surely outperforms any $1k sub.
Ding, ding, ding....we have a winner.
Heck, even three can do. One "main" and two of the small, wireless, hideaway variety, to mitigate OMG 3 subs in my SAF's room?? :o
But unfortunately, audio misinformation is difficult to "unlearn"....

I have to agree as well, I have two small B&W Subs that sound better than any one big sub I've borrowed or owned.

He's pretty swamped I think. He's very responsive on Facebook, that seems to he the best way right now. I made a post about not being able to get him on the phone and he answered me that day.

He's swamped?  Doing what, making t-shirts? It looks like the guys at Epik have LOTS of free time on their hands because they certainly aren't making subs.  I emailed them months ago and never received a response.  They are local guys (I drove through their town last night) and they offered products at good prices.

They've been out of stock since November or December.  We are midway through April and they are still out of stock.  How much longer should potential customers have to wait before declaring these guys DOA?  One year, two years?  It's sad because ineas pulling for them but it does not look good at this time.

Sounds like their Chinese supplier/vendor pulled out on them....

They made their first series of cabinets in house.  Not sure about the most recent series but it doesn't seem to matter anymore because they haven't shipped anything in a long time and there is no update in their website.  Unless you consider OUT OF STOCK as an update.  I hope I'm wrong because they seemed to offer a good value but it doesn't look good at the moment.

I quite liked the REL Storm III that I had. With its speaker level inputs, it integrated fabulously. Very musical.

Not sure at what prices this becomes an option, but some subs seem to also be using DSP to achieve better performance. If I was in the market for a sub, I would look into this as a possibility (or pair a sub with something like the offerings from DSPeaker).

So what do you consider small subs? 8" or 10"? Are big subs 12" and larger? Just trying to figure out where the dividing line is between a small and a large sub.

If that's the case I might see if I can't roll my own. It can't be that hard. Love the type.

To me, 8" is a small sub, 10" a medium and 12" and above large. I am by no means the final word on the subject.

The new low cost series from SVS looks like a great deal.  I'm not sure you could DIY a better sub for less money.  That sub appears to use a 12" Peerless XXLS driver, a very high quality woofer, and the stock amp looks very good.

I have two XS-15's from Power Sound Audio. They can be had for under a grand each, i think like $750 each. Tom the owner use to work for SVS.

Best subs i've ever owned period.

Other than the size of the sub boxes, they don't have cons.

I would much rather have 1 good sub than 4 cheap subs that cost $250 each.  I have yet to hear a $250 sub that has nice tight musical bass for 2 channel music unless you go used.  All you are going to get is mediocre muddy bass.  And they certainly would not match my Magnepan 1.6's!  I am not disagreeing that multiple subs sound better.  I am disagreeing that multiple $250 subs will sound better!

I'll put in a vote for REL (as usual).
I have an SVS and it goes bump thump ba dump thump so it's more of a movie thing.
Perhaps their non-ported models are better suited to music.

It depends on the goal, amount of eq, and how many listening positions it's important to have good bass at. I've heard Dr. Geddes setup years back where he used cheap subs in multiples and the bass quality was tremendous. The bass extension didn't really go below 20hz but that's fine for music.

To me, 8" and 10" are tiny subs, 12" is a small sub, 15" is a medium sub, 18" is a large, and 21" is enormous.  :)
(I own 8, 10, 12, and 15" subs in ported, sealed, and infinite baffle alignments)

Last year I had a chance to hear 12 high output dual subwoofer systems, 2 quad subwoofer systems, 7 single subwoofer systems and my own infinite baffle system with eight 15" drivers. There were many dual systems and one quad system that I would have preferred a single higher price subwoofer rather than multiples. The sound quality of a very good sub just can't be matched by throwing more subs into the room.

I heard dual Klipsch  RW-12D subs ($300 each at newegg) and it would be tempting to buy 3 if trying to stay under $1000. I thought a pair sounded almost as good as a pair of Hsu Research VTF-15H subs and a single VTF-15H is around $900. I heard all four in the same room.

That speaks to poor equalization/setup rather than to the quality of one subwoofer over the others.

This is why I now have 100, $25 subs!  I stack them up throughout the room and plug them into power strips.  My room looks like something from the show Horders but I'm diggin the bass!

I have 2 XV15s. Very happy with them for the money, and they honestly don't look that bad sitting next to my salks.

Interesting. What was the scenario when you heard the four $250 subs vs the $1000 one in the same room? Could you give some specifics of the setup? TIA

cheers,

AJ
